I'm on my 3rd Collie. Wanderlust? Bull crap. I have never had a single instance of any of my collies walking off on their own, even when one of their friends is near. Have known many Collie owners and have never heard of one straying. Easiest dogs to train I've ever had, highly intelligent and excellent memory. They also like to show off how truly intelligent they are. Don't be surprised when you find they know how to do something you never taught them to do! Socialization is easy, they tend to be happy to meet new people. Make sure you learn how to do it properly and you will never have a problem. In my years of owning and being around Collues (most of my life), I have only met 1 that was a barker - the owner kept him chained, never saw him not on a chain. Never had an issue when I've had to leave them alone, never met anyone that did. They are not an aggressive breed, you won't be able to train them as an attack dog. That said, don't try anything around a Collie's family because they will protect their families until their dying breath. They do love to be with their families so don't be surprised if you wake up in the morning with a very comfortable dog lying beside you. It amazes me that they can climb up on the bed and snuggle in without waking me or my wife. They do require regular, thorough grooming. If you love the breed but can't do the grooming several times a week, you have 2 choices. The first, obviously, don't get a Collie. The second choice, which is what I opted for on my current Collie is known as a Smooth Collie. Exactly the same dog in every way, including colour, but their coat is about the same length as a German Shepherd's. The Smooth Collie and Rough Collie can come from the same litter, as long as one of the parents is a Smooth. Both recognized by every kennel club. They still have the undercoat, but grooming is down to about 10 minutes every couple of weeks. They do need daily exercise - like a long, brisk walk or a good run at the dog park. Once daily is sufficient.

As a herd dog, it is absolutely against the collie's nature to leave the "herd" i.g. the family/owner. There are something seriously wrong with any Collie that strays. Also, they shouldn't be allowed any "prey drive" (hunting instinkts). That would be incompatible with it's function as a herddog. People that breed on dogs with these traits, are destroying the breed, making it a german sheperd with the looks of a collie, instead of an actual collie.

We had a sable rough and GSD mix when I was growing up, as well as a couple of her pups that we kept. The collie traits were predominant and I noticed no high wanderlust potential. However, that could have been tempered some by the GSD. I am not sure. She always wanted to stay close to the family, guard and cuddle us; thought she was a lap dog, was very gentle, and was a perfect fit for our family. However, we had to put her down when she was only six, or eight; because she developed severe "Collie Nose." Nothing we and the vets tried could stop the inevitable. That was over 20 years ago now. The Sable Rough Collie still remains tied with the Doberman Pinscher as my favorite breed. I have heard people argue against a collie being used as a PTSD service dog, but based upon even my limited experience, I find it to be quite the opposite, and am determined to go through one of the regional collie breeders to get a pup and go through the process for one. If people that have never met a collie are considering getting one, I would encourage it so long as they can keep the lifelong commitment to the canine. They aren't just an intelligent and pretty face. They are loving, loyal, protective, sweet, mild-mannered, energetic, joyous dogs that can be the best friend that you have ever had.

Grooming difficulty is way overrated in Collies. They don’t shed like the German Shepherd or Retreiver (hairs all over the place) they shed in clumps of underfur which can be pulled out. They don’t need to be brushed every day, once a week is more than sufficient. They have just the right energy level, in the middle. Finally, they are not wanderers! The main negative for me is barkiness, but they (and all dogs) can be trained not to. (I trained my Chihuahua mix not to bark, so if she could be trained, any dog can!)

One more point about the Collie I do not like what the UK Collie breeders did regarding the classic Collie look. They may act like Collies but it just seems off. In my opinion the American Collie is the look that I think of as the Collie. Hopefully American & Canadian Collie breeders will not copy their UK counterparts in making a big mistake.

3698s both collie types are lovely however the breed originated in the UK (specifically Scotland) and the breed standard has remained consistent in the UK whereas American breeders have produced a larger collie along with breeding Merle collies together to produce the ‘white’ collies. This choice took the American collie lines in a negative direction (as it introduced health problems along with being unethical). Therefore, the UK collies tend to resemble the ‘classic collie look’. I respect your opinion though.

