O.M.G this video was soooo good! I'm a type 3 and my husband is a type 5. You described the 5 so well. I really appreciate the side point you made about 3s "always have to look nice" and 5s look like slobs lol. I can honestly say that as a 3 I don't always look nice. When I'm at home my hair may be all over my head (or in a scarf) and I've got on yoga pants and a t-shirt. But like you said about your son, I have an inner confidence that tells me I'm still attractive so I don't care in that moment if I look "the part" or not. Of course when I go to church or social events I make sure I look good. My husband is the same way, in fact he takes longer than me getting ready lol! He cares so much about his haircut being right, his clothes being pressed out and even his cologne being perfect for his outfit/mood. As a 5 he puts a lot into his appearance and wants to be seen as polished and well put together. I'm so glad you mentioned that point because neither me nor my husband could ever resonate with the common mention that "5s don't care about their appearance". I love your videos Hillary, please keep up the great work, you're doing so well! 👏🏾👍🏾👍🏾

As an MBTI Certified Practitioner trained by the Myers and Briggs Foundation, I can affirm that the MBTI is *not* about behavior. It is about cognitive preferences; that is, how someone processes information and makes decisions, and whether the locus of those cognitive functions are internal or external. For the Enneagram, one's motivations will drive behavior just as one's cognitive preferences will drive behavior - but the system is not *about* behavior. Hope that helps!

I’m a type 5 that is super close to being a 9... so I am a much more “peace keeping” / “agreeable” version of 5 than most descriptions give. I also am always focused on being “polite” so that I don’t spend a lot of energy on unpleasant interactions.

Love love love your energy, warmth and enthusiasm as you share your knowledge about all things enneagram. I consider myself blessed that I found your channel and also that your younger son is my enneagram type 5. I listen to master teachers like Beatrice Young, Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile but I resonate with your presentation style the most. Maybe it’s the energy you bring and the beauty of the warm bright happy room environment. Your channel is classy, intellectual, joyful and comforting all in one. As a type 5, my energy may be drained from the day causing me to feel a bit pessimistic especially after being so aware of my social interaction failings/limitations at work, but my hope is always lifted by your personality. So THANK YOU for pushing forward to create your channel. You make a difference in the world. Thank you again!!

My SIL had me take the test years ago and she thought I was a 1. I think I thought I was a 1, too. But I'm very much a 5 now. She says you don't really change types, but I don't think it is stress for me. I'm a loner. I've always bought books and have my own library. I hate being interrupted. There is never a day when I get enough time alone, including days when I am able to be around no one. I think people are overrated and don't see the point of developing new relationships when I already have more than I can manage. I don't feel like I'm arrogant, but people are intimidated by me. I have a kind of flat affect except around people I know and like. Listening to these possible mistypes makes me think, yeah, I am a 5. I really dislike emotional responses to difficulties that actually NEED analysis and thoughtful attention. I don't know why I thought I was a 1 before other than it was a time of my life when I was very involved in things in my community.

Without knowing you but reading this comment you sound like a 5. Test don't always work. I don't even have my clients take them most of them time. My son (18 years old) took the test years ago and his top 3 were 1, 8, 5...the bottom of those 3 was the type 5. And after reading up on all of them he most definitely was a 5. I have been struggling for quite a long time if I am 4 or 5. I actually thought that I am 4 (4w5). But I started thinking that I may be 5 (5w4) and I found out that I am 5. When I first found out about Enneagram I thought that I'm 9 but I found out that I'm not. So yeah I'm definitely in withdrawn stance. It also helped me when I compared three triads (heart, head and gut). After some time I found out that I am just like 5 but I probably just saw myself as more emotional or calm person that I actually am. Your videos helped me a lot and this video also proved that I really am 5. Now I'm so happy that I found who I really am and thank you.

