Engraving a Sword Blade with Ilya - Part1
Ilya takes us through step by step of how he engraves a dragon on a custom damascus great sword. Engraving steel takes special steps. This is a series of videos showing engraving for beginners all the way to advanced as the videos progress.
First Ilya shows us the bloom steel katana that he made last year with a carved / engraved dragon horimono on the blade and a beautiful hamon.
Ilya breaks down each step as he works. Shows us how to generate an original sketch for engraving and how to transfer that sketch to the blade. He then shows us how he starts engraving the design on the blade and starts removing material.
We also go into detail showing the tools that he uses to engrave. Starting with the huge engravers ball that he made and how it works. He then shows the hammers that you will need and a few different styles of chisels themselves.

I have one question (First of all, sorry for my bad english, it isn't my first language): How much would cost, a sword like this, with this kind of engravings? (I know that kind of work, is much time consuming, etc. and i know i don't have the money to buy it, but is for curiosity how much a sword like this would cost.)

You say you don't wanna be pigeonholed as the katana guy, but I wouldn't worry. If there's anything you've shown us over the years, it's that you're capable of crafting just about anything like a master.

Whenever someone asks you what mastery of a craft looks like, don't speak a single word. Simply direct them to this video and allow it to do the talking. Simply gorgeous.
I'm pretty sure I learnt more about art and composition from Ilya in this video, than I learnt during my entire art degree.
personally, your work should be display in a museum.
I have been watching Smiths work for years, but hands down, this is the best video I've seen. The content on here shows not just how awe-some the product is (yes- I did :D ), but the intimacy of the tutorial aspect shows how legit hard it is. Thank you, and whatever happens, you have a dedicated fan.
This quality of work actually brings a tear to my eye...
Ilya is an amazing artist! And honours the traditional skills of the past Wow just wow! 😱👍🏻👍🏻

This is a Masterclass in 5 different subjects alltogether. I'm impressed by his ability and knowledge. Outstanding.
Ilya's talent is absolutely mind bending. Kings would start wars in the medieval days to make him part of their retinue I'm sure.

Ilya He is a king and the symbol on his leather bag is a mark or something very important
Aside from the amazing sword engraving... I’ve noticed how Ilya and even Matt almost always wear at least one anime related shirt in their videos in Man at Arms and now I’ve noticed it here. I think it’s so adorable how many shirts they must have and how they wear them often.
The amount of specialized skill displayed in theses videos is simply insane
Knowing how much Ilya values philosophy and tradition of the arts, it's no wonder that his handwriting is beautiful. I began my interest in blacksmithing via calligraphy, and as he's stated in a few videos, the sword and the pen (or brush) are very similar in their artistic philosophy. I'm more familiar with it as it pertains to Eastern calligraphy, but I can easily see through his process how it translates to Western penmanship, the manuscript, and physical religious text. It's always a pleasure to see Ilya work and talk through his process in this way and see how several crafts intertwine.
Ilya is a god.. at such a young age too! Hope he gets into teaching at some point cause he'd probably have so much to give.
Ilya is just amazing! One of the best Smiths and Craftsmen I've seen so far. Can't wait 'till I save up enough money for a Sword of my own :)

In art school, my professor would have us use the photo copier to reduce drawn prints because they had auto size reduction. Might help speed up your process. Thank you for keeping the integrity of the original art process, though.
Ilya, I'd LOVE to see a video detailing how you made that katana and what is unique and special about it.
That might be the coolest vice I've ever seen.
Шедевральные клинки! Илья красавчик!
I just can't express with words how mindblowing this project is. This is not a sword you're making, it's a monument.
Why is your hand writing so good?
This is the BEST video this channel has produced. SIMPLE. AS. THAT.
Best channel ever. EVER.
Man, didn't know Ilya was this versed in visual art as well, what a legend.
Me being Russian and knowing the language, I was going "Now, wait a minute here?" when Ilya was writing the alphabet, but then he wrote the explanation right after. :D
Ilya 1) has lovely handwriting; 2) does first-draft translations of his sketch to the scaled-down version with fucking sharpie like a big-balled Russian. Taking "I do my crosswords in pen" confidence to the next level.

@@michaelsauls1142 Alec visited his parents over Easter back in the UK, kinda hard to make videos while visiting family I imagine. Then he went on a gemstone setting course in... Tx? Before getting back to Montana. It's not so much that Will has been doing all the work, more that Alec has had some time off and working away from the camera...
“Katana? What’s that !? “My thought when you pulled out that sword. Holy shit man. Talk about a sword for an emperor. You need to consecrate it in virgins blood.... and hide it so “the one” can find it and wield its heavenly power!!
Real and relaxed Ilya is best... Ilya. I feel that he doesn't appear completely comfortable in front of the camera. He seems so stiff when he is dictating what he is doing or trying to edumacate us as if he is trying to put on a persona or reading off a teleprompter. When he is in his own element, relaxed and smiling, that is when he truly shines. It is rare on camera, but I do enjoy seeing it and hearing it. Keep up the good work Ilya.
I always knew these were difficult. However, seeing the process in more detail has given me a deeper appreciation of how much work is involved.

That is the amazing thing because it is hard to find more detailed videos, most of them are just a timelapses which looks nice but ignore a significant part of the process of creation for a viewer, that is why I'm so glad they've released a video like that :)
Watching him work is so mezmorizing, haha. A master craftsman by any definition.
good thing you guys focused on the intricate details on the blade😊
Ilya, your hand engraving is probably the best I have ever seen. Good on you.
What I see, an artist in his element free from the care of judgment of others but himself. I envy you.
Damn, Ilya has some clean penmanship, in addition to his masterful engravings...I never thought about using a grid to basically plot the points and then play connect the dots.
