[Ep. 127] How Thoughts Create Our Lives w/ Byron Katie

In this episode, we welcome an incredible teacher of Luis, Byron Katie. She is a speaker and author who teaches a method of self-inquiry known as "The Work."
Byron and Luis muse on what it means to relate to the ego and to our thoughts rather than trying to beat the ego or suppress our thoughts, i.e. what it means to be in a place of curiosity rather than judgement. The Work was born directly out of Byron Katie’s experience and she shares with us the impact it has had on her life as well as for other students of The Work.
Also, we get to witness The Work in action! Byron guides Luis through The Work in relation to an intrusive thought he had right before the recording of this episode.

22:57 when she says "we can't beat the ego." Blew my mind. All this time I've been in a struggle to beat it. The concept of nurturing it, understanding it, showing it love - wow. Thank you.

This has been a really helpful interview for me. My favorite quote was when Byron said " it's a painful world to attempt to manipulate the way other see us." I had been wanting to make a few more KZread videos for my small KZread channel but was afraid they would not be good enough to post. But this interview has convinced me to go ahead and post them, as a way to not attempt to manipulate the way others may view the videos.

So much wisdom and respect here! I was moved to tears feeling how relaxed and accepting you both are. From the start this interview evoked and allowed deep feelings of 'past' pain and empathy. Love, once covered over with busy doing now Rises. Thank you so much for seeing and comforting the 'terrified child' that wisdom knows has not and could not ever leave the Light, except in a dream.

another thing that came to mind for me in looking for reasons why “i DONT need katie to like me or think I’m brilliant” is that IF in any moment she did NOT like him, it would allow an opportunity for her to be honest about that and maybe share something really important for him/anyone listening to learn that they otherwise wouldn’t if she was just liking him the whole time and didn’t find anything to question/disagree with. like potentially a disagreement/criticism might have shown him something to learn about himself that could be ultimately really helpful/enlightening. for us as an audience to watch someone with an open mind face rejection/criticism and learn something valuable from it could potentially be a major gift to all

I've been doing The Work since 2013, when I was required to read Katie's book Loving What is, for a class assignment and then doing the worksheet. I have followed her ever since ... diving into her other books and watching video's of her practicing the work with others. I've seen other interviews and quite frankly, been frustrated by the same questions being asked of Katie with every interview. This is perhaps the first interview, where new questions were being asked. I've always wondered how Katie navigates her world now that she lives the Work and the Turnarounds. You're vulnerability Luis, was refreshing, raw and authentic to my own insecurities and dealings with myself. Getting in touch with my feelings has been a pathway through to my thoughts and I love the way you shared your own experience with your feelings. Thank you for offering up this interview with your world. It was a gift.

Katie apparently had an experience of the emptiness of Everything and the illusory self as no thing. Then, she seemingly reversed engineered it so that other illusory "selves" could also experience their own absence. But when the "me" apparently collapses, there is no one left to experience its own absence. Seeking stops. It's Everything that is energy walling, Katieing, reading, loving, crying, paining, etc. Self-inquiry keeps the illusory "me" seeking for something that does not exist and has never been lost. It's Everything hiding in plain sight. Everything is whole and complete, that includes the story of "me."

This reinforces the story of me, feeds the me, and keeps the me identified with an artificial self that is a mental construct. It's an endless loop of searching for an imaginary liberation that is already everywhere. It seems like a dog chasing his own tail or a hamster on a wheel, staying busy while trying to find what is already hiding in plain sight. Boundless freedom.

That was the biggest challenge for me. What has helped me is adding on the word "now". So "My husband stole from me." Is it true now? And what you might find is that your mind is bringing the image to you now and it hurts, rather than you're stealing from you. If I do the turnaround with your example I find "I stole from me". Right now, this story and this memory is stealing my peace and taking me back to the pain of the situation.

And I'd add: I think in general it's about being curious and creative about the thoughts you question, to play with it. So, if questioning a fact doesn't seem fruitful to you in that moment (although as Luis also wrote you can always play even with facts without gaslighting yourself), you can question beliefs that you created based on the fact. So in your case with your husband it could be something like: I can't trust anyone. People are bad. He doesn't love me. My relationship will never heal from that. I deserved that. I mustn't be angry because I love him.... It's about cultivating the joy of questioning everything the ego gets stuck with, and there are many ways to do that, be playful. :)