I'm a 5 and when I was in elementary school my classmates started to be really fascinated in Facebook, Snapchat, they were making the accounts with fake birth dates becouse as I remember clearly you can't have an account until you're 13? Nevermind. I was thinking back then why are they doing this? I told myself that messenger, Facebook and all the other stuff doesn't make any sense until I have my friends phone number and didn't want to make an account even after 13 but somehow the social fomo (heh 5's social fomo heh) got me and I did it. Now I am more open to social media, but still I'm not using them too much.

Thanks Hilary, really informative video. I got a lot from it. Pieces of my puzzle coming together. Also, resonated with your son's experiences (despite being a 57-year-old woman). As a 5w4 I could never be interviewed off the cuff or on a public video, not even for my gorgeous wee mum. That would be an excruciating experience. At the least, I would need 3 months to process and prepare, know all the questions in advance and maybe then I would think about it. xx

After doing a fair bit of research into several types, I'm pretty sure I'm the 1:1 variant of the 5w4. I have a friend who is a type 4 (unsure of their wing or instinctual subtype, but I'd guess 4w5 and either sp or sx). He and I are very similar in many ways, but we approach problems from very different ways, even if we come to the same conclusions. My core motivation definitely lines up a lot more with 5 than 4 and seeing how I get incredibly scattered when I'm tired or stressed... My mom is a type 9 (strong w1) and this pretty much nails the differences. I'm very invested in keeping strong boundaries, good at saying no and overall skeptical and cynical about people, while she struggles with boundaries and saying no and is way more trusting of people than I am.

I don’t resonate with every single thing that I’ve heard or read about type 5’s but then again my self-understanding/awareness could be better. I have to remind myself that we can feel like so many of the other types, except eight, I have never thought I might be an eight. I’ll be watching a video about another type and start thinking, “maybe I was wrong, this really sounds like me”, but then I remember, “oh yeah, that’s what I thought yesterday about another type, which likely means I was right in the first place - I am a nine!” 😂

I think the idea of 3's "caring how they look" has more to do with "how they're percieved as a person". I have a sister who is a 3 and I'm not going to say "she doesn't care about her physical appearance"...I'd say she care's about that at a normal level, but how she is perceived "as a person" is "through the roof". I am a type 5 and I too have a normal level of concern about my outward appearance. Not low but not excessively high either....but my concern over how I'm perceived as a person by others is also "average"....It's far less of a concern for me. Of course I want people to see me accurately, as ANY type appreciates recognition of "who they are", but I would say it's ultimately "more" important to me what I think about myself than how others see me. My 3 sister, not so. Others perception of her is clearly very important to her.

I have the tendencies of a 5 to do so much research on useless things and to actually push down bodily needs, but if I'm tired, I'll normally push through it if I have something I need to explain. On top of that, a lot of the research I do reinforces my beliefs and what is right. So I really don't know right now

Basically the core motivation of type 1 is to do what’s right, so if that’s your core motivation in life and not just in research you might be a curious 1. (Which makes sense cause when someone wants to know how to be their best self, they better research).

I have taken 4 different enneagram tests till now and 2 of them typed me as a 1 and 2 as a type 5.😅 One of those tests was the kind that gives percentages of all the types a person resonates with and according to it my top 3 types are 1, 5, and 3 (1 and 5 about 90%, 3 about 80%). My MBTI type is INTJ and so I searched what enneagram types are INTJs generally identified with and the answers were 5 and 1🤦‍♀️ (more 5 than 1 though). That is when I started observing myself more. Now I am fairly sure that I'm a 5 but I don't know which wing and there are times when I feel like I am a 1. So yeah, quite confused.😂 P.S.- If its important, I'm not available on most of the social media platforms like FB, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. The only platform I use is Instagram and even there its all about the books I'm reading and very little personal stuff.

