England 3-0 Czechoslovakia (1974) ECQ
Спорт
Don Revie's reign as England manager gets off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Czechoslovakia in October 1974 in a European Championship qualifier. Who would have imagined after this result that the Czechs would go on to win the competition?! England failed to qualify.

Good football, good play...old times...another world.
Old Wembley had such a great atmosphere
From this match, it was then very hard to imagine that Czechoslovakia would finally win the Cup two years later.
I think this was Don Revie's first match as manager with England as before him,Joe Mercer was the caretaker coach. It was an European Championship match with Czechoslovakia at Wembley in 1974 with England winning 3-0 with goals from Mick Channon and Colin Bell(2).But it was to be the recently deceased Norman Hunter's farewell game for England.
Colin Bell = class
Channon's pass for the second goal at 5.05 was sublime. I am surprised it isn't famous.

England had some terrific players in this era - but Revie kept changing his sides around too much. They never had a settled side under him.

Fantastic quality, fantastic video.. Later in the qualifying the Czechs did their best.

Criminal how Dave Thomas did not get a lot more games for England under Revie , was quite possible the best winger/crosser of a ball back in the 70's

Whereas Colin Ball had no idea he was a footballer. For years he thought he was the second gunman on the grassy knoll. He used to joke to his best pal Jimmy Bingham about getting away with murder, as well as lousy fashion sense.

That was the one and only kit my parents bought me in 1974 as a boy. Seeing it again with the little Admiral transfer took me right back.
amazing how channon didnt leave to a bigger club, he always played for england
Managers who sat in the dugout rather than prancing down the touchline screaming abuse at the referee, players who just got on with the game after being fouled, happier times when football actually mattered.
England had such under rated players and teams in these years. There was just a lot of decent national sides, including Scotland 👍☺⚽❤

Kevin Keegan made a great point when Don Revie died ,"England were just not good enough" Unfortunately the presumption England were great ,they really weren't ,and only qualified for the WC in 1982 because of the extended tournament that meant you qualified finishing second.

That's a bit harsh, to have to win your group to qualify was always going to be very robust challenge, saying that freeing it up for the runner up group was always more than reasonable really..
r i p colin bell...great player
Nasty elbow on Bell after his last goal
A very good win against an excellent Czechoslovak team. The fact that a strong England side failed to qualify for the final stages in 1976, whereas the current England side qualified for Euro 2016 by winning every game, owes everything to the changes in the system and nothing to the relevant strengths of the sides then and now.

Yep, under modern rules the top 2 go through so England would have qualified. We were also in a tough group with the eventual competiton winners.

in the very early 1970s, England had a dip of quality but from around 1974 until the end of the decade England had some excellent teams and players..the failures not to qualify for the World Cup is very misleading. In 1978 England did not qualify on goal difference not points, both times losing out to semi finalists, Poland and Italy...

Aye! And England along with other countries mixing it up a bit having non-indigenous people representing a foreign country! Oh, and while we are at it, why not include a woman or two ( or eleven ) and throw in some transexuals? After all, that is what the all-inclusive/ anything goes brigade want, so why not you narrow-minded, traditionalist, KJV 1611 Bible believing Christians you?

Good football but unbelievable this 50 years ago
Nice second goal after nice pass.
England playing really well here. Had the basis of a good side. You would think only one of these teams had the chance to win the tournament two years later
England's first match in the new "Admiral" strip. It was quite startling at the time, and very controversial. I remember I absolutely hated it at first, then changed my mind completely when the Subbuteo version came out lol!
Don Revie then the England manager often made changes to the England line up and never had a settled team. When he was in charge Alan Ball,Colin Bell,Malcom MacDonald and Paul Madeley were on their way out of the England team.
Channon scored 1 made 2 what more can you say🤗🐻👍

Don Revie's England team really whipped Czechosolvakia in that Euro qualifying match at the old Wembley Stadium one evening in the autumn of 1974. It is somewhat ironic that, less than two years later, in the summer of '76, the Czechs became champions of Europe..... whereas England failed to qualify for the latter stages of the competition.

We in England played to many domestic matches then and no time period of rest before internationals...plus the Czecks had less domestic games and few players of international quality, however they made a good/hardworking team that endevoured !

England really should have qualified with the players we had, Keegan, Bell, Channon, Clemence, Shilton, if we had just beaten Portugal at home we would have made it :(

Something to realize ... Then (up to 1976) the finals were just the semi's and Final ... maybe a third place game ... as you had to win the qualifying group, then play a two legged Quarter Final (Wales lost to Yugoslavia) to get to the finals. At the point of qualifying the four nations came to a conclusion as to Who would Host the Final Stages ... Yugoslavia became the Hosts in 1976.

Yes it was much harder to qualify back then. To be fair ti the England managers. To not qualify now (Euro 2008), is a disgrace!
England did well for this game but it’s a wonder why Revie chopped n changed his teams even when they were doing well. It led to his downfall.
Did Don Revie have shares in Admiral sportswear? Leeds started wearing Admiral when Revie was manager, then England. £££££

Ian Cruise Actually, you weren’t a million miles away. Revie was instrumental in bringing Admiral to Leeds and then England. The previous strip was a classic. This was England’s first game in the Admiral gear - as a 9 year-old, I hated it - it looked cheap.

We stuffed Czechoslovakia and they went in to win the Euros 1976 with the Panenka penalty. Typical England
Didn’t Czechoslovakia become European champions in 1976 ?…this England team was excellent and extremely unlucky to come runner up in qualifying group to Poland in 74 World Cup and runners up to Italy in 78 qualifiers too …Poland got battered by England atWembley but showed how good they were by coming third behind west Germany and Holland in finals and Italy actually beat Argentina 1-0 in Argentina in the 78 World Cup finals too ……God was obviously a jock and hates us !!.
yes, the EURO 76 WINNER was playing in this game..................yes, indeed next summer England lifted the Euro trophy - smashing the old enemy West Germany........erm.....
England didn't qualify for the 74 and 78 world cups but far better than the fairies of todays over hyped/rated so called footballers
England once again completely flummoxed by a sweeper system, had to rely on the Czechs tiring in the last 15 minutes. Afterwards Don Revie privately admitted that England didn't have the players to win at the highest international level.
