Enough Is Enough, Something Needs To Be Done About NASCAR's Short Track Package | Dale Jr. Download

Спорт

After the NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville, the mood surrounding short-track racing seemed to be dire.
Dale Jr. is frustrated. Why?
- He can’t stand it when anyone talks about a short track losing a date
- He’s “burned out” on listening to the complaints - not because they are wrong, but because he has been saying the same thing for at least a year.
When will something change with the NextGen short-track package? How do we fight to improve the sport that we love?

I think that, in the midst of all this, NASCAR fans need to also make sure they have a good idea of what a good short track race looks like. I distinctly recall hearing of a Richmond race at the tail end of the Gen 6 era that went pretty much 100% green. This race was similar in ebb and flow to races of the past, and yet I also recall seeing a lot of complaining about the race being boring. Anecdotes, I know, but I recall seeing a lot of snoozing and snoring emojis surrounding NASCAR races that played out naturally and saw the field spread out a little. As someone who hasn't seen recent races, I have no clue if NASCAR fans are onto something or just making a bit deal about what were normal, mildly spread-out races. What do you folks even call a "good" short track race? And whatever that definition is has to be a realistic goal to achieve, because there's no way you're gonna turn Richmond and Martinsville into pack races....

Tbf, less weight would decrease the loads on the tires, and therefore decrease tire wear. Then again, Nissan's R35 GT-R was explicitly designed to be heavy to help with traction, so maybe having lightweights with more power than they can handle would make things more chaotic.

The playoffs were created to create drama and mimic other professional sports. Stage racing was initiated to create drama pure and simple like a phony reality show. Parity was initiated like in other sports and is boring boring boring! NASCAR created a superior race car for road racing and tried to apply it to ALL racing, with dismal results. NASCAR became politically correct and economically driven to a fault, losing focus on the pure competition of auto racing. Years ago brand focus was swapped for superstar branding. The cars are cookie cutter and competition is contrived by rules, aero adjustments, tire development, horse power manipulation and more. What the heck happened to stock car racing? It’s gone! NASCAR is focused on TV revenue, streaming revenue and brand revenue. Stock car racing? The best years are way way behind us. I feel fortunate to have followed stock car racing since the late sixties. Now, it sure is a disappointment.

Dale Earnhardt and retired drivers (which everyone’s want the job) should become the new board members for NASCAR. This is what happens when you have suits overseeing sport decisions. Everything is about the money, sponsor approval, regulation, and rules. It’s disgusting We need people who know what they’re actually talking about with this sport, it’s sad that it seems like the new fans of this sport know more about what it’s own drivers want the the sanctioning body does. More Horsepower (750+) is a good start, let these cars actually fucking rip and show why these are the best drivers in the world. I agree with Dale and have had this sentiment for a very long time even going into the Gen6 era, enough is enough NASCAR. Let the teams and drivers do what they want. Creativity and passion is what drove those “back marker” teams to be competitive.

It's very peculiar that when NASCAR introduced the "Grand American" series, which consisted of the Mustangs, Camaros, Mercury Cougars, and AMC Javelins; that those _Pony Cars_ were being the savior for the short tracks in the South. Now, over a half-century later with Mustangs and Camaros racing on short tracks, those retro-bodied styled cars are bones of contention for the short tracks in the South.

Here's the poblem with the money issue. If you keep doing what you're doing, all that money is gonna get lost long term instead of in the short with a potential to for a return. There will be no return if NASCAR just sits on its hands and doesn't give the fans what they want. So either invest some now and get a return, or lose out on any potential growth moving forward. That's the choice. As the saying goes, "you gotta spend money to make money."

