Ep. 215: Twin Falls, Idaho | RV camping travel kayaking

The Snake River has carved a canyon through the Snake River Plain up to 500 feet deep and a quarter mile wide in the area surrounding Twin Falls, Idaho. In this week's episode of Grand Adventure, while RV camping for cheap at the Twin Falls County Fairgrounds RV Park we'll watch BASE jumpers leap from the Perrine Bridge, visit the site where Evel Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in 1974, explore a WWII Japanese internment camp at Minidoka National Historic Site, and of course visit the area's marquee attraction Shoshone Falls before we hatch a plan to see the falls from a very unique angle.

    Great tour of area & history that isn’t widely known. Much appreciated! I was also in awe as I watched you all kayak near those amazing falls! Definitely on my bucket list now! The majestic falls as well as the gorgeous cliffs around them seemed to have a primordial feel to them. What came to my mind was that this area could have served as a filming location for a “Planet of the Apes” movie! Great video; thanks again.

    Oh my goodness! That campground is right in my back yard 5 minuets from my house!. Not only that, that was my monster truck show you have footage of. That was me on the microphone. I hope we didn't disturb your peace too much. I would so much have loved to meet you in person and I drove by you no less that 10 times that weekend! A fantastic video that showed me things I didn't even know was so close to my house!

    Generally unbiased presentation of internment camp info, though the sad music was leading. I appreciated that. People 70 years on generally like to think they wouldn't do such a thing despite facing a national existential threat from an ethnic nation.

    We appreciate that, Robert. We take great pains to not tackle anything that can be interpreted as political one way or the other, as we see no point in pissing off half of our audience for no good reason. There are plenty of outlets for those things, such that GA doesn't need to be one of them. We're an RV channel focused on travel and RV life...period. However, it was admittedly tough for us to remain completely neutral on the internment camp because we hope that our nation wouldn't again lock up its own citizens solely due to their ethnic background. We found the presentation at Minidoka to be completely moving. That said, we understand the mentality of the time, when our leaders couldn't be sure who was a spy for the Japanese and who was not. At the time our administration thought that what they were doing was necessary following the attack on Pearl Harbor. We'd like to believe that in today's era we're a bit better and more precise at identifying threats. As for the soundtrack we try to match the mood with what we're filming, and as you can probably imagine some happy little ditty wouldn't fit the situation at all, no matter what some's perspective is on the subject. Thanks so much for your feedback!

    @@GrandAdventure This problem exists in an even worse fashion today than it did during WWII, due to our far more diverse population, where we now have so many split national loyalties even among naturalized U.S. citizens and their offspring (primarily along ethnic or religious lines)--in a very public and very vocal fashion--that we will likely face this same conundrum in the future should we again face an existential national threat. In any case, thanks again for presenting in an even-handed fashion.

    Looked like Team Cougar at the beginning. Nice to see everyone. Not bad for a fair ground spot. 👍🏼 Cannot imagine what it felt like for the Japanese Americans having to leave their homes and be put into places like Minidoka. We know how long they stayed there, but one has to remember, they did not know how long they were going to be there for. I thought you were going to do some white water kayaking from up river. 😉 Great price for a kayak rental. We might have to do that when we go back. Thanks for sharing. Ram 👍🏼👍🏽

    Thanks as always Gary! Some of those small, skinny falls were nearly as stunning as the main event, in their own sort of way. Ironically, a week before our paddle there was much more water flowing over the falls, which you can see in our shots from the overlook. By the time we kayaked to the falls the following week, there was much less water flowing. Not to be a downer but I do know that sadly, the hydroelectric company dropped the flow over the weekend in between to locate a teenager who had regrettably drowned swimming at Pillar Falls. For obvious reasons that fact never made it into the video.

I never knew all West Coast state Japanese families had the option to voluntarily move East, to non-military areas and remain free. I thought all Japanese were incarcerated across the country. We are about to head up to Idaho, NW Montana and for Eastern Oregon for Sept and Oct. How is the smoke? Should we consider rescheduling the northern sections of Idaho and Eastern Oregon and head down into south Idaho? Thoughts? Thanks for any advice.

  • @GrandAdventure

    @GrandAdventure

    2 жыл бұрын

    Bryan, our advice is keep your plans because things vary dramatically day to day. Since this video was filmed we moved on to McCall (ID), Joseph (OR) and we're now along the Snake River northwest of Boise. You'll see these episodes in coming weeks. We headed that way because, at the time, the smoke was well south of that region -- most of it is still coming from the fires in Northern California. McCall started off clear but smoke moved in shortly after we arrived, and varied day to day. Our week in Joseph the smoke was so intense, we could barely see a mile! I think that our disappointment over the visibility in the gorgeous Wallowa Mountains will show through in that episode, and we're dying to get back someday when it's smoke-free. Now that we're northwest of Boise, things are clearing up rapidly thanks to the change of weather moving in, and visibility is forecast to be quite good midweek. In short, it all depends on which way the upper and mid-level steering currents are blowing each day.

  • @GrandAdventure

    @@bryanm3224 that's a good plan. We did not boondock near Joseph, as cell service that we need for work disappears even before you enter public lands.
