Soy un inglés que vive en España. ¡Creo que no es fácil generalizar a los españoles, ni a los británicos! Siempre he encontrado que la gente de España es muy amigable, y también siempre me ha fascinado la vida sociable / exterior y la honestidad en el habla. Sé un poco sobre el sur (Andalucia) y el norte (el camino de Santiago), y he vivido en el País Vasco y Cataluña. Pero, es como en Inglaterra / Reino Unido, cada persona tiene una visión de la gente de otros países, influenciada, generalmente, por la prensa, por estar de vacaciones o por series de televisión. Es triste, porque mucho de los británicos y españoles son bastante similares, culturalmente y, en mi opinión, lo mejor sería que se diera más educación sociocultural entre los dos países, y en todos los países, pues, espero que se pierdan los estereotipos, lentamente. *Gracias por el video, muy bien como normal!

What's it like living in spain? I have 2 kids and would love to move to Spain but I don't have enough money I don't think.

I have spent considerable time in both countries and can say that I love both countries and had good interactions with people in both. Cheers from the USA!

Brits don't tend to acquaint Barcelona as much as other parts of Spain.

I'm British but I moved to southern Spain last year. I think the Spanish are friendly people who are willing to have a good conversation. They're always grateful for people trying to learn their language, even if you make a lot of mistakes

Lo que me parece curioso e interesante es que no se use el nombre de Andalucía como sustitutivo del término geográfico "southern Spain". Me llama la atención que, al contrario que otras regiones europeas como Bretaña o Flandes o Aquitania se les de el nombre correspondiente y se les identifique y, sin embargo, Andalucía se queda con el genérico término geográfico de "sur de España" ¿por qué sucederá esto?

I am an American and I love the British. They are so goofy and always laughing about something. They seem to keep everything interesting. Spanish accents sound nice because of how loud and cheerful they are but the British accents are just plain funny in my opinion. :)

The Brits certainly have a reputation of getting drunk and not speaking any foreign languages, but things are starting to change, with spanish becoming more popular in the UK and the culture of alcohol not being as important with the newer generation. I find the Spanish more direct, outgoing and easier to engage with than the Brits. It can be difficult to make friends in England as the Brits can be quite reserved and as they settle in to relationships especially, they often become far less sociable and stop going out. I find this occurs far less with Spanish people who retain their social lives throughout their lives no matter what. Also, the poor weather in England has a big impact on our moods.

Cómo la gente dicen en este video, somos muy simpáticos y educadas pero pienso que podríamos ser más sincero y abierto como los españoles. Es verdad que cada país tiene su cultura y manera de ser, pero en mi experiencia me siento más cómodo y como yo mismo cuándo estoy con los españoles. He pasado mucho tiempo con mi novia (quíen es de Andalucía) y su familia y he visto que son muy cercanos. No tienen muchas discusiones o problemas porque comparten y dicen lo que piensan sabiendo que no serán juzgados con demasiada dureza. Culturalmente somos muy similares a los españoles porque nos gusta beber y disfrutar la vida social. No sé si soy solo yo pero después de aprender el idioma y la cultura de otro país, a menudo lo prefiero al mío. ¿Alguien más piensa o siente esto? Finalmente, gracias por el video! Soy inglés y al menudo prefiero estar cerca de los españoles / latinos por los mismos razones. Los ingleses pueden ser muy reservados y cerrados y puede ser difícil que encontrase gente nueva de Inglaterra porque eso.

Puede ser que tienes este opinión porque has vivido en España como adulto y has estado muy independiente, capable de hacer lo que tú quieras. Pero cuando piensas de Inglaterra, piensas de padres, de reglas, de hacer lo que quieran tu familia. Es como cuando alguien empieza la universidad, a veces dicen que “Manchester (por ejemplo) es un lugar mucho más mejor que donde crecí”, y quizás es verdad, pero hay una influencia de lo que he dicho.

