Ep. 22 US Travel Ban to North Korea & Implications for Americans & Koreans (LIFT Guest Special)

Discover North Korea Podcast Episode 20!
Today I'm joined by three special guests to discuss the US travel ban to North Korea, the impacts this has on North Korea, on a global scale, and indeed on American citizens themselves. We discuss everything from North Korean tourism to cultural exchanges in North Korea, and why even the US travel ban to North Korea exists. And finally, what you can do to help...
A more political conversation today; please see the note at the end for a disclaimer in terms of this usually a-political podcast.
A massive thank you to Beka and Ji-Yeon over at the LIFT Campaign and Ju-Yeon from Nodutdol for appearing on the show today.

Please note: Discover North Korea as part of the 'Zoe Discovers' network attempts to remain a-political as much as possible. Despite this topic being inherently political in nature, I have attempted as much as possible to stay concerned with the human side of things. Any political opinions and ideas shared by others on this podcast are not necessarily my own and I seek simply to facilitate the conversation. Nevertheless, what I will mention and what is clear in the podcast is that I do wish the US travel ban to North Korea can end as soon as possible so humanitarian work and cultural exchanges in North Korea that are so important to the country and on a global scale in terms of the peace-making process can continue operating as soon as possible.

Hello, im a white South African(more specifically an afrikaner)curious about travelling to the DPRK. Here we only hear american media when it comes to that country and there are no north korean defectors to talk to. That is why i want to travel there, some people have already tried to persuade me not to go but im going anyways because i am very curious on learning what is really happening in our world.

It's a blatantly grotesque human rights violation to prevent anyone from visiting their loved ones 😱

So Americans are still completely banned from traveling to North Korea under any circumstances? Or is it just highly advised and suggested not to travel there and a kind of go at your own risk deal

hey im also american but im getting my israeli passport soon so i can go on that. interestingly enough, we have level 4 travel advisories for a shitload of countries, but none FORBID us from going anywhere except NK. TA's for somalia, sudan etc say things like "DRAFT A WILL, make funeral arrangements" etc.. crazy ass shit. but with NK were explicitly not permitted to travel there unless its "for the national interest of the US." thats why when zoe made another video with a christian missionary and kept passive-agressively deleting my comments, he was allowed to go only because he was attempting to colonize NK by way of christian nationalism. ill save this comment cause she'll delete it again but yeah. ill try and see if i can tag you somewhere else, shes super fake but i appreciate her vids nonetheless.

Since the USA sanctions NK. We visa waiver people are also sanctioned. If we visit NK for tourism purposes we have to get a tourist visa to enter the USA and can't qualify for the ESTA. To me it sounds like discrimination and restrictions on freedom of movement which is a violation of human rights.

I completely understand that Americans visiting a country helps with having an open-minded perspective. But the travel ban is for safety reasons. Dictatorships can be dangerous when it comes to arbitrary arrests, no rights as a potential criminal defendant (no due process/maranta rights) as they would have under the rule of law. The rule of law isn't existent in dictatorships.