The Scotch Collie is a landrace breed of dog which originated from the highland regions of Scotland. The breed consisted of both the long-haired (now known as Rough) Collie and the short-haired (now known as Smooth) Collie. It is generally believed to have descended from a variety of ancient herding dogs, some dating back to the Roman occupation, which may have included Roman Cattle Dogs, Native Celtic Dogs and Viking Herding Spitzes.[1][2] Other ancestors include the Gordon and Irish Setters.[3] HistoryEdit In Scotland, this dog was referred to as "cooley", "coaly" and "colley" dogs. The name "Collie" is thought to come from the Scots word for "black" or "coal" (coll) and may have referred to a type of sheep (Coaley) which they were once used to herd.[3] However, "Collie" might also have come from the Gaelic càilean and cóilean for "dog" or "young pup", or from the Celtic word for "useful" which is "collie".[4] Due to its popularity, it was imported to other countries including the U.S., where it simply became known as the Scotch Collie. In its native land, Scotch Collies were used for herding sheep and other farm animals, as well as guarding the homestead and hunting. In the 1800s and early 1900s, a large number of these dogs were imported to America to assist families in maintaining their farms.[5] As their numbers and popularity grew, the Scotch Collie began to be widely owned as pets and eventually shown at conformation events in both England (Birmingham 1860) and America (New York, around 1878).[6] In 1885, the Scotch Collie Club was formed[7] and the breed was accepted into the AKC (American Kennel Club). A year later, the Collie Club of America was formed.[8] The name Scotch Collie was initially used by the AKC for this new breed. However, the "Scotch" was eventually dropped as the AKC chose to use the terms "Rough" and "Smooth" to refer to these collies. It is generally believed that this occurred in an attempt to differentiate the show dogs from the common, or working, Scotch Collies.[9] Following the continued popularity of this breed and their increased appearance in conformation shows, the Rough and Smooth Collies began to change in form, developing the flat skull and long narrow head familiar in today's collies, along with the more pronounced mane, or bib, of the Rough Collie.[2] The changes occurred due to outcrossing with other dog breeds, possibly the Borzoi but more probably the Greyhound.[10] These physical changes further separated the original Scotch Collies from the collies which developed from it. The Scotch Collie was at one time registerable by the United Kennel Club as well as the National Kennel Club (as the Old Time Farm Shepherd) but, at some point, lost recognition and began to be absorbed into other breeds, including the English Shepherd, which opened its registry to the breed.[2] Scotch Collies were not only instrumental in the development of the Rough and Smooth Collies, but also of the Australian Shepherd, and they may have materially contributed to the development of other breeds including, but not limited to, English Shepherds, Border Collies, and Shetland Sheepdogs.[11] Although no longer recognized as a distinct breed by American breed clubs, the Scotch Collies continued to be popular with families and farmers as useful companions and helpers on the small farms/homesteads into the 1950s and 1960s. However, as the American farm began to decline, the Scotch Collie as a breed began to lose not only numbers but even their name, as the breed became referred to as 'Farm Collies', 'Farm Shepherds' and 'Old-fashioned Collies'.[12] In the 1990s, renewed interest in the breed occurred, and remnants of the last known Scotch Collies in the U.S. were located in Tennessee and North Carolina (by Richard McDuffie), as well as in Canada (by Erika DuBois).[13] These dogs were referred to as Old-Time Farm Shepherds, as opposed to Scotch Collies, primarily to avoid confusion with the more popular and widely recognized collie breeds.[14] In the 2000s, the Scotch Collie still remained small in numbers and a group was formed to further promote the breed (OTSCA), this time referring to it as 'Old Time Scotch Collie'.[15] The group maintains an open registry for Scotch Collies as well as any farm collie-type dog. As of May 2017, the pedigree database contained only 174 registered Old Time Scotch Collies.

What about the Smooth Collie? The Rough Collie and the Smooth Collie are considered to be the same breed, but with different hair lengths.

They’re supposed to be pretty much the same temperament wise. I’ve heard some owners say that they find smooths to be slightly higher energy, and usually have a better herding instinct, but others disagree.