This episode was a revelation for me in the way that when they interviewed the Brits I was trying to read the subtitles in Spanish below & they were appearing & disappearing as fast, if not faster, amazingly, than when it’s the other way round. This video slightly put paid to the common assumption that to British ears the Spanish are rattling along 100mph faster than us when we speak our respective native languages. Spanish is the second fastest language after Japanese. It’s because each Spanish word packs more syllables on average than most other languages - especially when compared to English. However, because human communication has a natural cadence and pace which requires for things to be said within a given time frame, it means that Spaniards and Japanese have to pack their longer words into the same time as those saying the same thing in English using shorter words. That’s why Spanish sounds fast…because it has to be.

Yo he vivido en Birmingham durante 4 meses y puedo decir que realmente, los británicos no son tan diferentes a los españoles, si es verdad que son muy educados e intentan ser siempre correctos y te ayudan si tienes algún problema pero a su vez son muy cerrados en el sentido de que no es fácil hacer amigos.

es parecido en Arabia Saudí, la gente es muy ayudable, si estás en una gasolinera y no puedes pagar el combustible....alguien se acerca al mostrador y te lo paga, inmediatamente. Si quieres aprender árabe son sorprendemente ayudables, pero a la vez son muy cerrados y es dificil hacer amigos por la barrera linguistica y cultural, si vives en el extranjero alli suelas acabar haciendo amigos con otros extranjeros.

Muuuuy interesante. Soy de Inglaterra, y he estado en Barcelona 11 o 12 veces, una vez con 23 amigos. Siempre he pensado que la gente de Barcelona es muy amable, pero un poco harto de britanicos, porque nos gusta tomar tanto alcohol. Mucha gente de aquí va a Barcelona para beber, nada mas! Pero somos amables en general.

En el "Personalmente..." antes que termine la palabra pude detectar al Argentino. En la segunda oracion, de provincia. Es cordobés para mí, ja ja...y es verdad España es el lugar de vacaciones de Europa, cuando estuve en Mallorca, note que muchos alemanes e ingleses tienen sus casas de vacaciones ahí..obvio tienen mucha plata los que hacen, eso el resto van a disfrutar ...me acuerdo que en un bar el mozo no sabía español...

Soy inglés pero intentaré escribir en español. Me sorprendieron pero me alegraron los comentarios positivos sobre los britanicos. He viajado muchas veces a España y siempre he pensado que los españoles y los británicos son bastante parecidos. ¿Por qué los británicos se emborrachan tanto? Como ha dicho el hombre, no tenemos miedo de burlarnos de nosotros mismos. Así que emborracharse y hacer el ridículo no se considera tan mal comportamiento. De hecho, demuestra que no te tomas a ti mismo demasiado en serio. Esa es mi excusa. Amo españa y los españoles, estoy disfrutando de la serie.

No estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo sobre la razon por la cual los britanicos se emborrachan tanto. En mi opinion muchos lo hacen porque son tan reservados y amenudo tienen miedo relacionarse con gente, y el alcohol es la unica manera para deshacerse de esta verguenza. Es como lo necesitan.

I love Spain and look forward every year to visiting, we go for two months and travel all over. It helps to speak some Spanish. We have found the Spanish to be lovely friendly people. They have some of the most beautiful cities and architecture in the world. La sensación que hay en España (y diría que también extensible al resto del sur de Europa) es que los británicos hacen en España lo que en su país no se atreven a hacer. Y esto también pasa con los alemanes y otros europeos del norte. En lugares como Magaluf, Benidorm etc conocen bien la fama de esta gente.

I’m British and I don’t like mixing with drunk British holiday makers either so I wouldn’t expect the Spanish to. That’s the main reason I stopped going on holiday to Spain. When the British go out there, they go stupid. I spent two weeks in Tenerife when I was in my twenties and it was a nightmare with mass brawls and arrests and all sorts of trouble. I said ‘never again.’

