When Joe Mercer took over briefly..He experimented briefly but brilliantly with Channon/Keegan/Worthington up front, Brooking and Bell prompting from midfield and Dave Watson and Colin Todd reinforcing the defensive line (it would have been Roy Mcfarland but for injury), Revie came along and binned it..
30:40 - John Cleese makes his international debut for Czechoslovakia.
As I remember we lost the corresponding game in Czechoslovakia and failed to qualify......again.
Revie was not only a hopeless England manager, but sold his country out for personal profit with the Admiral deal, and then just walked away when Saudi Arabia offered him more money than the FA were paying him. Shameful man with no morals or pride. Brian Clough was absolutely right about him.

I am even more confused as Don Revie as an England manager was so different to the Don Revie as a Leeds United manager. England looked horrible in the Euro and WC qualifiers whereas Leeds was a much-feared side in European club football.

@@mohdazmi10 It's easier to manage a club side when you see the players most days whereas at international level you might only see them 6 times a year so it's more difficult to create an understanding but Revie didn't help himself by not trying to create a settled team - he thought he could pick teams to suit different types of game. He also wasn't helped by the fact that the players weren't all they were cracked up to be which he correctly surmised at the time.
A glimmer of light in a very dark decade for the England team.

That may also happen to the present Italian team and much worse.

Back when it was special to play at Wembley.
What a wonderful strip. Crap team, but great strip.
Channon scoring and 2 great assists….in the wilderness 70s he was a good player, as was Bell
Revie's 1st match as England's manager
