Riley is my second English Setter. He is an absolutely great dog, for friendliness and affection he cannot be beat! He is high energy, and has his own mind when he is being walked on a leash. A couple of years ago a tree was up rooted by a storm, near our home. A small pool formed where the roots used to be, and a bunch of frogs made it their home. Every time we went for a walk he would sit down and watch the frogs. Eventually it dried up and the frogs moved on. For about a year and a half, even during the winter with feet of snow, he continued to check for 'his frogs'! Eventually he started cutting back... But it is Spring again, and he has started looking for them again... He is a beautiful, friendly dog, and people stop me all the time, to ask what kind of a dog he is, and if they can pet him, which of course they can. He loves it. Around other dogs, he is very friendly from the start. But if the other dog is aggressive, Riley has the ability to get them to back down (even much bigger, aggressive breeds), very quickly! When he passes, I will be devastated (again - The lose of Megan our first English Setter, really tore me up!), but I will look for another English Setter! Riley is five now. I pray that he lives many more years!!!

I grew up with 2 Setters and they where the best Family Dogs in the World. They are perfect with Children and they loved Cats so very much. They wanted to say hello to every cat they met :-) They also protected us always and came all the time for hugs and kisses :-) We went always for long walks but it was very risky to let them off the leash... because they are hunting dogs and when they did smell something they could disappear for hours!!!!! And they loved dirt and water so we could shower them after every walk ;-) Later we had a Colley who was also a good Dog but my Heart will always beat for our Setters! They are the best!!! Just never forget they have strong hunting instincts...

Loved my E Setter Daisy. Great personality, never aggressive, fun family dog, predictable behaviors like high pray and friendly to everyone. Not a guard dog. Gorgeous SOFT fur! Her feathering was super pretty. Best of all her tail!! It points straight up and then horizontal. Daisy pointed too!

I have owned three English Setters, and they were all very loving and affectionate dogs. They were great with kids, but the males would scent mark in the house. I was able to break them of that but it took letting them out often, and putting the males in a cage when I was to be gone. They were all great hunting dogs and would go on point when they had a bird frozen. My dogs were long legged and could jump any fence in the neighborhood, so I would leash them together to prevent them from jumping the fences. I would only leash two dogs together at a time. One dog could jump the fence but the remaining leash was too short for the other to follow. That gave me a chance to reprimand the one that went over the fence, thus teaching them not to jump fences. English Setters are hunting dogs. That has been bred into them for four hundred years. It is what they do if they have the opportunity. My last male died the 30 of this last December. His name was Rhino. Even as a pup he hunted very well. Rhino means nose, and he was so good at an early age that I decided to name him Rhino. I will never forget what a great companion he was. I hope all of you will have that same kind of experience that I had with your dog.

We just lost our 1st English Setter, which has been considerably difficult. She was the best dog ever. They are dedicated, emotionally devoted dogs that cannot be matched! We will most surely get another, as I have had many dogs and none have come close!

Alex Stramel Hope you enjoy and love your setter as much as I do, our new one named Penny is beyond adorable and she is so snuggly. They are a little willful as puppies, forgot about that over the years. Take the puppy to obedience training and you will be good to go.

@@Zoe-dy4uk she is so wonderfully snuggly and devoted. They are so bright, but until mature are sometimes stubborn and willful as well. 😊

Very odd rating system - wanderlust potential was put at zero it should have been a 10 so as to imply a high probability - saying 0 makes it seem there isnt
