I am a Dutchman living in the USA. In our American-English language there are quite a lot of Dutch loan words dating back to the New Netherlands in the 17th century. Some examples: "Dollar", from "(rijks)daalder"; Cookie, from "koekje", or, "coleslaw" from "kool sla"... etc.

It works both ways. English uses loan words from Dutch like "cookie - koekje" and "iceberg - ijsberg"

Als er over het "Nederlands" gepraat wordt in dit soort topics, om maar eens een leenwoord te gebruiken, denkt men meestal alleen aan Nederland en Nederlanders. Maar goed, toen ik als Vlaming op de lagere school zat (jaren '60), moesten we regenscherm (parapluie) of zonnescherm (parasol) gebruiken. Wat Franstaligen "douche" noemden, mochten wij absoluut niet, het moest stortbad zijn en dat werd ons ingepeperd. Tot mijn grote verbazing merk ik dat Nederlanders dit soort leenwoorden, (de lijst is groter dan de gegeven voorbeelden), wel massaal gebruiken en het zelfs raar of grappig vinden als wij (Vlamingen) de ons ingepeperde Nederlandse alternatieven gebruiken.

Tsja, de Vlamingen hebben voor hun taal moeten vechten. Ons werd respect voor de taal aangeleerd.

I would suggest you look into the word "bolwerk", a Dutch word that was loaned into French as "boulevard"and then loaned back into Dutch and other languages.

That's interesting - I wasn't aware of the Dutch etymology and had never associated "boulevard" with the English cognate "bulwark"

I'm Indonesian and when i was in Netherlands i mostly caught "Nasi" as common foreign vocabulary which Dutch people call rice. But here in Java people adopted "brug" as "bridge" and some other Dutch words because of our past history. It's nice trying to understand Dutch language while my third foreign language is german. I understand little bit of Dutch because it's ya ok bit similar with german. Groetjes uit Indonesia

Although English is considered a Germanic language, its content of words of purely Germanic origin has dropped to 25% since Old English times The Norman invasion of 1066 affected English greatly. There are often 2 words for the same concept. 1 from Germanic Old English, the other from French. Freedom/ liberty kingly/royal, handy/manual, earthly/terrestial, cook/chef, height/altitude , right handed/dexterous etc. A number of Dutch words were taken into English during the Golden Age especially about painting and maritime dingtjes; easel, landscape, still life, sail freight, mast , boom , keelhaul I find language so interesting. what's interesting is, french loanwords in english sound more formal than their native english counterparts. whereas english loanwords in (for instance) french or german sound informal, and the native words in those languages sound formal.

The overall English vocabulary might only be 25% germanic, but if you consider the most commonly used words it's somewhat higher. And yes, the dichotomy of nuances between words of germanic origin and those from French can be quite interesting.

Flemish is a dialect from Dutch and not a language though.. but its fun to learn 😅

@janaaj1an889 You can opt for softer versions of guttural Dutch sounds that match the German counterparts. For example you don't have to pronounce a hard g. Just listen to how Jeroen pronounces his guttural sounds. They're extremely reduced, especially the g. It's even lighter than the German version. It almost even sounds like an English g at times (g in 'give' for instance).

Laat ik beginnen met te zeggen dat ik mezelf geen uitgesproken taalpurist vind, maar waarom we sommige Engelse woorden in het Nederlands gebruiken snap ik echt niet. Een voorbeeld. Creditcard. Landen om ons heen zeggen carte de Crédit Kreditkarte enz. Wij zeggen creditcard in plaats van kredietkaart terwijl het precies hetzelfde betekent. Schiet mij maar lek,hoor! Verder vind ik dat de jeugd erg veel Engels gebruikt. "Je moet mij niet judgen" Judgen! Ja, taal verandert maar oh, wat vind ik dit lelijk! (Ik hoop dat ik geen taalfouten heb gemaakt) 😄

ik erger mij dood aan overbodig gebruik van Engelse woorden terwijl er gewoon een Nederlands woord voor bestaat. Wanneer je je eigen taal niet spreekt ben je gewoon dom. Ik ben overigens net als jij geen taalpurist, maar ik krijg er spontaan jeuk van.

Credit card is nu eenmaal het woord, kredietkaart is Vlaams. Veel woorden, ziin gewoon overgenomen uit het Amerikaans Engels, die woorden zijn er immers al. Die Nederlandse woorden, komen vaak later pas omdat sommigen perse een Nederlandse variant willen, echter de Amerikaanse versie is al standaard, dan is het onzin om opeens een Nederlandse versie te gaan hanteren. Van Nederlandse woorden die opeens Engels talig worden door invloed uit Amerikaanse media, is ook niet vreemd. Ondanks dat veel (dus niet alle) scholen Brits Engels proberen aan te leren, is de massa media Amerikaans, dus veel Engelstalige leenwoorden zijn gewoon Amerikaans en normaal in Nederland.

