He was only divisive among the elites. He spoke common sense for the vast majority. You would also struggle to find a racist bone in his body.

I remember many London dockers left their work to march to Westminster and show their support for Enoch after his speech.

I remember the speech. I was 18 and shocked. My father said “He’s right”. I’d never heard my father express any political views. I’m now 74 and I know E J Powell and my father were right.

I remember when I lived in Ireland over 50 years ago I thought he had a point. Many regarded him as the devil. Now today I wonder if they would say that

Why no mention of Powell being the first member of Parliament to raise the British excesses during the Mau Mau in Kenya?

You’re entirely correct. That ‘Hola’ speech was also one of his best. In reality, we looked at so much material we could have done an hr long video ok the man. So we had to trim the content down to the basics of his biography. But I invite anyone to read more into the man.

@@englishthroughhistory I think it is important, because it shows that Powell was a more nuanced individual than the simple racist normally allowed.

@@englishthroughhistory He also opposed the shooting of the IRA terrorists in Gibraltar in 1988 and he supported gay rights. He opposed the Commonwealth. But nobody mentions that because they want to just smear him as a "racist" for his opposition to the immigration invasion. On that subject, every indigenous person in Britain now acknowledges he was right.

Indeed so. It’s hard to label him at all really- very nuanced. I’d say he was an imperialist at heart like many people of his generation, but he is many things to many people.

Enoch Powell had foresight, he was extreme . But! How prophetic he was. Immigrants of a certain.religious groups now attempting to gain more influences in politcal parties and then parliament . A fear that the UK could well become an Islamic state . Perhaps elitist influencers and movements are doing this by huge immigration into the UK illigally and europe

I can't believe I am yet again hearing the suggestion Powell was warning of "rivers of blood". This is wrong. He recounted a conversation with a constituent who expressed deep concerns about the future of Britain with respect to immigration and illustrated the concerns of ordinary British citizens about immigration policies. They were NOT his words!

  • @englishthroughhistory

Indeed he was, in general, recounting his conversation with a constituent. Allegedly he stated ""In this country in 15 or 20 years' time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man". However, the 'Rivers of Blood' quote was from Powell himself. He was actually quoting from his Classical background- the writer Virgil.

I find it frankly disheartening that so many comments are totally agreeing with Enoch's rhetoric and not at least having a nuanced view. It's not just that, if his immigration plans happened, I wouldn't even be alive, or at least be the member of Brtish society I am, its that victims of war would be left to suffer for the sake of protecting culture, and that it would open up a canyon of racial division even further. People say he wasn't racist, or that he's right, but look at the language he used in his infamous speech: "the black man shall have the whiphold over the white", there is no evidence of racial minorities controlling the white population, unless he views the acceptance of other cultures to flourish in the UK as somehow a direct assault on the nation. It creates a 'us vs them' mentality, and uses persuasion by fear to deny the prospect of racial unity or UK civil rights progress. He was not a visionary, give it the slightest bit of scrutiny and see past the metaphors, and a large chunk of his argument is flawed.