Short Track Package improvements: Get rid of the rear diffusers, narrow up all 4 tires, increase the sidewall on the tires, reduce transaxle gears to 4 gears. These changes would only apply to short tracks. In the past before stage racing, the race would go on until someone either spun out or blew a tire. Green flag pit stops used to carry more weight on how the races turned out. The key is to make those race tires wear out and make the cars harder to run and more reliant upon mechanical grip. This is a car design issue. The Martinsville Xfinity Series race was fun to watch. Same weekend, same track, different race cars. Maybe do a tire test on a short track running grooved wet tires instead of slicks, then drivers would have to manage the grip or risk burning the tread off of the tires.

Wasn’t there a time when there were basically four types of cars - super speedway, intermediate, short track and road course? Some teams could make changes and use short track as a road course car. Now there’s none of that other than an aero package. It takes more than aero adjustments to do this. NASCAR has gone down it’s own path of self destruction through charters, caring about the feeling of the teams and ignoring the fans. Rewind the clock and reset a once great sport.

I’m thinking of a solution used by F1 to slow the cars down and create less grip during the V10 era of the early 2000’s. The cars were making over 1000hp, but also had early CAD generated aero creating massive amounts of downforce. The FIA went to Michelin and Bridgestone at the time, then Pirelli, and came up with the grooved tire. This slowed the cars down drastically. The cars were sliding more, so the drivers had to slow down more. Due to the contact patch being reduced, the drivers had to brake earlier and couldn’t use all of the throttle on corner exit. F1 also had different compounds, which I think would be interesting in NASCAR. A soft, medium, and hard compound. Softs will have the most grip, but wear faster, mediums will last longer and provide decent drip, and the hands will last the longest but the least amount of grip. I think it would be cool if NASCAR and Goodyear could use a similar concept and/or the grooved tire system.

I believe Dale hit it on the nail. I wish there was another tire manufacturer again. I know people will be pushed back on another tire manufacturer. Nascar is trying to control i think thats a awesome decision we all know why. Smaller teams with smaller budgets. We will continue losing fans of something doesn't change. Dale should be staying where he is at. Team owner, father, husband, and content provider.

It's safe to say Goodyear was mortified by what they saw at Bristol. There's extreme difficulty in convincing them to build a softer tire that wears out quickly. They are worried that, if it goes wrong, their Cup tires' performance will alter the perception of their road tires.

I became I NASCAR fan because of Jeff and Jimmie at Martinsville. I agree maybe the best way to fix this is working on the tire. However if that doesn't work I'm not talking about 100hp, I'm thinking like 250hp more. These cars should be making 1,000hp. They are worried about saving money, and I know they just signed a huge TV deal , however viewership is about to go off a cliff I believe. Summer is pretty much here and people have better things to do than watch crap racing.

My idea to wake-up the NA$CAR powers that be is when the green flag drops at short-tracks, to have the drivers all agree (closed door meeting) to drive in qualifying order, at pace-car speed, for the entire first segment. This should also be done at restrictor-plate races. When the fans get pissed-off and destroy the grandstands, maybe someone in charge will make things right.

The new car, as much as I like the ability for it to race on many types of tracks, the short track program has become trash. Put horsepower in the car, change the tire, whatever it takes, something needs fixed. And if something is tried and it does not work, try something else.

Put the front clip off the 4th or 5th Gen car on. Get rid of the stupid 1 lug nut, go back to 5 off / 5 on "15" wheels with the old size tires. Keep the body material but make it in sections so a car could be fixed. This is what I would do to fix the sheet show going on now.

Smaller brakes won't really change the braking zones, it'll just cause the brakes to wear out more, but once drivers adapt, it'll go back to being the same thing. Contact patch of the tire is where the grip and stopping comes from when applying the brake. Brake size matters very little. I know it doesn't seem right, like it would matter, but the difference is minimal.

The tires are only the main problem due to the low horsepower these cars run with. If the cars were unrestricted, as they should be (outside of Superspeedways), then tire degradation would be higher. The tire needs to be fixed, and the aero adjustments should just go away entirely at the short tracks, but those issues are secondary to the lack of speed. Slow speeds are the main culprit.
