The large piece Le Noir de l'Étoile by Gerard Grisey hides many dimensions within itself. Six percussionists, each with a large set-up positioned around the audience, produce different sounds. At the centre is a pulsar 7500 light years away; a pulse rhythmically related to percussion, audible only through technology. Grisey has the six percussionists begin in six different tempos, which later synchronise: from the chaos of nature to the rules of nature. The piece wants to make audible our questions and thoughts about our relationship to the cosmos. A particular aspect of percussion music is the expression of energy through dynamics and rhythm. Grisey evokes the great void through slow, sparse and quiet parts until the supernova in dense climaxes.
Pulsars - the "clocks of space-time" - form the tonal and poetic starting point for a monumental space piece for six percussionists, carried by rotation, periodicity, deceleration and acceleration.