@@xXTheoLinuxXx Als het standaard woord, het internationale woord is, in het dagelijks taalgebruik, als iemand dan perse een Nederlands woord wil gebruiken, komt deze persoon nogal vreemd over. Daar het Nederlandse woord niet de standaard is.

@@dutchgamer842 waar ik op doel zijn de Nederlandse woorden die al in gebruik waren. Ik bedoel als voorbeeld een afdeling 'Onderzoek en Ontwikkeling' tegenwoordig is dat 'Research and Development'. Of het woord 'matchen' wat was er mis met passen? Ieder zijn mening, begrijp mij goed. Maar men kan naar mijn idee ook doorslaan.

My native language is English and I speak German fluently. I cannot stand having a conversation with people in German who overuse English words. Like, I get it that languages borrow but sometimes Germans exaggerate it big time to the point that it just sounds silly. "In general finde ich das bad" ... I heard someone say that just the other day. It makes me cringe lol

Agreed. It's not just individual words. Germans will sometimes even just randomly say one sentence in the middle of a conversation (with other native German speakers!) in English before switching back. It's so strange.

Same is happening in Afrikaans which is a beautiful expressive language. Such a pity!

On the other hand, my native language (Indonesian) uses a lot of Dutch loanwords, and that ease for me to learn the Dutch language 😉

Kulkas, kantor pos, etc. Papiamentu of the ABC islands has a lot of Dutch loanwords too. 🙂

Ook interessant te weten dat er wat leenwoorden uit het basks (Euskara) komen. Voornamelijk uit de walvisvaart in de 17e eeuw. Denk aan harpoen (arpoi) en sloep (txalupa).

At 11:10 the young lady is saying that native Dutch words should be used in lieu [😊] of loan words...but isn't "precies" a loan word? Maybe "zeker" instead?

We English have taken "Schadenfreude" from German. It means to take joy from someone else's misfortune. It is in The Oxford English Dictionary.

In English there is no equivalent word for 'Schadenfreude' so it's sometimes useful to have a foreign substitute.

Het woord voor beurs in Russisch is ook een leenwoord uit het Nederlands maar het is moeilijk te erkennen. Het uitspraak is ungefähr "birja". In het Russisch zijn er veel leenwoorden uit het Nederlands. De paraplu is in het Russisch "zontik" van het Nederalandse "zonnedoek". "yunga" van "jonge" in de betekenis "scheepsjongen". schipper -> "shkiper". vlag is gebruikt met hetzelfe uitspraak. "haven" -> "gavan'". Meest van de woorden waren in het begin van 18 eeuw geleend. Dit is natuurlijk in verband met hoogste prestige van Nederland in het zeilen. Ik denk dat leenwoorden zijn geweldig. Die maken talen rijker en makkelijker te begrijpen. Er zijn veel concepten in het Nederlandse taal die andere talen lenen kunnen. En natuurlijk vice versa. Het aantal van woorden uit Latijn en Griekse taal zullen wij ook niet vergeten. Dat is ook het basis van veel algemene vocabulaire.

Ik ben Braziliëen en ik studeer nederlands alleen bij thuis en vind ik dat nederlands is veel harder dan Engels om te leren omdat nederlands heeft zoveel vreemde woorden die moeilijk te onthouden zijn

Re. expliqueren vs. uitleggen, I love literal translations of Dutch into English, "Let me lay it out for you" sounds so folksy. Almost as good as "handy" for convenient.

Grieks, (Auto, visie, chronisch ) latijn, kaar, kelder. zolder vijver) , Keltisch, ( bek, kar, biels). Maleis (pakkie aan deftig). Arabisch, (Algebra, admiraal).

Ik kom uit Brabant officieel en daar zitten best wel wat Franse invloeden. Ik denk daar bij de ouderen generatie meer Frans en Duits dan Engels. De nieuwe generatie meer Engels en minder Duits. Mijn oma en mijn vader zei dat zij meer Duitse TV keken. Ik kijk alles in het Engels en Engelstalige muziek en je chat met mensen online die vaak ook Engels typen.

Als er 'n Nederlands woord voor is, waarom zou je dat dan niet gebruiken? bv Woordenschat voor vocabulaire of Spraakkunst voor grammatica

I've always wondered why this happens so much, especially considering that Dutch, of all languages, excels at word creation. Lazyness or not cool enough?

