Ep. 21 - Reclaiming Arab Judaism with Hadar Cohen

This week on the Palestine Pod, we sit down with Hadar Cohen, a Mizrahi feminist multi-media artist, healer and educator originally from Jerusalem with lineage from all over the Middle East including Iran, Iraq, Syria and and Palestine. Hadar is a Jewish mystic with Sephardic roots who works to build decolonial frameworks for worshiping God. Her artistic mediums include performance, movement, writing, weaving, sound and ritual. During the global intifada of unity, Hadar came out as a strong anti-zionist Jewish voice from on the ground. She speaks to us about her family's presence in Palestine harkening to a time long before Zionism, the power of memory as a liberation tool, and the meaning and importance of decolonizing the mind. Lara quotes Hadar's fierce rebuke of Zionism while imagining a life in Palestine post Zionism. Hadar insists on reclaiming the Arab Jewish identity as something separate and unique from European notions of Judaism in response to Arab Jewish trauma that resulted from the Zionist movement. Michael and Hadar dive deeper into the Zionist weaponization of anti-semitism and Michael reminds us that "nobody does anti-semitism like Zionists do."

15min in; ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ & Hats off to this young lady. What she is doing is very dangerous, very brave! Also, very heartbreaking for her. She knows it, she has seen it & lived it. She has the thousand yard stare. My heart goes out to her. But this is going to get worse. Much worse. Right now. Right here. #1 What is Zionism? It is a world political party. That's it. No more. No less. They just happen to utilize the black arts. We will get there. In that stare, I see shame. Let's tell her, there is no shame in deceit. 🙏

Thank you for this soul-healing episode. Hadar, your soul, mind and smile represent the holy land. The holy land was NEVER about hate, racism, war or cruelty. Jewish people don't need zionism to belong because they were always part of the Middle East. The borders were created by western imperialism to divide us. We are brothers and sisters and colonialism will never change this. I'm not religious but I hope Palestinians and Jewish people from all around the world find peace and heal. I will keep fighting antisemitism whenever I see it and will defend Judaism from the crimes of the right-wing state of Israel. And I know there are many Jewish people like you who will defend me as well. This whole conflict wounded us. Sometimes I just want to give up my Palestinian heritage because it just hurts how whenever I bring it up I'm looked down upon as a terrorist or a useless stupid Arab. A lot of times we are told that our identity never existed. I truly don't care about nationalism. The borders are arbitrary anyway. I just want peace. I hope that one day we will all live in a secular world here in the Middle East and be treated with love and respect.

Beautifully put. I know how you feel, it’s hard to be Palestinian sometimes but that is one goal within the Zionist agenda. Same goes for the erasure of the Arab Jewish identity and conflating Judaism with zionism. It wounded all of us. We can never give up our heritage not because of the idea of nationalism but because it’s baked inside the blood and land. There needs to be truth and reconciliation in order to heal together and move towards peace. One democratic secular state for all. ✌🏼

As an American Ashkenazic Jew, I see the word "Zionism" two different ways, as a general aspiration for a Jewish homeland in the Middle East, and as the very specific project that we have seen taking place throughout the 20th Century. I reject the latter definition but embrace the former. Zionism as an aspiration that isn't bad or wrong; the Zionist colonial project we are living with is not good, not for the Palestinians and not good for us. One particular incident in my life changed my perception of Zionism. I was hitchhiking in the state of Oregon in the 1990s in my 40s, and I was picked up by a white guy in a truck going up to Portland. I told him as we were driving that I was Jewish, and he smiled to me and said, "I'm Christian, but I will bet you that I love Israel more than you do." The hair on the back of my neck stood up when he said that. I already knew that American Christians had a project of fulfilling their religion's prophecies of Jesus's Second Coming, The competitiveness that he confronted me with, that Christians are more Jewish than Jews are, was absurd and stupid and ridiculous but also odious. He expressed his zeal for possessing Israel, and I knew that it came from an assumption of Christian superiority, and I knew that the Christian plan for Israel was to weaponize it by promoting war in Israel against all of her Muslim neighbors; the removal of all Arabs from Israel was key for fulfillment of conditions to receive Jesus back to the world. I couldn't get away from this guy fast enough. In the years since this confrontation, I've come to the understanding that as far as I can tell, Zionism is a Christian colonial project that is fundamentally in conflict with basic Jewish values. But the Christian project is frighteningly stealthy; outside of Church congregations the program to control Israel is largely unknown throughout the world. When I tell people about it they think it's an interesting idea but largely irrelevant. The assumptions of what I call Christian Zionism is taken for granted and understood to be completely aligned with Jewish aspirations. I say it to people like this: in the future, people will recognize the contemporary war in the Middle East as a war by Christians against both Muslims and Jews. That's how I see it now, with Jews the world over oblivious to the real conflict existing among us. But I have to go to work and have no more time to write this. Thank you for bringing this conversation to Jews like me who are thirsty for news from the Semitic world!

This really gives some perspective. From the other side of the world, I always found it confusing how I keep hearing that American Christians love Jews so much that they want to send all Jews to Israel but then it kept occurring to me how do they expect the people to stay in a perpetual state of war and fear in conflict. Nobody that loves a people would do that. But learning more about this you realise the Jewish people being gathered to Israel are simply sacrificial lambs that are disposable for the Christian's selfish needs. The Chrisitans are using the Jewish people to hurt the Palestinians, bringing hate to the Jewish people from the Muslims, while the Chrisitians are hiding in the shadows. The whole situation is really so sad.

We shared a Sabbath dinner once and he prayed in a dialect of Hebrew which amazed me. @@safuwanfauzi5014 Yes. The Palestinians are more closely related to the Canaanites than Ashkenazi or Yemeni Jews. Yemeni Jews are basically Arabs who converted to Judaism. Palestinians are just Canaanites who converted to Judaism, then Christianity, then Islam eventually. So its really ridiculous. Is being Jewish a religion or an ethnic group? If its a people, genetically the Palestinians are the descendants of the Jewish (Canaanite) people who never left. Its so ridiculous its mind boggling.

No instant access to information. Instant access to corporate fiscal reports that really tell you who is really who & connected to who. That is the Zionist greatest fear. So. The pen is mightier than the sword? The Keyboard is a nuclear weapon. The Zionist worst enemy. You are just getting started. We killed Netanyahu's government. What did we get? 2 more & Mileakowsky aka Netanyahu didn't go anywhere. He now heads the Knesset. They elect the President & Prime Minister. The Nascent Sanhedrin separates the people from their government, enforces Sanhedrin & Halaka Law & dispenses punishment. Democracy? Israel is a walled prison & they almost convinced you to like it! Almost. The Zionist got caught. DNA. Then that took us everywhere else! And I mean everywhere! We got a long way to go to Hell & back. Goodnite. For now & God Bless everyone of you! 🙏
