English Pronunciation | The Letter 'D' | 3 Ways to Pronounce the Letter D in English!
In this English Pronunciation lesson, we are going to learn how to pronounce the letter D in English. We will also learn about the Silent D letter.
There are 3 ways to pronounce the Letter D in English.
The first is as a /d/ in words like Dog and Do. This /d/ sound can be difficult because sometimes it is pronounced very strongly, for example at the beginning of words like Dear and Dinosaur, but, at other times, it can be pronounced in a more soft way such as at the end of words like 'rude' and 'mood'.
The second way to pronounce the letter D is as a /t/ sound in words like Kissed and Watched. The Letter D is pronounced as a /t/ only in regular verbs that finish in a voiceless consonant (e.g t/p/k/s) In the past simple these regular verbs always end in -ED but the ED is pronounced /t/. Finally, we can also pronounce the letter C as a /ʤ/ sound in words like Soldier and Edge.
The Letter D in English is a CONSONANT letter and is pronounced in the alphabet as /di:/. It follows the letters A,B and C in the alphabet. If you want to learn how to pronounce those letters check out the videos below!
Letter A -- • English Pronunciation ...
Letter B -- • English Pronunciation ...
Letter C -- • English Pronunciation ...
In the video we will look at all the ways to pronounce the Letter D and also take a quick look at other things like what sound we pronounce when we see double d (dd) or when we pronounce the D as a glottal d (glottal stop). I hope you enjoy the lesson and you learn a lot from it! Check out the chapters below if you wish to skip to a different part of the video for more practice!
I recommend watching this video more than once and trying to repeat every D word after me until you feel super happy with your pronunciation!

I think you mean, “in the past love does NOT have the /t/ sound” 😉 Remember, ‘Love’ ends in a voiced consonant /v/ so it becomes /lʌvd/ with a /d/. Verbs that end in an unvoiced consonant will take the /t/ sound. For example Kicked (kɪkt) smashed (smæʃt) and popped (pɒpt).
