Bringing Harmison back into the team for this game was an absolute masterstroke. Oh, and the run out by Flintoff was absolutely crucial!

My favourite victory I've seen from England. For me, better than the 2005 Ashes, the 2010/11 Ashes, the 2004 summer, the 2000 breakthrough against Windies, the defeat of India to (briefly) clinch #1 slot in 2011. But The Oval in 2009 meant more to me than any of them - after the defeat at Headingley which felt like "normal service" being resumed, an OK (but no more) 1st innings total, then Stuart Broad's wonderful 5-for & suddenly a match/series I was convinced we'd lose was there for the taking.

After Ponting is run out, you can hear Shane Warne say, 'I can't believe he's been run out'.

I'm just amazed they made 348 in a 4th innings. Rarely these days do teams make 200 in the 4th innings. Just showed it was a series between two high quality sides.

Obviously a class series but the Aussie bowling attack had really tailed off since 07. Hilfy Clark Hauritz young Johnson hardly great players, only Siddle really caught the eye and was that good. But the AUS batsmen were still very good even if their great generation was also coming to an end

Porkerdude the ashes exist because of an incident after Australia's first cricket victory in England. Two men posted an obituary for English cricket in the Times newspaper and a set of bails was cremated in a 'funeral' for the game. Those ashes were placed in an urn and presented to the MCC. In fact the real ashes, the originals are on display at Lords cricket ground and the urn the players hold is a specially made replica. It is for this reason that the Ashes is contested between England and Australia alone. I have no doubt that many amazing players from other nations could provide just as much entertainment but that would NOT be The Ashes.

1882 the Ashes series was born stating that the English Cricket had died and the body lies in that urn... 127 years later Australian cricket fans attack and from 2010 the series should be dubbed "In Affectionate Remembrance of Australian CRICKET, which died at the Oval on 23rd AUGUST, 2009, Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances R.I.P. N.B. - The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to England."

The Ashes will only be played for by Australia and England, and always will be. I'm pretty sure India and Pakistan have their own test series, besides the Ashes is the name of OUR test series and has that significance as a small urn was presented by a woman to the players.

You're bizarre! It's not about being 'allowed' to do something. The World Series and The Ashes are not worldwide events organised by an international committee like with FIFA and the football world cup...it's a private event organised by co-operation and through tradition between two nations. The Six Nations rugby tournament is another example, or the Euro football competition.

No it's not. And what makes you think i'm English, I'm an Indian. Plus football requires fitness levels that cricketers can't even imagine, don't ever compare cricket to football, if someone tried to play football for 8 hours they would probably die.

Why on Earth would Pakistan and India be entitled to join in the Ashes? It's a historic match celebrating the age-old rivallry between Australia and England; it's not the World Cup! Next you'll be demanding that every country should be allowed to play in the American's Baseball 'World Series'.

This was the first series Shane Warne commentated for sky sports, I remember initially hating him. Because why not, hes the man an englishman loves to hate. But as the series went on he showed his professionalism as a commentator and it shows here. When that 10th wicket goes he immediately gives kudos to England. Absolutelyhated seeing england play against him, but theres not doubt how much quality this man has.

@aussiumo Very true, the guys you speak of are some of the best of all time, but after living there for a year, I realised that nice beaches and land mass without a huge population density are a poor substitute for the racism and narrow mindedness, (not to mention a deep rooted chip on shoulders regarding the country's beginnings and roots), that appears to be ingrained within their society; ignorance rains supreme and though I had a great time there, I was well pleased to get home!