Sooo... You know that there inlad countries more beyond out the coast in Spain, right?. If you want a more enjoyable place on Spain you should visit Asturias. Imagine a country with the mountains of Switzerland and the cliffs and weather of Ireland and you esasy suppose how Asturias it is.

Siendo británico, siempre me interesa cómo nos ve el resto del mundo. Yo bebo muy poco y siempre he bebido muy poco. Me sorprende lo bien que piensan los españoles de nosotros. Está en las noticias a veces aquí. Qué mal se portan los que llamamos "patanes del foot ball" allá en España. Y sí, tenemos sentido del humor. A veces, puede parecer muy extraño para otros pueblos. Somos muy malos con los idiomas. Tal vez porque vivimos en una isla donde todos hablan el mismo idioma. Entonces no tenemos que aprender otros, como el francés o el español y somos perezosos. La impresión de que aquí llueve todo el tiempo no es cierta. Podemos pasar semanas sin lluvia. En verano no hace tanto calor como en España, 25c es lo normal. A veces sube hasta los 30 c, pero eso es inusual. Si vienes aquí de vacaciones, (vacaciones). Por favor, no pase todo su tiempo en Londres. El resto de Gran Bretaña es muy diferente y hay lugares muy hermosos aquí. Voy a usar un traductor de computadora al español, espero que sea correcto. Te deseo lo mejor desde Gales Gran Bretaña :-)

Dos cosas que el video me aclaró: 1.- España es lingüísticamente tan diversa como cualquier país, no todos tienen el mismo acento. Digo esto porque antes pensaba que todos hablaban como Frank Cuesta, pero veo que no jaja. Esto ha de ser porque los acentos varían dependiendo de la región (Andalucía, Cataluña, Galicia, etc), eso sumado la combinación del acento de los inmigrantes de otros países hispanohablantes con el de Madrid, le da un toque exquisito de diversidad a España. 2.- El inglés británico es muy distinto al estadounidense, a esas dos señoras (6:16) no les entendí literalmente nada, y a los otros británicos me costaba trabajo entender algunas palabras sin ver los subtítulos. Me doy cuenta que estoy acostumbradísimo al inglés americano, dejan fluir más su pronunciación jaja ¡Gran video, saludos!

He's from Andalucía in Spain (probably Cádiz), they are infamous for having incredibly strong accents so don't feel too bad if you didn't understand. You've just got to listen to a *lot* of Spanish language podcasts from lots of countries, all the time. If you want to understand people who speak like that, you can look up people speaking from Andalucía, especially Cádiz.

That moment when you understand everything without reading the subtitles and the guy at 2:34 shows up, bringing your confidence down.

I spent a month in Cádiz and I think he's from Cádiz, they have the strongest accents in the world, It's actually insane how unclear they are, probably even some Spanish people might have trouble understanding (especially outside Andalucía).

Personally I think that the British and the Spanish have something in common, we don't like to be at home, we like to socialize, in the bar or the pub. In few European countries there is this custom. The big difference is that we Spaniards show our emotions more and the British are more reserved and that ends up taking its toll on them. Another thing we have in common is that both peoples have a ruling class that considers itself conquerors and therefore above ordinary people. , the Spanish comes from the times of the Reconquest and the British from the conquest by the Normans, we have both been important empires, we have already gotten used to not being an empire anymore, but the majority of the British still live believing that their empire exists

It is sad that for many British people, life ends at 30 when they get a partner and a mortgage, and they stop going out. One of the many things I like about Spain is that people don't stop going out when they get to a certain age or enter a relationship with someone. So I often meet more like minded people in Spain than I do in the UK.

Can you also make a video about what do Spanish think about the Philippines? (which is also a former colony of Spain)

The main though it's "damm! ¡It's a pity don't communicate on Spanish" there are certain feeling annoyed by the impossibility of reconnecting through Spanish, the language in which the anthem of the Philippines was written and all the works of José Rizal. It is curious and paradoxical that I can read "noli me tangere" in the original and Filipinos must read it in Tagalog or English translations.

