I'd imagine such outstanding quality would be worth in excess of 400M in today's crazy market. Colin Bell, Alan Hudson and Alan Ball. Great memories of another time

But played for QPR, not one of the "luminati" Parkes, Clement, Gillard, Thomas & Bowles all overlooked. Only Gerry Francis got a real chance with 12 caps (8 as captain) until injuries held him back. (OK Shilton & Clemence were tough for Parkes to displace)

@@mjh5437 you're right they all did but some never got as many caps or opportunities as they may have deserved ie Ian Gillard who effectively only had Kevin Beattie in front of him at left back. Dave Clement had Phil Neal, Colin Todd & Steve Whitworth to fight against.

I watched Macdonald as a kid, I'm a Newcastle supporter, and he was a god to us. He would be worth untold millions today - the fastest, strongest centre forward of them all with a great left foot and excellent in the air. How England could do with him now! His lightning pace would still frighten the life out of any defence anywhere.

Didn't get a kick in the 1978 Cup Final. Was marked by one of his England team mates that day. Kevin Beattie (RIP) who was so sadly plagued by injury and who Bobby said was the finest player he ever had. That was saying something.

As a kid, he seemed to be like 'Roy of the Rovers' A truly,exciting fantastic player! ..But better than Shearer?. I'd say yes,but i'm sure they're many 'Geordie's' who would wanna put this Southerner(A long suffering Spurs fan) in his place on this matter!!👍🤔

Unbelievable that this was Alan Hudson's second and last appearance for England, with his first being a starring role in England's 2-0 win over West Germany. Of all the maverick players England had in the 70s (Marsh, Worthington, Bowles, Currie et al) Hudson must have been the most harshly treated. It seems not that much has changed with the England manager still seeming to not really trust skilful players like Grealish, Foden and Sancho.

Really is unbelievable that Hudson only played twice!

This was the first England Match I attended at Wembley. As an 10 year old American kid, I was in awe of the atmosphere created by the English fans. The tension was so thick in the air you could cut it with a knife. I’ll never forget it. I was, and still am, a huge Liverpool fan. Kevin Keegan was my idol and it was one of the greatest days of my life to be able to see him play in an England shirt live. SuperMac stole the day though. He could’ve had seven or eight that day

Dave Thomas was a fantastic winger who should have been an England regular,I`d play him ahead of Steve Coppell and Gordon Hill anyday.

Yep Revie said that to him right in front of the other players! They got pissed and literally conspired to make sure MacDonald scored a bunch against Cyprus. It worked out nicely.

Yes I have read about this 1975 European Championship qualifier between Cyprus and England at Wembley. Alan Ball the skipper was the only survivor from Ramsey's 1966 World Cup winning team.But his England career was cut short by manager Don Revie. The Newcastle striker Malcolm Macdonald scored all the goals in England's 5-0 win. But sadly like Ball Macdonald's England career was also cut short by Revie.

No comments? Supamac was a legend and I am not a Newcastle fan. Strong, powerful striker who never looked to dive in the box. Just score. Thanks for posting this. When we actually had a team to be proud of.

One of the greatest nights in English football ''Super Mac'' of Tyneside puts the Cypriots to the sword, and a very sharp one at that.....

Revie for some reason did not like MacDonald and told him that if he did not score he would never pick him again. So Alan Ball and the rest of team got together and decided to see if they could get supermac to score 6 as it had never been done, and they almost did it. MacDonald tells this in his autobiography

McDonald had such a powerful leap that allowed him to be an exceptionally great header of the ball.

He also had speed, he actually ran 100 meter's in a time that would have qualified him for an Olympic place. Despite enjoying a pint and a cigar.

1970 we should have retained the trophy.....yet English football died that night in '73 v Pol. Heading into my 50th year and I would give it ALL to see England win one more.....

Mick Channon is my favourite player of the mid '70's.

I was there at Wembley Stadium for this game. The atmosphere was electric.

Supermac my alltime favourite No 9

One of the finest England sides ever. Supermac looked like a middleweight boxer and Kevin Beattie was probably the finest defender this country ever produce along with Sir Bobby Moore. The midfield wasn’t too bad either! Bell, Hudson and Ball with Keegan buzzing about too. A special mention for the brilliant Dave Thomas. The lad never wore shin pads.

Beattie being wracked with injures meant latter that England had to have Phil Thompson in the back line (though a good defender) held no torch to him in the later 1970's..

Dave Thomas His feet were so quick he rarely got kicked. Came through the QPR squad that included the Morgan brothers, Gerry Francis Stan Bowles Ian Gillard Phil Parkes Dave Clement

Coleman in his commentary never gave supermac the lickings of a dog he was too busy complementing the players who put crosses in etc. Supermac was easily the best centre forward around at the time

With respect, it may have been against lowly Cyprus but to score all 5 goals is still some feat. However, as a prolific goalscorer at that time, I think you would be hard pushed to find a better than Derby's Kevin Hector. Also, how Leeds skillful, silky smooth operator Allan Clarke never won more caps than he did seems a mystery to me.

