Engine Swapping a 1972 4020 Powershift

Welcome back!
Last week, Jake and I swapped a rebuilt engine into his 1972 4020 Powershift. 1972 was the last year for the 4020 which makes this quite a valuable tractor, especially since it is a powershift. Getting the right engine into the tractor and adding some rare M&W parts makes it that much cooler and valuable. Gramps has also been pecking away on his Steiger project and now has it in primer.
Thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time!

    On my 4020, I used fibreglass (?) header wrap to completely wrap the exhaust manifold. It does a really good job of keeping the exhaust heat inside, not on the intake and other things. I think I had 1" wide wrap.

    I know what you mean about block changes. Our 1968 4020 diesel was 86 horsepower doggy tractor. The new 1971 4020 we bought had 104 horsepower out of the box and was a great tractor. We overhauled it with 10,000 plus hours because the water pump went out and it overheated.

    A late 4020 with an M&W kit usually was about 115-125hp if the pump wasn't messed with. They could touch the 150hp if you really twist the pump screw but the rear ends hated that.

  • @thegreenerthemeaner

    @thegreenerthemeaner

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Dave Blodgett The earlier 4020s with a M&W turbo would generally come in at 135. The instructions said to turn the pump back to yeild 110-115. If a shop had a dyno, they usually would pull them back. Most kits installed in the barn were not. There was more to it than just a manifold, turbo and pipes. Optional was a 7 bladed fan plus the shroud, and a larger aluminum oil pan and a pyrometer to watch the exhaust temperature. Lots of guys would buy the fan but the oil pan was considerably more money, partly why they are hard to find today. Keeping the oil cool enough was another part of the issue along with the rest of the drive train being up to the increase of power. If you bought all the options and set the power to 115-120 and kept the Powershift serviced, those tractors did just fine and went for many thousands of hours. Those were the smart guys that saw that backing the fuel off and gaining more power was actually saving them money in several ways.

    Jake & Jon. I put an M&W Turbo on a JD 4020 syncro, serial 238,000 I recall the installation instructions saying to put the probe of the pyrometer on the rear boss of the exhaust manifold, in the cast iron underneath the intake portion of the turbo, then to set up the pyro properly, put the tractor on a Dyno running engine at first stop on the hand throttle, sliding the probe for & aft , where you got the warmest temp,. lock the ferrill and nut and probe was set properly. My dad and I had an M&W dealship, when they ceased operations what happened to the M&W sleeve and piston portion of the company? Specifically the. Generation 2 ?

    Don't waste your time with that old Rajay turbo. Put on a T04 Garret they're alot better turbo. Leave the turbo oil filter off, they're to restrictive. Where did you find the M&W pan, because I've been looking with no results.

  • @RennerStockFarms

    We use the Rajays because that is what originally came in the M&W kit, I am sure the Garret is much better. Jake got that one from a friend, I am not sure where the best place to find one is.

    I was going to send you a can of John Deere green but then I saw a can on your shelf full of paint. It would have been a lot easier before installation and that heat shield need pait if for no other reason to keep it from rusting. As an auto mechanic, these things would have all been painted.