Los británicos que veranean donde vivo son muy educados y nunca han dado problemas, ni siquiera se hacen notar. Sin embargo cuando escucho a españoles hablando sobre ellos las opiniones son muy diferentes.

Pero tengo es muy extraño para mi por aprender español porque en la primera vez estoy seinto muy intranquilo que idioma es !!!!

I think a lot of the fact we don’t speak other languages is given the previous recent empire the youth don’t really feel the need to invest time in that. It’s also an island nation and it’s quite typical with island nations hence voting to leave the EU etc

A lot of people worldwide have started to drop other languages, the only one they want to learn is English. I've seen it a lot. I know a guy from Serbia who speaks English and he absolutely refuses to learn French or any other language apart from English, what can you do, you can't force people to learn.

We English adore the Spanish ❤❤❤

We are tolerant but it doesn´t hide the negative aspects that British have. The program has chosen favorable and neutral opinions to keep you satisfied. As a Spaniard, I tell you that we are tired of the British who thinking that Spain is a country of waiters and thinking that they can do whatever they want. Another negative aspect is that many of you have lived in this country for many years and are not able to adapt or even learn our language. Sorry if I was rude with my comment but British people have a serious problem of ethnocentrism and ego

@@Gabriel-xl1ro I'm sorry you feel that way and you may have a point about SOME British tourists and ex-pats in Spain. Should we all stop visiting though? Would be a shame to lose that (pre-pandemic) 18 billion euros a year spend?

@@thereunionparty I`ve never said that I don`t want British people come to my country. I`ve said that we are tired of certain attitudes. Attitudes that you repeat now when you comment on those supposed economic losses. This condescending tone that you think we are economically dependent on your tourism: Does that mean we have to stand with this "whatever they want" British tourism? I`ve only criticized behaviors that in your country would be unacceptable.

@@Gabriel-xl1ro I think you're the one with the attitude my friend. Where do you get the condescending tone from? I'm the one who's making concessions aren't I? I didn't say you were economically dependent on our tourism - just that if it wasn't there it would be a big hole in your GDP. True or not? Also if the situation were reversed, if millions of Spanish people came to Britain every year, in tourist enclaves specifically designed to cater for them, do you think all the behaviour would be beyond reproach?

@@thereunionparty i have to agree with Gabriel. You clearly made that comment about 18 billions to excuse the behavior of British tourists in Spain. Either way you wouldn't respond with "money talk". British tourists are known as being self centered, rude, drunks etc. not just in Spain, but probably everywhere. I know it's not pleasant reputation but it's reality.

Such a clean city ( Barcelona? ) Maybe that's why the Spanish language doesn't have a word for litter

¡Tienes un muy buen nivel de Español, amigo! Me imagino que tu nivel de Español hablado debe ser igual o similar. Personalmente yo intento aprender inglés pero nunca logro entender una palabra de lo que dicen los hablantes nativos, el inglés es demasiado difícil de comprender cuando hablan.

Culturalmente creo que el mundo hispano puede y debe aprender del anglosajon a que se debe trabajar y pensar para poder vivir, y el anglosajon del hispano que hay que trabajar para vivir y no viceversa. Ambos mundos son curiosamente complementarios.😊😊😊

Pues es verdad. Hasta no que no escuché piintoor no me había percatado. Me resulta curioso que los cordobeses españoles tienen un tipo de apertura vocálica.

Bueno, en mi caso YO no he conocido a muchos españoles, ni británicos, pero los que he conocido son muy inteligentes y educados. Diría que les gusta divertirse y beber. Son muy simpáticos. Hablando de beber y siempre en general, aunque sabemos que las generalizaciones no son buenas, me parece que los españoles beben más vino y los británicos más cerveza.

Fascinante que los tres primeros entrevistados no son españoles!!!

Well I'm British by Nationality and I have never been to a nightclub in my life I'm not really allowed to go to pubs but I would like to just for my social life, I'm extremely self conscious and avoid getting drunk at all costs, I mean in fact I am not a drinker full stop and alcohol is like a once in a while treat for me.