My father gave me the choice for my 11th birthday; see England against Cyprus or a Fulham game. I bleed the Black and White of Fulham......but it was great to be there that night to see MM score those 5.

I always thought Mac was a Geordie at the time and only found out fairly recently that he was a born & bred Londoner from Fulham where I live now,do you happen to know which street he grew up in?

I remember seeing this on tv as a kid. I think it must have been hightights on sports night as live games were pretty rare in those days. What a team we had then. Keegan, Macdonald, Channon, Watson, Beatie. England never qualified for the world cup in the 1970s, apart from 1970 when they qualified as champtions, but it was much harder then. You would have to come top of your group with teams like Italy and Germany in the same group.

SuperMac had an excellent goals to games ratio wherever he went. An absolute God in Geordieland in the 70s until Gordon Lee ruined things. Grrr!

In my view, the longer Revie went in as England manager, the more confused he became, notwithstanding the injuries he was so unlucky with to Beattie, Francis, Bell etc. He chopped and changed too much instead of sticking roughly to a squad of players. Why did he so easily discard the excellent Dave Thomas, and goal machine Macdonald, midfield maestro Hudson etc. At least Sir Alf had general stability with his squads, but Revie selected over 70 players in his four year tenure. No wonder we were so inconsistent back then.

Interesting..do you think the injury to Beattie would prove especially damaging, by the late 1970s England were using Phil Thompson under Greenwood at the centre of defence where he would have been the solid man instead?

@@kailashpatel1706 Beattie never fulfilled his potential due to serious injuries. Bobby Robson rated him the best player he ever had at Ipswich, and close to the great Duncan Edwards ability wise.

MacDonald not up to the highest international standard.

Once saw an interview with Alan Ball , about the Revie years at England . And in it Alan said that Revie use to compile dossiers on opponants , but the players use to use them to write there card scores on . Alan has gone to his room and a few minutes later Revie is knocking on his door and saying "i did not compile these dossiers for nothing to which Ball replied " Boss we're England , if we can't beat Cyprus we should not be playing football "

I had dinner with a guy a few years ago who was in the Chelsea youth team back in the 60s.....he told me that he played against Fulham once, and his mate, who was at Fulham, warned him to watch out for Fulhams full back who was lightning quick......it was SuperMac and the guy told me he couldn't get near him all game.......some players transcend club loyalties and McDonald was one of them for me....my all time favourite England centre-forward..........bar one obvious exception of course!!..8-)

@@incredhulse1 Although not a fan at all of Revie's style of play he was a shrewd judge of a player and detected Hudson's (and a few others) 'you can't teach me anything I'll play my own way' attitude which is no good at international level. We now know that he correctly realised and secretly confided to others that although England had a lot of good players in numbers they didn't have enough up to the highest international standards. Unfortunately he didn't get the best out of what he had with his constantly changing the line up instead of selecting his best 16 and sticking with them.

Those "wilderness years" of not going to finals..74 and 78 were torture...mind you given our woeful performance at the last two finals I'm not sure which is worse!!..8-(

Greatest striker of all time

I am an Arsenal fan and thus saw SuperMac in action too. That said, what has killed the moder England team is too much money in the game. Success is now PURCHASED and no clubs risk trying home grown talent, so said talent is slowly dying :-(

i saw a documentary today on sky sports in which Malcolm Macdonald gave an interview. The manager at the time Don Revie told him if he did't score he would never play for England again. What a bastad Revie was. Macdonald was my childhood hero at Arsenal in the 70's. He didn't even congratulate him but congratulated all the other players. Don revie also had a spat with Brian clough who was a much better manager than revie.

Easy for Mac to rubbish Revie now that he is gone, Revie was a better club manager than an England manager, I'll give you that, Clough was a great manager who failed terribly at Leeds, and constantly talked his way out of the England job.

Failed terribly at Leeds. Yeah his 44 days were a real disaster. Each and every one of them. Macdonald should have played many more games for England. Revie was a traitor who left his country in the lurch to go and manage for petrodollars.

The days when players had a few years in the top division before even being considered for the England team . Today they play about five games as teenagers in the Premier League. They then find themselves in the National squad just weeks later . Have never heard of most of the England side now.

I was taken to the match as an 11 year old boy by my Greek Cypriot barber in Shepherds Bush who used to cut the hair for most of the great 1975-76 QPR team..Stan Bowles gave us some free tickets.

Macdonald 4 headed goals in one game.

