Dynoing a 4020 Turbo and an 11,000-hour 4230- New Project Announcement

Today, Jake and I decided to run a couple tractors on the dyno.
The first tractor we dynoed was a 4020 with every M&W option they offered back in the da, except the M&W pistons. Included on this tractor is the M&W turbo kit, the extra capacity oil pan, and EGT probe and gauge. With the turbo kit, the 4020 pumped out an easy 120 horsepower!
The second tractor we dynoed was a 4230 diesel. This tractor has been on the farm for a couple years, and although most of the hours were not put on it by us, the tractor just turned over the 11,000 hour mark. After running it on the dyno, the tractor managed 115 horsepower.
The plan is as follows: rebuild the engine on the 4230, including high compression pistons, install an M&W turbo kit, and dyno the tractor again to see how much horsepower we gain from all the work. The tractor is also going to get a paint job, and hopefully be ready for Rantoul in late August.
Thank you for watching, and at this point reading, and I will see you on the next one!

When I was 10 years old (in 1975), my dad turned me loose on a 1964 4020 Powershift with a fresh overhaul and an M&W turbo kit pulling a five bottom, sixteen inch John Deere semi-mounted plow. It was late November, near Thanksgiving, so I was plowing at night. Dad was running a 3020 with a four bottom mounted plow. I'll never forget that night. It was the first of many long days and nights working the ground. I don't farm much anymore, since I'm a consulting mechanical engineer, but I still have a small place -- and a 1966 4020 Synchromesh. The 4020 was the best tractor ever made. Period.

Had a turbo charged 1966 4020 with power shift. She had around 120 hp. The biggest issue was we should have put a larger radiator on it because it would overheat. That wasn't a problem you can drop a gear when working if needed.

I put a turbo on a 4230 years back . Used turbo, manifolds and piping from a 4520. Perfect bolt up and fit , and the hole in the hood was perfect for a 4 in pipe. Ran it at 140 hp for 4400 hrs, sold to a neighbor and its still going.

My dad bought a brand new 1965 4020 with the standard shift trans and a 5 bottom plow, I was 6 yo - never forget it, my older brothers and I crawled all over that tractor for hours that night! Probably 10 yrs later, installed the M & W turbo kit with that same straight pipe, primarily to pull the 2 row Fox chopper. We also had a 'year round' cab installed - boy that beat the hell out of those plexi/canvas 'weathershield' on the cold VA winters back then feeding the cattle. On dark morning, riding with my older brother, pulling a 216 loaded chuck wagon up a pretty good hill on one of the county dirt roads in 8th gear, brother said watch this and he floor boarded the throttle as an orange flame grew about 8 inches tall out of the stack and burned the chrome off! If the old man new about that sh*t he'd would of burned our asses!

In 1977 I bought a new JD 4040 Quad-range diesel (404 ci) with the understanding that the dealer was to put a turbo on it and give me regular new tractor warranty. Before the instal I asked the shop foreman if he’d dyno it for me which he did. With the new turbo installed, the shop foreman contacted me to ask how much hp I was wanting so he could set the fuel. I told him not to reset the fuel. Leave the pump factory stock and dyno it again. Without the turbo it dynoed 92 hp. With the turbo to dynoed 135 hp! With the same fuel setting. So from then on I’ve advised my friends not buying a diesel without a turbo. They’d be wasting fuel if they did.

The coal mine had a 4640. Hard starting cold weather even plugged in. The starter spun slower than other tractors. We converted the two 6 volt batteries in series to two 12 volt batteries in parallel. Solved the problem. Spun like other tractors. Started much easier. On paper two 6 volts have more amps but one battery has to go through other battery which makes me think all amps cannot be used effectively??

    The formula is HP X 5252 ÷ RPM = ft.lb. of torque. If the PTO is 540 RPM and it's running at 120 HP, it'd be 120 X 5252 = 63240. 63240 ÷ 540 = 1167 ft.lbs. If it's 1000 RPM, it'd be 120 X 5252 = 63240. 63240 ÷ 1000 = 630 ft. lbs. As you can see, at 540 RPM, 120 HP is quite a bit of torque, 1167 ft. lbs. of torque is pretty rough on shafts and U-joints where 1000 RPM is a bit easier on them.

Why don’t you try to buff that 4230 out they are only original once

We definitely could but it has quite a few rust spots, and after going through the motor and adding the turbo kit we will want it painted anyway. I am hoping this one makes it to Rantou!

Nothing wrong with that I’m just a sucker for all original myself but a nice paint job is fine too. I’d love to find an identical to that one or put a convertible front on a 4040 open station PS or quad

Why on earth would you install high compression pistons and a turbo? Better not pull it too hard for extended periods of time.
