Ep. 218: Oregon Trail | Farewell Bend RV travel camping

After following the Snake River for 300 miles, emigrants following the Oregon Trail in the 1800s finally left the river bank and headed northwest into Oregon at Farewell Bend. While camping at Farewell Bend State Recreation Area we explore Oregon Trail history including the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and the Van Ornum Massacre. We even find the ruts left in the eastern Oregon desert by the emigrants' wagon trains! We also check out the Weiser Sand Dunes and the historic town of Baker City.

    My husband’s aunt and uncle, Jan and Bill Moeller were full time RV-ers. They wrote articles for Trailer Life Magazine and they wrote a book on the Oregon Trail, Crazy Horse, Custer, and other books. I believe their books are still being sold on Amazon! They are both gone but I’m sure if they were still living, they’d totally have a KZread channel!!!

    If you have not read Rinker Buck's book "The Oregon Trail - A Modern Day Adventure" you should as you traverse the Trail. Rinker along with his Brother Nick and Nick's little dog Olive Oyl did the Trail in 2013 in a Peter Scheuttler original wagon pulled by three mules. It is a must read for folks who have an interest in the the Oregon Trail story.

You'll really enjoy this week's forthcoming episode as well for a glimpse at the side of Oregon that most folks never see. And we too drew the mental comparison between the emigrants and today's RV traveler. Those covered wagons were kind of the first RVs. 😁

  • @GrandAdventure

    @GrandAdventure

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sure thing Gord. The drone footage in tonight's episode, actually, is our first to be shot with the DJI Mini 2. I'm actually fairly impressed thus far. The camera is only of a marginally lesser quality than that of its big brother, our DJI Mavic Pro, at a fraction of the price, and of course the Mini 2's portability is greatly enhanced by its tiny size. My only concern thus far is its greater susceptibility to moderate breezes, but I'm still learning its behavior in that regard.

  • @gorrdd

    @gorrdd

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@GrandAdventure Marc, I heard that one of it's attributes was it's ability to remain stable in brisk winds. It seems that all of the DJI drones have that technology built into their logic. The motors are powerful enough, relative to their weight, to counter windy conditions. The real issue is the response time. But they seem to have that under control. Between the built in gimbal, built-in stability control, and power/response correction... all of these DJI drones never seem to show much distracting movement, if any, under normal windy conditions. Has that been your experience thus far, with the Mini 2? Gord

  • @GrandAdventure

    @GrandAdventure

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@gorrdd it's true that DJI has stability nailed down. The issue with the Mavic Mini 2 is simply its light mass. With the light weight and tiny props, there's only so much breeze it can handle before it becomes un-flyable in wind. It's supposedly rated at up to ~23 mph but I haven't yet pushed it that far. Of course, too, winds 100 to 400 feet aloft will be somewhat stronger than they are on the ground.

  • @gorrdd

    @gorrdd
