Ep. 366: Percé, Quebec | RV travel camping hiking kayaking rvlife rvliving gannet colony

We're not ones to give in to superlatives, but this may well be our best Grand Adventure yet! Percé Rock is one of Quebec's most recognized landmarks, but there's a whole lot more to see and do around this charming seaside resort town besides the rock. While staying at Camping Côte Surprise right on the southern end of the village we'll hike to both the observation platform at the Percé Geopark and beautiful Emerald Falls, sample both an outstanding microbrewery and some of Quebec's famed dining, take the boat to Bonaventure Island to see North America's largest northern gannet colony, and even kayak out to Percé Rock itself! You won't want to miss this episode.

Marc, I have to say it was epic. You captured Perce spot on. You also had some fantastic weather. We took some friends around our home region a couple of summers ago, and while in Perce we took the boat tour (in July) the seas were so rough that water was coming over the bough of the boat, and the captain found it too rough to go around Ile Bonaventure....no kayaks that day :) I see you met our Gaspe blackfly. My guess is the Gaspe mosquito probably made an appearance as well (not to be mistaken for a hummingbird) Maison du Pecheur is certainly amongst the best dining anywhere, and Pit Caribou can brew with the best in my humble opinion. It appears that you had a great stay there.... and boy that north coast drive is epic. As many times as I have done it in my life and it never gets old...unlike me. Looking forward to your next adventures, and continued safe travels.

Thank you so very much Shawn! We can't tell you how much we enjoyed our week in Percé, and it probably showed. We were relatively lucky with the mosquitoes, too, and the weather was certainly calm for us throughout the week. We put the video segments together in an order that makes the most sense to us to tell a story, and not necessarily in chronological order. That kayak out to the rock actually took place on the Sunday evening that we arrived in Percé. The conditions were perfect, and who knows if they would've stayed that way, so I went down with the boat as soon as we had made camp. 😆

So many beautiful views this week, Marc. I loved the way the weather changes so quickly off the coast... it's almost like Colorado 😃. You really covered it all. I don't think I would like being among all those birds with all those various odors. I like the coast but the smell of dead fishy sea creatures washed up on shore was never my fave. At the rate that natural limestone cliff structure (Percé) is eroding and collapsing... I don't tend to think it will last but a few more hundred years. Limestone literally melts over time with acid (high pH) rain. Your right, with all those seals around, the bull seals are very territorial and could easily swamp your kayak. I really enjoyed the driving sections of the trip, along the coast, on the way to your destination. Very pleasant and beautiful. Thanks for all the work you put into this week's adventure, Marc. Ps. By the way, you must have had a nice little wobble to your gait after those four sample beers. Craft beer tends to be stronger than popular and premium store bought beer.😂 Gord

The detail and time put in to bring this to us is simply unparalleled. With all this to enjoy I have to say you were correct in reply to our comment last week that this is truly epic. Thank you as always for coming along! There's so much to see and do in the Percé area, and so much unique natural beauty that it should be on any RV traveler's short list. Everything in this episode (save for the first segment of the drive from Cap-Chat to Percé) was filmed within 15 minutes of our campsite, and we left some things on the table after a full week in town, too. Bar Harbor (ME) gets so much attention in the RV community, and while I'll be the first to admit that we've not yet been to Bar Harbor, we'll be there in a few weeks and I can't help but wonder how it could stack up to Percé. But I also took note that the guy who made my sandwich on Bonaventure Island said that Bar Harbor is his favorite place, so who knows? Zoe has adjusted better to losing her eyesight than we ever could have hoped for. She's always had a terrific happy-go-lucky attitude, and that hasn't changed one bit.

Bar Harbor very busy and touristy. But the island itself is cool especially the less busy Southwest and Bass Harbors. It’s been a while since I’ve been there but enjoyed my time….some very cool sunrises sitting on the cliffs in one the campgrounds I stayed at. It will be interesting to get your take and comparison forthcoming. I really liked where you were at there and bonus that everything was close by. Have a great week!

Wow, I’m planning to return to Prince Edward Island next year and I might just go up this way first. That site for $55 may be the best view to dollar ratio ever (well, east of the Mississippi). Those vintage lobster boats remind me of PEI (as you have likely seen by now). Many of them have been passed down 3-4 generations. Also, this video must be in the 95th percentile for length!

@@OdysseyCamper LOL, It was a Herculean editing effort that I hope to not have to repeat anytime soon. You most certainly should head up here either to or from PEI as long as you're in the neighborhood. It's a very different sense of place than PEI, but also very different in its scenery, culture, etc. It has been one of our favorite stops this season.