Es una pregunta interesante. Yo diría que la mayor parte de la gente respondería Europa por una cuestión lógica de cercanía. Es evidente que hay muchísimos lazos de España con Latinoamérica pero en la actualidad es una relación muy lejana porque la mayoría de españoles no ha estado jamás en Latinoamérica. Es como ese primo lejano que has visto sólo una vez en tu vida y apenas lo conoces. Aún así hay muchísima inmigración latinoamericana actualmente en España pero la interacción entre ambos grupos no es mucha.

El sur de Europa (Portugal, Italia, España, Grecia, sur de Francia, tal vez Irlanda) Porque con los países más el norte (Suecia, Finlandia, holanda, Alemania, Polonia etc)…nada que ver. Obviamente por el desarrollo y estilo de vida se parecen a toda la unión europea pero en cuanto a costumbres sociales, la familia, etcétera, hay algo que existe entre España, sus vecinos y los países de Latinoamérica

Los únicos que realmente son españoles, que es esa pareja, dijo lo que realmente los españoles pensamos de los ingleses... que beben mucho y siempre la lían.

Fawlty Towers is a must-watch! Manuel's character was not reduced and he was not at all an idiot. Only Basil was an idiot, he had hired Manuel because he fancied himself a pretty good Spanish speaker (even though he wasn't) and blamed Manuel for not understanding his (let's say interesting) Spanglish. It was kind of as he said, a joke about Brits but specifically about wannabe upper class Brits not willing to learn a language and being pompous. Manuel was a cheerful, respectful and hardworking bloke, so I'd say the Monty Python brother nailed the Latino stereotype! 😉 They always nail stereotypes (even ones you hadn't noticed it existed before), no denying it! Sorry just had to rant/defend my beloved series from political correctness 😉

This wasn't the best example, they should make another one in Madrid Many of the interviewed were not even Spaniards, but foreign tourists and immigrants living in Barcelona on the Mediterranean, where the opinion of the British is a bit different than if you asked the average Spaniard in the center of the country where the opinion of the British is much more favorable.

Unfortunately we English speaking ppl are very poor at learning languages ( See this example) so I think because of a lack of access to Europe, plus there some English ppl are very arrogant and think everyone should speak English.

I don't understand you. If you criticize exactly this attitude, why are you trying to excuse yourself for being useless at learning Spanish? This is part of this attitude that annoys us. The result doesn't matter. It's the effort what people value positively.

Esa es la sensación que tiene todo extranjero que ha estudiado durante años lengua española y escuchado audios en un acento castellano normativo hasta estrellarse en Andalucía con el acento andaluz. Todo lo conocido y aprendido no sirve de nada y hay que aprender a comprender de nuevo.

Because most Brits go on holiday, 90% of the time for a week or two. Can't get much culture in a week, just enjoy the sun, sand and alcohol away from work or school. Most people from Europe don't have the opportunity to go on holidays, we take advantage of that opportunity to let it go.

Por España a los gallegos se les conoce por tener fama de ambigüos, huidizos y por responder preguntando. Igual tienes algo de eso, además de neoyorquino. @@ignacioheredia9599 si, el era mayormente de desendencía Gallego pero tambien tenía un poco de Asturias. Se que ahí hay mucho campo verdad? Como mucho verde y animales, comida organica. Eso es lo que me dicén. Suena muy bonito. Pero tengo mas curiosidad a Barcelona porque quisiera ver la Sagrada Familia en persona.

He trabajado con britanicos y con una excepcion no me he llevado bien con ninguno.

es gaditano o quizas sevillano, es casi imposible entenderlo si no estás acostumbrado a ese acento, tendrias que vivir en Andalucia para acostumbrarte

A ver, que hay que ser honestos y no es como si los ingleses tuvieran la mejor reputación en España. Hay muchos casos de ingleses vininedo de turismo y emborracharse y simplemente faltando el respeto a la gente local