Curious what you think. I'm either a 5 or an 8. I've been told I'm a smart person who likes learning things, however I've caught onto myself that I tend to learn things for the utility they have. I tend to be more goal oriented than process oriented. I'm an introvert, specifically my MBTI type is INTJ. I have some pathological rebellious tendencies. If someone requests something of me I can become even more opposed to doing it, even if I wanted to do it before. I desire a moderate amount of wealth, to live a relatively minimalist life without too many luxuries, but to have a good enough income that I'm free from having to depend on certain power systems. I desire independence and autonomy. I fear losing my autonomy. I fear being controlled by above, and therefore I'm very sociologically inclined, directing much of my studies to politics and solving political issues. My beliefs compared to most are pretty radical. I will propose ideas that others think are crazy, but through my own calculations, make perfect sense to me. I also have some Four-ish tendencies. I'm protective of my identity, sometimes I feel like I can't stack up to others in the ordinary world due to being so different (both physically and mentally) and this I think contributes to my strong desire to always go against the norms if I am to achieve a good enough living to free myself. Curious what you think I am. I'm either a 5 or an 8, but I feel I've got a strong 4 in my tritype also. As well as that, what's my instinctual variant? If you want to ask more questions because I haven't given enough information, feel free to.

Mentioning tri-types you could be a 6-4- 8 the Truth Teller... or the 5-4-8 would be The Scholar. (Or other combos depending on which triad your first reaction is out of.) Have you taken Katherine Fauvre's newest free test (version 6)? Shows your instinctual stacking as well. ~

Awesome test, I've just finished it. My results were 8,5,4 Self-Preservation - Social, which is pretty accurate to how I felt already. Can self-preservation Eights be confused with other types, like Fives and Sixes? Maybe. I am an introvert, and Eights are usually seen as extroverts? Also I've been told by many people I could be a Six, but in every test I've done, I've never scored a Six, and if it measures all of the types, Six usually finishes about in the middle or slightly lower. I'm struggling to find much information on the Self-Preservation Eight, is it a rare type or something?

@@JourneyLT - I am no expert and have just watched a lot of Fauver's youtube 'hangouts' trying to learn more about it all. Katherine is an 8-7-4 and shares two of the same types with you though she is extroverted. The 8 is protective... is comfortable with anger (VS trying to avoid it or deflect it...)... and so forth. The 8 with the 4 will be a much different 8 than another combo of 8 would be. Not in a bad way - but perhaps a bit less edgy... more softer. The 8 -3-6 combo is most intense -the 3 moving outward ( All my own opinion here...) www.katherinefauvre.com/blog/tag-468-title-00-introverted-sx-8w9-with-the-846-tritype Yes - you can be an introverted 8 in my opinion. The 6 thing pops up a lot because it is commonly a hard one to type and a lot of people are a 6 think they are another type. (Your interest in politics just sounded like a 6 word/ cause to me... each type uses the same kinds of word choices according to Fauvre's research.) Your tritype of 8-5-4 in a self- pres first will look different than the same combo in a SO or SX. Kinda confusing, but we are all so uniquely wired. Also leading with the 8 would look different than the lead with a 5 or 4 would look like, but overall the same characteristics would be present. Then just to add even more to the whole wonderful puzzle - sometimes you will use your wings (perhaps the 7 ) and that shows up as another side of you at times. Hope this helped a bit ~ I listen to Fauver's youtube 'hangouts' with advanced class attendees from around the world... and glean a lot.

I would love to see a video that can somehow get the MBTI and Enneagram together. I'm a five and I knew it since the first time I saw my possible results. In the MBTI I'm an ISTP. I wonder what's your son's MBTI :) I'm curious

I am a 5 and ISTJ. I used to be INTJ but since having a kid and becoming a MS teacher I became an ISTJ pretty consistently.

Dude, someone needs to watch Bambi and learn some life lessons from Thumper. Ms. Hillary, you were very gracious in your response! As a 5 I am probably gonna sit around and process how I feel about such a douchey comment for awhile. Thanks for your videos and sharing your knowledge!!