The title of the video would be more 'loanwords " in Dutch. Not only about English, Dutch has more loanwords from French, and is historically closer to the English language.

As long as languages exist they change. The Dutch that we speak today barley sounds like the Dutch we spoke 500 years ago. And the dutch that we will speak 500 years in the future will barley sound like how it sounds today. That's just how it is and in my opinion it's only super interesting. I don't have any problems with it. Oh, and it kind of disturbed me that you didn't mention that we also have a ton of loanwords from Yiddish and Hebrew. And since the last 1 or 2 decades you increasingly hear words from Arabic, Turkish and Sranantongo. Although now this is mainly used by youngsters, it'll be only a matter of time to become common for all people.

@@EasyDutch Ach, das wusste ich nicht. Wobei, man kann auch sagen, dass wir es übersetzt haben. Beispiel: Oogmerk > Augenmerk Aber wenn man die Sprachen vergleicht, klingen einige Wörter wie aus dem Hochdeutschen. Oder eben aus dem Niederdeutschen. Tatsächlich habe man damals die Gemeinsamkeiten beider Sprachen nicht erkannt, als man sich mit dem Niederländischen beschäftigte. Erst viel später fand man Gemeinsamkeiten, aber da war es vermutlich schon zu spät. Auch die beiden Kriege bzw. die Politik gewisser Politiker werden dazu beigetragen haben 🤔 naja, es is wie es is. Man macht sich ja auch heute keine Gedanken mehr, woher das eine oder andere Wort stammt. Mir viel auf, dass man heute ein englisches Wort falsch benutzt, obwohl damit ja was anderes gemeint ist: Leak. Beispiel: ich leake ein Bild in Zugtoilette (kein Scherz, das haben einige Menschen getan). Ich meine mich zu erinnern, dass mit Leak Leck gemeint ist, also wenn etwas leckt oder speziell auch wenn Informationen durchsickern, also ein Leck im System ist. Witzig, die Engländer usw. haben licking und Leak, wir haben... lecken und Leck. Naja, die jungen Leute wissen, was damit gemeint ist. Sprache ist ja nix statisches, was heute noch diese oder jene Bedeutung hat, kann morgen wieder etwas anderes bedeuten 😅

Ik haat het, als ik zeg downloaden zeg ik gewoon ophalen.. weg met het engelse woorden in het nederlandse woordenschat, frans mag blijven :)

Maar goed, het woord mobiel op zich is ook een leenwoord uit het Engels. En alle andere synonimen voor telefoon ook. Smartphone, Telefoon (Telephone), GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), Mobiel (Mobile).. Het is allemaal afkomstig uit het Engels.

Toen de smartphone net uitkwam noemde praktisch iedereen hem zo. Later werd het mobiel(tje) en gewoon telefoon,ook omdat vaste lijnen steeds meer verdwijnen.

Veel voorbeelden daarvan zijn straattaal en buiten de randstad onbekend.

Nederland is multicultureel omdat er een binnenvalling is. ik woon in Australië, wij zijn multicultureel. Nederland zal geen multiculturele land moeten zijn. zometeen is er geen Nederlandse volk meer, sorry als mijn Nederlands slecht is, ik ben in Australië opgegroeid met Nederlandse ouders.

De hele wereld zit vol met het Nederlandse volks. En gezien Nederlanders zich nergens echt aanpassen ben ik niet heel bang dat het volk uit zal sterven, En als dat wel gebeurd, SO BE IT. Afrikaans also has a lot of English influences. One isn't better than the other. Dutch is my native language that I love and Afrikaans is a language that I have fallen in love with. Alleen maar liefde.

Dat is afhankelijk van waar je opgroeit. In de grote steden in het westen gooien ze werkelijkwaar alle talen doorelkaar, daarom versta ik als niet randstedeling niets van straattaal. In Amsterdam kun je vaak niet in het Nederlands bestellen. Maar des te verder je uit de grote steden blijft des te Nederlandser wordt er gesproken, tot je de Franse of Duitse taalgrens Nadert. Daarom is Zuid-Limburgs zo moeilijk voor mensen die er niet vandaan komen. Het is een mengelmoes van Frans, Duits, Nederlands en wat ze verder zelf nog verzonnen hebben. (Ik snap er ook vrij weinig van.) Zelf gebruik ik zeker voor mijn leeftijd zeer weinig Engelse leenwoorden. Waarom zou ik ook? Ik doe een agrarische opleiding en die boeren verstaan toch niet veel Engels. Bovendien is Nederlandser Nederlands vaak netter en dat vind ik belangrijk. Ik kijk dit soort filmpjes alleen voor de gein.😂
