Though, in my personal non-expert opinion, I would expect the results could be more in line with the IHPS. After all, that is a combination of PE and carbon fiber which is basically the same concept as using Kevlar and PE. You use PE to help stop stronger projectiles and the kevlar/carbon fiber for rigidity to reduce deformation. Maybe some application of the concept could work, but it seemingly didn't for the IHPS.

More then likely these are probably just bad tests, not having a representative head or dummy backing armor is know to produces exaggerated deformation, the claims that those bulges are definitively fatal also seem to be based on him basically just eyeballing them and arbitrarily declaring such which doesn't inspire a ton of confidence in me. Like he doesn't have a shred of data about energy transfer in terms of acceleration or acutal deformation of a representative dummy skull at all. He's literally just looking at a dent and going "eh yeah that would probably kill a dude" Personally I'm gonna take the real world cases of dudes getting shot in the head with rifles and walking it off with a rung bell and extensive professional testing over some random backyard test on youtube where a guy vaguely declares bulges produced in an suspect test as 'fatal'.

I think the same rationale as for tank armour goes for personal ballistic armour like vests, plates & helmets. Know their limits and act accordingly. If the helmet & plates can stop even a rifle round at say 100 metres distance be careful and neutralise the threat before closing that distance. I liked the russian / soviet military tests as they tested from several different distances as well.

I'm still gonna rock the IHPS at the range when those on the line are looking a little froggy. Maybe I'll get given an ECH some day. It's worth noting that the literature that came with the IHPS really cared about pad placement in the helmet and how many you had in it. I found the IHPS specific pads to be larger than ACH counterparts and a given helmet size to fit tighter than its ACH counterpart.

one thing that I've come to understand that sure the Kevlar helmets may show less deformation, that doesn't mean that energy wasn't transferred to the skull. This understanding came from me watching Ulbricht helmet test with Kevlar helmets vs their titanium hybrid helmets and they had soft head dummies to demonstrate the deformation of the energy that would transfer to the head. So poly helmets just look worse to me over a Kevlar but I still would want to wear a Kevlar helmet over a metal helmet, but in the I just rock a bump

I wonder... why we don't see more composite solutions like kevlar and polyurethane maybe even with some ceramic inserts to prevent excessive deformation around front & back of the head at least. Obvious issue is weight i guess. But then again, maybe some light and flexible support that could brace helmet somewhere below neck when worn could be made. Soo many possibilities... but doesn't seem like there's much interest in that.

You can shoot some types of cutting boards and find out yourself aha. Short answer is no, the heat & pressure bonding of UHMWPE textile fibers is what makes it able to stop rounds and fragments. You are ripping those layers apart with the projectile. Bonding those layers sufficiently for helmet shapes has been a huge manufacturing hurdle, and plates have been easier to manufacture.

Odd question, would a Kevlar, Poly aramid work better then just normal Kevlar or just normal polyethylene? Similar to the classic Russian chonk helmets with titanium then Kevlar. With polyethylene on the outside for protection against steel core then the inner layer Kevlar for more rigidity?

You can actually see the ECH uses a little bit of kevlar and carbon fiber in the mix as well for exactly what you're thinking. A more combined weave might help but I'm not sure

Yes it does work better, israeli infantry uses revision helmets with polyethylene between kevlar on the inside and outside, and in june a soldier got hit in the helmet (with most likely 9mm from submachine gun), and there was allmost no deformation and the bullet was stoped.

Exactly what I was thinking. I did a high cut conversion for my personal ECH. Bought longer screws. Got plenty of 3x6x1/8 inch 303 Stainless Steel plates. Plan is to bend and weld, going all the way around the helmet to help with rigidity, as well as reduce the amount of BFD and hopefully increase the protection at least slightly.

My only thing with these videos is that the rounds a fired within 10-25 meters of the Armor, dependent on rifle vs pistol round. Those distances are unrealistic for what the armor is intended to do. I mean a 9mm NATO is going to lose around 100 FPS at 50 yards. Thats not considering other internal or external ballistic factors like barrel length and twist, barometric pressure, or wind. I mean a .44Mag is gonna lose 200fps from 6” barrel to a 4” barrel. The round cannot be the only consideration. I recommend you standardize your scientific process and eliminate as many external factors as possible. You could standardize distances to more common engagement ranges like 25-50 meters for pistol rounds and 100-200 meter for rifle rounds. I also recommend you provide external and terminal ballistic information such as weather and date if manufacture of the armor, as ballistic fabrics, ceramics, and some cheaper steel armors (🇷🇺👀) will loose protective factors over time.

What is more standard than a 9mm NATO round? In a general sense I hit all of my helmets with a basic round, an AP round, and a high energy round. It has been pretty consistent unless you want to split hairs. You learn a lot from each hit even without a strict standard. We can already make accurate comparisons between helmet's and armor's ballistic strengths based on the composition of the round it was able to stop at close distances. Armor losing ballistic protection over time is largely a myth, I've tested metal, ceramic, and kevlar armor in excess of 40 years old with results consistent to their original standard. Please give me a specific realistic hit scenario that cannot be resolved because of the way I tested things. I bet I can tell you how it would go based on existing tests I've done.

@@Oxide_does_his_best I apologize if that came off as hostile or condescending in anyway. I am only trying to provide a suggestion that would bring more credibility to you claims, I don’t disagree with or doubt the findings or you claims. You have already emplaced a good number of controls already. I am only suggesting you add a few more standardized ones like a more normalized engagement distance (i.e. 25 meters for pistol rounds and 150 meters for intermediate rifle rounds), this would do two things, further legitimize your findings and allow you viewers to see the terminal effects from an expected engagement distance where rounds will have lost some of their energy upon impact. The close in tests can still be done, but rather than use so many rounds from that close distance you could enhance your videos this way. On a final note, I have no issues with the rounds or guns you use they are definitely meeting the standardization mark.

@@Rebelsteve5 Do not apologize, I have been eagerly awaiting this discussion. Terminal effects can be found from lighter loads or subsonic ammo usually without actually shooting at range. There usually hasn't been a need to do this except in very specific instances. A realistic engagement test is really not useful when most body armor can stop hits at very close ranges anyway with deformation not being much of a factor. What is realistic anyway? Crime statistics suggest most firefights happen within 20 feet. However, I do consider making hits at range like you suggest (or with light loads) but I need an actual reason first. One case is with helmets and armor that deforms poorly yet still stops the round. But if it already deforms poorly from a close hit I think it isn't up to my own personal standard. To shoot again at range is to simply find the more exact margins. This can probably be found to a degree by dividing the deformation measurement by FPS though :D
