Enhanced Sound on NES Classic Edition / Castlevania 3 Comparison

Subscribe! goo.gl/BuAo7j
A few games used enhanced sound like Gimmick, Langrige Point on Famicom and more, but you can hear the difference in Castevania 3. If you loved the Castevania 3 soundtrack as I did, hear what we missed out on in the Famicom version - and now experience it when you load it up on your NES Classic Edition.

  • @gabnrami

    @gabnrami

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes the chip can be emulated and also the nes can reproduce the same audio.. the hardware is the same, the problem back then was that the nes has 72pin vs the famicom 60pin, And in the us nes the pins are not fully bridged so its not possible for the console to read the audio of the cartidge unless you simple mod the console with one or two cables

    Unfortunately, Nintendo's emulator on the NES Classic doesn't support Famicom ROMs after testing with a Hackchi-cracked NES Mini. However, when installing an external emulator such as RetroArch, it works quite fine. I've been playing Akumajou Densetsu on RetroArch through the NES Classic for a few years now and every time I return it's a blast

    I found a site a while back where somebody figured out how to build a version of the game that can actually use those extra sound channels on a standard NES toaster. It involved attaching a cable to the cart with a herm plug that goes in to the audio out port, and then hooking the NES up using AV cables.

    If you don't exactly know, VRC6 adds 3 sound channels (2 square and 1 sawtooth). The NES and Famicom without any audio expansion have 5 channels: 2 square, 1 triangle, 1 noise and 1 DPCM (which plays samples, but was rarely used because samples take up a lot of space).

    Agreed. The problem i have is that they change the bassline to a "saw" pattern instead of the smoother "sine" pattern causing quite a large difference. They could have enhanced it without actually changing the type of instrument used. That would have been much better. It's ofc noticable that the enhanced has better audio but better audio is not the same as a better mix.

  • @ElysaraCh

    @@TommieHansen the sawtooth wave sounds absolutely bonkers good when used right, the real problem is that the production VRC6 chips had a bug that doubled the volume of the sawtooth, causing the bass to overpower the rest of the music a little bit.

    I always accepted the nes version untill i discovered the famicom version, i was sooo shocked about it’s warmer sound, i couldn’t believe that i liked the nes version, it comparion, the nes version sounds very rawish ,so rawisch in fact that it will make you believe as if 1990 was an rawisch age, Now what if nintendo had kept the ext sound pins in the nes,would they had allowed konomi to put their vrc6 chip over to the western version or would konami still have been forced to use the mmc5 chip and still had to alter those tunes for mmc5 chip with different extra soundchannels to make it sound different for the western version , We can only speculate, sure nintendo could,ve make a expansion module for supported nes games to utelize those ext soundpins that way,but sadly they never did,DAMNIT.

    Well, while Famicom SOUNDS better, NES is very, VERY clear. When you use headphones to listen to Famicom version, it's an earrape, because sometimes the bass of VRC6 overpowers the melodies and other great details, it starts to sound annoyingly buzzy. NES, on the other hand, is clear, crisp and godDAMN that arpeggio in Rising!

    I agree with the sentiment that the Famicom sound chip is better than the NES sound chip, however sometimes simplicity is the best course. I like the NES version better. More is not always better. For instance, the Sony sound chip in the SNES was WAY better than the sound chip in the Megadrive (Sega Genesis,) however there were a few games (VERY few) where the sound was actually better on the Genesis versions.
