What I did with similar trees is soak them in thinned PVA glue. (Fill a jar with 1:1 white glue and water with some drops of dishwasher rinse aid to encourage flow. Mix well. Yes you want a big jug of glue to do this.) Submerge the trees and let them absorb the glue mixture. Pull out (yes messy) and let dry overnight. They'll be rock hard and stop dropping foliage.

winter trees are not even worth it! at many stores for cristmax they have so many choices all you need to do is over spray them with winter primer

I've actually found a cheap and easy way to get some evergreens if you're when christmas stuff is in the stores. Dollar Tree and several others have some very basic bottle brush trees, they start out being not so good, but with the non-green ones, you can essentially make a heavier black paint/ink wash to cover the metallic/white color, and let that dry overnight, then with them and their green ones, well, get a thing of mod podge and a larger, cheaper brush and just brush it into the tree before rolling it and pushing in some fine flock. Let them dry before clipping off the included base and attach to a base you want, they're low enough that you don't need to do more than drill a small hole or even a divot and use a bit of gel superglue or hot glue to attach them. I Just used some plywood rounds I found at walmart that were 6 to a pack, and had based them up with, first some of the dollar tree pre-mixed patching compound, then some sand and rocks before painting, then attaching the trees and they work really well.

The super glue/baking soda combo wasn't in vain. Those texture pastes tend to shrink a bit when they dry, and your pre-mix gave the bases a nice natural slope, rather than a more abrupt change in height the naked paste alone would likely have created. You done good!

One thing you *could* do with the Elmer's spray glue is use it to attach some more flocking on to the tree itself so you get the hardness as well as using its adhesive properties to enhance the look of the tree itself. Then spray *that* with Mod Podge to lock in the additional flocking. I imagine it would be durable as heck at that point and even more customized.

i wonder if you sprayed modpodge over the elmers if it would clear it up. the only reason i mention this is that sometimes you'll have a problem with cloudy lacquer on a tabletop mini to fix it you just put on another coat and it will be clear. that way you'd get the strength of the elmers without the cloudiness- if it worked.

Great video! This is how I "made" trees for my game. The pre-made model trees look good, and don't cost that much (I got 30 trees for $11 on Amazon). All I had to do to get them ready was make base for them and then sprayed them with varnish. I do like that Mod Podge spray you used, I'll definitely have to get some.

That Elmer's is a spray adhesive meant more for gluing two things together. It's essentially spray-on glue. You can experiment spraying a base with it and then sprinkling some ground cover or flocking. I've ever only used it for mounting images onto an art board tho'.

Hey Garman! I like your trees although my favorite way is the twisted wire approach. I cover them with hot glue to simulate bark and then paint them. Say "Hi!" to Conner! LOL.

So I got my chipboard out of the packaging a piece of furniture came in. But I just checked and if you search ‘heavyweight chipboard’ in google it gives you buying options and they all look comparable to what I use!

Ok, using sprays is the wrong approach. That stuff is mainly going to sit on the top of the foam and not penetrate to the bottom. What you want to do is to soak the foam with some isopropyl alcohol with a pipette, then on top of that soak it in a 50/50 mix of water and matt modpodge. The Iso will reduce the surface tension and suck the glue right down through the whole foam. It'll dry rock hard.

if you spray the trees with isopropanol alchohol you should get much better penetration with the mod podge which will make them more durable :)
