‘Enough is enough’: Curfew to be imposed on youth in Alice Springs

The Northern Territory government is going to impose a curfew on everyone aged under 18 in the entire CBD of Alice Springs.
The curfew comes after violence erupted in Alice Springs with hundreds of people involved in riotous behaviour which left buildings and cars damaged and forced workers to barricade themselves inside.
The youth curfew will run for 14 days, from 6pm to 6am, and will be happening during Easter as well as the school holiday period, says Northern Territory Chief Minister Eva Lawler.
“If someone is under the age of 18, and they’re seen out in the town centre, they will be taken home, or taken to a safe place, kids are not safe on the street, and if they’re not safe at home, they will be taken somewhere else,” Ms Lawler said during a press conference on Wednesday.
“Enough is enough, I’ve heard loudly and clearly from the people of Alice Springs, we want Alice Springs to be a safe place.”

AND before the presumptuous do-gooders come at me, yeh I absolutely DO have solutions. The very first and indispensable one of those is stop segregating indigenous service delivery in this country. No need for indigenous medical/legal/youth services, all this does is perpetuate the status quo. We already have cultural sensitivity and awareness in ‘mainstream’ services, don’t we? Start dealing with DV, substance abuse, disenfranchised and uneducated youth in the same way cross-culturally. Stop framing shitty behaviour as ‘cultural’. Why do we even have these ghettos in particular towns? @@Wotwudino let me tell you the first few essentials 1. Stop invisible segregation of streaming public services according to race - there should be no special indigenous legal/medical/youth services there should be one service for all. Plenty of cultural sensitivity built in to ‘mainstream’ services nowadays. 2. Stop throwing money at ishoos that aren’t about money. Remember ATSIC? Could have built a whole new country with the dollars spent there that mostly went to nepotism and corruption. 3. Compulsory 1yr life skills training call it military if you want but if you’re not in f/t education or employment, you’re gon be getting up early, shining your shoes, making your bed, learning to cook, clean, be fit, get along with other people, learn some respect for others and yourself and the things you have. 4. Understand we’ve probably lost the current crop but kids roaming streets etc is a parenting fail. Nobody’s ‘born this way’ they are raised that way. Stop to ask the kids why the fck theyre out in the streets at all hours and the consistent theme is the same - a shitty environment at home. Whether it be adults partying, having drink ups, abuse of various kinds or just lack of food and clean living conditions, its almost always a lack of proper ‘home’. Chuck in some drugs, effects of fetal alcohol syndrome etcetc and here we are. 5. Juvenile Detention centres have had it backward for at least 50yrs. Brutalising brutes doesn’t fix them. Brains don’t fully develop till 25yo esp in boys. The system knows this. Brains don’t form pro-socially if you simply continue the neglect they’ve already been exposed to. Decent food, air, education and sunlight are needed not to show them a good time but to fix the damage already done and show them a different way.

@@tektako thank you and brilliantly said. Agree with all of it. I will say half the problem with young men of all races in Australia is what they’re exposed to outside of the home as well. There’s this growing culture of everyone wants to be a hard c$&t. Most rap music is poisoning young men’s brains and it’s so much worse than when I grew up in the 90’s listening to hip hop. There’s glorification of crime everywhere you look. You’ve got these flog influencers with millions of followers worshiping them because of their criminal past. If you grow up in a poor neighbourhood or town you’re already up against it regardless of race. Unfortunately for a lot of young Aboriginal men they’re told they’re victims more than being told they can be anything they want to be, and that’s from the media and government not their elders. As I said with the culture and music, even though I understand the small connection between Aboriginals and African Americans, I don’t think it helps constantly connecting the two. Haven’t watched it for years but NITV used to have some good stuff on it, but every other show was hood related and pumping the victim hood mentality, not to take away from some of the horrible stuff that happened to Aboriginal people and still does. Like all young men they just need more positive influences and role models.

The ones with their heads in the sand who say give them a piece of dirt and leave them to it don’t get that the whole country is held back when whole towns and sections of the population continue to be unrealised potential. Its a massive massive waste meanwhile we pat ourselves on the back at silly international ‘climate change’ conventions feeding a whole other BS industry we’re up to our necks in. This country has gone to the dogs and it doesn’t matter what party is in power none of them have a clue.

One big lie that needs to be countered is that the deciminilisation of crime leads to the eradication of crime. This is the BLM argument in the US and some claim there is evidence to prove it, however, in the last two years irrefutable evidence of the failure of this policy has been the incredible increase in crime and murder in certain US cities where this policy has beencomprehensively used. So to propose this is a valid policy has been patently shown to be a serious error, by the many deaths and much crime that has occurred elsewhere. Lamentably, this disasterous policy is also being deployed in Australian states with disasterous results and things need to change as a matter of urgency.
