Salaam haleykum brother! As a senegalese who lives in luton/UK , my little brother & I, have gone through the same experience. Honestly, this stereotype over black people in Islam has driven me to do my salats at home instead of the masjid Alhamdulillah, I am not being judgmental but, . It really hurts when
May Allah reward Mustafa Briggs, author of the excellent "Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islam”, for this throroughly engaging interview and his work in uncovering the long suppressed and hidden history of Black people and Islam (prior to Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad and not focusing on the slave trade). The Brother has done his research and has brought it to the masses - including the story of prophets and companions who were Black and how much of the Qur’an centers on the African continent! Let's be fair and give the contribution of Black people in Islam the same attention we give Muslims from other ethnic backgrounds or geographical areas!al-Allamah Abu'l Faraj ibn al-Jawzi, rahimuallah, a scholar of the highest order, understood this and, as a result, wrote the book "Illuminating The Darkness: The Virtues of Blacks and Abyssinians", which Habeeb Akande (whom he referenced in his talk) improved upon by his similarly titled "Illuminating the Darkness: Blacks and North Africans in Islam" and "Illuminating The Darkness: Blacks And African Muslims in Brazi.l" I strongly recommend Habeeb’s books, along with "The Unknown Arabs" by Tariq Berry, "Islam in Africa Throughout History" by Shaykh Muhammad Aman Al-Jami, "Centering Black Narrative: Black Muslim Nobles Among The Early Pious Mulsims" by Ahmad Muibarak & Dawud Walid - and, with regard to American history - "Muslims in American History: A Forgotten Legacy" by Gerald F. Dirks and "Servants of Allah: African Muslims Enslaved in the Americas" by Sylvaine Diouf.
