Honestly, the whole story is PERFECT reddit food, so it kind of screams "fake story" to me. I'm not religious, but like 98% of my Christian (of any denomination) friends are genuinely good people. Also, I hate the label of "racism" in stories, because us as the listener are often not privy to enough information to make a judgement on that. Making a comment on how American Universitys' are bringing in more students from other countries than our own, and giving them government scholarships using American taxpayer money is a reasonable topic. It's not inherently racist. I'm not saying it wasn't said in a racist way, but how would I know? I've seen people called racist just because they want to have a honest discussion about how they and their children are expected to pay more and more taxes every year to support people from other countries, while our own education, Healthcare, and other systems continue to erode. I'm starting to honestly hate the word "racism", because it seems to just be a word that is used to control the speech of others. Honestly, im not excusing the people in this story, they sound horrible, but my younger sister calls my catholic relatives "racist monsters" so often that I've become extremely skeptical of people using all these buzzwords. Non-secular people just seem to have this huge need to prove they're so much more moral than religious folks, and i just don't see that reflected in real life. We're all human, meaning we all have great capacity for good or evil at almost any moment.

@@cricket5692 as a poc I think you just live on another planet, because I can assure you the amount of people who claim non-racist things as racist is a MASSIVE minority. Complaining about another race "invading" your spaces is nothing short of racist and its honestly baffling to me that you're trying to go through massive mental gymnastics to claim otherwise. I mean seriously.... That's the problem right there! You are taking something actually racist: white people disliking asians because they feel like they are being "invasive". And associating it with something completely different (aka non-racist): The U.S putting more resources towards non-citizens vs actual citizens... Just to act like it's usage is an issue. When it's not. I am not sure if you realize this, but those two are not the same in any way. I think you know that, though. Like the difference is pretty clear. So I will pass the same advice my therapist gave to me, and recommend you do some self reflection and think about why you feel the need to do that. Like I cannot name a SINGLE other poc who calls people "racist" over.... Complaining about taxes. Be so serious. They WILL call you racist if you start *ranting* about people from those countries and how inferiors or undeserving of decent lives they are, though. Which, again... Is not the same as "complaining about paying more taxes". "Also, I hate the label of "racism" in stories, because us as the listener are often not privy to enough information to make a judgement on that." Here's the thing... A person telling you a story knows more context than you ever will. You just have to work with that. Why in the world would you try to act like you know more than the person who was actually there?? Trying to dig into a story beyond the information you have been given is, quiet frankly, a complete and utter waste of time. And it makes you look like a know-it-all with a massive ego. When you enter middle school and you start learning about analysis and context clues, they teach you to make a conclusion *using what the author has given you*, you don't pull shit out of thin air just because you "don't have enough information". That's called making things up. When you read a story, your job is to work with that story. Not make shit up. That's not what you are supposed to do. Unless you want to write a fanfic I guess.

S2: As much as OP wants to skip the court date, which I completely understand why, but if he skips he could very easily lose custody of the kids completely. Also if he knows there's a friendly connection between MIL etc and the judge, Dad could file a complaint based on the judges preferential treatment towards that side of the family instead of what he should be basing decisions on which is what's best for the kids. But do NOT skip court otherwise you WILL lose your kids. I hope everything works out for the family and they remain safe with the dad and away from psycho grandma.

3rd story, having friends who don’t share the same political/social beliefs is not the same as having friends who advocate against human rights. There are some things that simply cannot be separated no matter how much we would like to believe they can. If your friends are racist/homophobic/sexist & you stay silent to ‘keep the peace/friendships, your silence is an endorsement their beliefs. In the words of Angela Davis, ‘In a racist society it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti racist.’ It’s an uncomfortable truth, but when you accept a racist/bigot in your social circle & don’t call them out, you are condoning racism. People like OP are a major reason why we have so many problems in this world. They believe they are smart & mature because they can put their differences aside to get along with others, failing to see how incredibly ignorant they actually are. If everyone behaved this way, no social justice movement would ever succeed. They see turning a blind eye to injustice as simply ‘minding their own business.’ Worst of all, he only (finally!) called out his friends behavior when it personally affected him. There are many situations that people might feel apathetic about until they or someone close to them experiences it, but it should never take a person experiencing what his fiancé did to realize how disgusting his friends are. They weren’t shy about voicing their disdain for several marginalized groups, their ignorance & hate were on full display. OP just didn’t see those things as an issue until they were directed at the woman he loves. I’m honestly surprised his fiancé stayed with him. I’d be seriously rethinking my decision to spend my life with someone & would be significantly concerned when I learned BM was his closest friend. Not just because I’d be worried that he might be just as awful & possibly very stupid, but the thought of having to frequently socialize with such terrible people is almost unbearable. I can only hope that OP learned a huge lesson from this & will do much better from now on. Remember, you are the company you keep!

Last story: The 1 phrase that kept going through my mind: Guilty by association. I'm not so sure that OP doesn't hold some of the beliefs of his friends. OP Bragged about being able to be friends with people who have such disgusting beliefs and ideas. I was floored. He had no clue how that made him look stupid, pathetic and disgusting. I really don't understand why/how his gal accepted his proposal for marriage.
