This channel needed this. He unpacked the false orientalist perspective of pan africans who think that Islam introduction to Africa was by the sword and that slavery in the Arab world was the same as the trans atlantic slave trade. Everyone can research the claims he makes in this interview. The evidence are there if your are honest and open minded.

Mustafa Briggs is a wonderful scholar and he is right about, especially, Anglophone orientalism. The French, Spanish and Portuguese are a little better. But all orientalisms are Western and originated with the Spanish "reconquesta". It is amazing how many Africans, especially, the Western Orthodox Christians, that buy into and regurgitate the English speaking orientalists.

As Imam Shafi'i, rahimahullah, stated, what was not a Deen that day i.e. the Prophet's time can not be Deen today. Learn TAWHEED and SUNNAH. Read the books of the Salaf. Almost all of the historians and scholars of Islam followed the ways of the Salaf and during the time of the Khalaf, al Ghazzali and others lived a way of Tasawwuf and he was a follower of the path of Ihsan which to many means Tazkiyyah, which is the science of good manners in reference to Allah and His Creation. Saying follow the Salaf and follow Tauheed is a very broad statement in this day and age and statements mostly ascribed to Wahabi and Salafi followers whose dogma is derived from ibn Tayyima and Mohammad Abdul Wahab and expounded further by the likes of Salafiyya like Hasan al Banna, Maududi and Sayed Qutub. These people has rebranded a watered down version of Islam and today claims to represent Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah. They do lectures on You Tube and other social media claiming their superiority over earlier scholars of the Salaf and the Khalaf teaching Kitab ul Tawhid written by Mohammad Abdul Wahab, Tazkiatul Iman written by Ismail Delvi, Sayyid Qutub and Albany whilst ridiculing earlier scholars that lived nearer to the period of our Master Mohammad Sallalahu Alayhi Wassallam. They pay scant regard to the books on Tauheed by Our Ulema Raghimallah, such as Imams Tahawi, Al Ashari, Maturidi etc that teaches the proper respect and belief towards Allah and His creation. Tassawwuf can be learnt from a school 🏫 of good manners such as the Naqshbandiyya, Shadhilliyya, Qadriyya and others. A good starting place would be websites such as Sufilive and Masjid Muhammad of Atlantic City, both which has You Tube channels and both channels carries tons of lectures which should be able to present you with a lot of information ℹ️ regarding ascending the path of Tassawwuf. In order to walk 🚶 the path you need to follow a Shaykh or Spiritual leader which has a reliable link 🔗 going back all the way of our Nabi Sallalahu Alayhi Wassallam. Don't be intimidated by idiots calling themselves slaves of Allah and suffers from tunnel vision. Islam is an ocean. There is many paths and many pitfalls. Yet for every period the Awliya is in charge. Search 🔍 for the one that reminds you of Allah and His Habib Mustapha Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam and follow him. Tassawwuf is not a sect in Islam. It is part and parcel of the Islamic landscape and shall remain so. Tassawwuf(Tazkiyya or Ihsan as referenced to in Hadith Gibril) has always been part and parcel of tge Islamic landscape in almost all of the Islamic landscape since the advent of Islam and was profoundly advocated by and inculcated within themselves and others by our Nabi Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam and his Sahaba RA. If this was not the case why is the lives of so many great scholars of Islam magnified and glorified all over the Muslim world 🌎. A word of caution: Stay very far from people with their unkept beards and red scarves, especially in matters relating to the teaching of our religion. Run 🏃 away if you have to. Their path is definitely not suited for those who has ascetic tendencies. Read your recent history on Islam and you shall understand why the Kwarij which they themselves represent today, has been the 1st Muslims to shed the blood of other Muslims dating back to the time of the Khalifa Rashidoon. They certainly do not represent Ahlus Sunnah and are the real Biddatis in Islam. They were the ones that revolted against the Islamic Caliphate and together with the Colonialists is the real reason that the Muslim Ummah is in the state it is today.

Mustafa Briggs is a very educated man. I disagree on his take of Islam's spread in West Africa. It was violent. Ousman Dan Fodio definitely imposed Islam on pagan peoples in the Adamawa plateu and its surrounds. The Chamba of Taraba State Nigeria, and and Grassfield peoples of Northwest Cameroon were destabilized by Fulani jihadic expansion, and they fiercely resisted Islam. Unfortunately, their later contact with European Christianity would be even more devastating.

Islam actually isn’t an Arab ideology at all. Islam is the most recent iteration of pure monotheism which was founded when the first man (Adam), who was an African, first submitted to the one God. Adam was the first Muslim. A Muslim is simply one who submits to God irrespective of race or ethnic affiliation. The African pharaoh Akhenaten was also a pure monotheist or Muslim prior to the Arabs. Other prophets, prior to the prophet Muhammad, also existed who promoted Islam and weren’t Arabs. In fact, Muhammad is only mentioned 4 times in the Quran compared to the 25 times that Jesus is mentioned who also wasn’t an Arab. The Arabs have erroneously become synonymous with Islam only because the Prophet Muhammad was an Arab, and not because Islam itself is an Arabic ideology.

Respectfully speaking, our beloved brother still isn't acknowledging the true Black African origins of Islam. He's still using loads of false narratives to attempt to infuse heavy Arab influence on the formation of Islam. In the Medieval times, a black Islamic scholar named Al-Jahiz wrote a book named “Fakhr al-Sudan ala al-Bidan” explicitly stating that Prophet Muhammad was black. Whereas, the Quran is even more primary source because Surah 15:26 clearly states that Adam was black & in Surah 9:97 (& many other Surahs) Arabs are explained to initially be enemies to Islam! A lot of people are using Hadiths to try to explain the history. Hadiths were written by pale Arabs hundreds of years after the Quran was written. It was black Nilo-Saharan peoples of the eastern Sudan who founded Islam.