Still find it baffling as to why England were so unsuccessful in the 70's when they had so many fine players such as Keegan, Channon, Bell, Todd, MacDonald, 2x Francis. The list goes on. Don Reeve must really have been shite!

Don revie wasn't liked by a lot of the England regulars at that time especially emlyn Hughes who had a total disregard for him.

Kevin Keehgan loved Revie said that the biggest compliment he could give him was that he was 2nd only to Shankly. Hughes on the other hand was a cowardly little turd who waited until DR had died before slagging him off.

Emlyn Hughes was completely overrated player and notorious for whinging and conniving behind peoples back. Tommy Smith was a far better captain and player at Liverpool and he was stitched up by Hughes. Watch Hughes on tv and he goes on as if anyone cares what he thinks. Think of all the great teams Liverpool have had and he never makes anyone greatest XI. By the most underrated Liverpool player of the great 70/80's was Jimmy Case. Marvellous player!

I'm well in to my 53rd year, and to be honest, I don't think I'll see it again.....mind you I think the days of International football are numbered, and ultimately the World Cup will be replaced with a World Club tournament. Clubs aren't going to want £100miil assets playing for countries like Wales that can't afford the insurance if they get crocked for good, and this Qatar fiasco is the beginning of the end if you ask me. A huge club v national federation row is brewing and the clubs will win

If you mean playing for England then you are spot on, but MacDonald continued to play until 1979. He was playing for Newcastle at the time of this England match then moved to Arsenal 1976-79 playing 84 games and scoring 42 goals. He played 14 times for England yet scored only 1 other goal apart from these 5! He retired prematurely at age 29 due to a knee Injury.

Everything was great about that night, firstly Supermac scoring 5 and secondly winding my Greek Cypriot mates up about the result at school !

What makes you think Engalnd could have beaten eventual third place finishers Poland if they lost away and and only drew at home with them in qualifying? Let alone beat West Germany or Holland? Is it this match against a minnow that makes you think it?

Wouldn't have beaten Holland. Who were one of the 3 great teams that should have won the World Cup, along with Hungary 1954 and Brazil 1982.

McDonald should have played many more games for England. It seems that Revie wanted to play a game that didn't suit McD style.

Football should only ever be a battle of wits - in Britain is it a euphemism for moral and physical qualities which has always been our downfall. It's all about doing good things going forward and skill, intelligence and anticipation.

Hoik the ball into the box and hope the powerful center forward gets on the end of it. No wonder we spent decades in the international wilderness after being innovative world champions less than a decade before. This kind of football was effective against countries like Cyprus but woefully inadequate against above average nations.

I agree 99% but England weren't innovative champions - that was mostly physical power with a few flashes of real skill from Peters, Hurst and Charlton.

@@gunternetzer9621 I was referring to Ramsey's 442 formation of 'wingless wonders', which I've always been under the impression was extremely innovative at the time, at least in the English game where out-and-out wide men were always seen as an integral part of the game... perhaps others had done it before Ramsey?... I'm not entirely sure on that one.

Keep it simple, it worked for Clough and Taylor. Get it out wide, beat the defender, and put in a good cross - not nearly as easy as it sounds. This is not 'hoiking' the ball in. England's problems in the 70's were the managers, Revie in particular - we had the talent. Don't forget too that we were less then kindly treated in the qualifiers, to say the least. By the way, Poland, who we drew with after slaughtering them at Wembley, and so did not qualify for '74, finished third in that world cup, and Banks would not have let that lato goal go under him!

@@peterburry2014 Yes, it was innovative. Anyone who thinks England were just power with skill here and there has never seen the1970 side, a great side. The full Brazil vs England game is well worth watching - for long periods that great Brazil side could not get the ball. Alas, Banks was struck down with food poisoning and Bonetti let in goals Banks Just would never have and out we go 3-2 to West Germany in the quarters, from 2-0 up and in complete control. Charlton taken off and rested for the semis!

I don't like conspiracy theories but we were widely hated in that part of the world after Ramsey's "Animals" comment about Argentina in the 66 quarters... Very strange how only Banks came down with food poisoning at the last minute, forcing a mentally unprepared Bonnetti into a hugely pressurised situation. Also, England were completely dominant right up until Charlton left the field, freeing up Beckenbaur to dictate the game.... That's a measure of just how good that team was.

Cyprus really poor here - England flattered really.

England in those days just play it out wide and cross and just repeat till 90 minutes.

it was not england that was good but because they played against a weaker opponent

It means,South Cyprus.There are two state s on Cyprus land.N.Cyprus Turkish R...and Southern Cyprus.

Those four goals were the only goals McDonald scored in that campaign. Against a team that conceded 16 in six games. The player, just like the team were vastly overrated in England and failed to qualify.
