4230 M&W Turbo Build - Dyno Day!

The day a lot of you guys have been waiting for, me included! We buttoned up the 4230 M&W Turbo Build a couple videos ago and finally got it back down to the dealership to throw it on the dyno. If this is your first time here, this 4230 was an 11,000 hour tractor when we drove it into the farm shop. It received a complete overhaul, including new injectors, high-compression pistons, and a sweet M&W turbo kit. The goal for this tractor was to squeeze as much horsepower out of a "stock appearing" 4230. We certainly could have used a P-series injection pump, intercooler, and bigger turbo to push it to its limit, but that was not the original goal. We wanted to make it as if a farmer in the 70's wanted a little more power out of his tractor, so he bought a turbo kit and turned up the fuel. This set up makes the tractor a treat to drive, and the bump in horsepower is noticeable. Before running this tractor we ran my 5020 on the dyno and that will be featured in another video. When swapping out tractors, we forgot to switch the dyno setting to a 4230, and therefore got a false reading. As cool as that would have been to have 160 horsepower out of a 404 cubic inch engine, it wouldn't have near the longevity we would like to see. After changing the setting we managed to get 135 horsepower out of the old girl. All in all, we are happy with this number. Certainly this 4230 is capable of much more, but this will do. Thank you for taking the time to watch this video, and maybe you will check out the entire build series I did on this tractor. Thanks again, and I'll see ya on the next one!

Seeing this rebuild may help me like a 4230 again. My cousin had one a long time ago, and I had a love/hate relationship with that tractor. I loved to hate it...lol.

I started working for a Deere dealer same time 30 series came out. Sound Gard cab was light years ahead of the competition, some never did catch up. The engine were a little weak. The 40 series were a much better all round tractor. Will be nice tractor when you get it all done.

It would have been very cool to witness the 30 series come onto the market! The first new John Deere Grandpa sold as a Deere dealer was a 4430, and that same tractor is sitting in the shed today 👍

That's how we finished our rebuilds. Fire it up, make sure fluids stay contained. Straight to the dyno. Absolute minimum idle time. Not looking for a power number at that point. We just wanted full load, full boost for 20 minutes. Idle it down, let it cool off. Next morning head re-torque. Oil & filter change. Sheet metal back on. Then if we were looking for a power number we would make pump adjustments on the dyno again. We found engines we put through that break in process made the same power for more hours with less oil consumption, and less blow by.

Extra horsepower in a given size tractor is always ok until you overload the PTO or drivetrain. As a mechanic, I’ve seen the results of 150hp 4020’s and 806’s. Same size tools a gear faster and a little less throttle=fine. Add extra weight, bigger tires and pull bigger equipment=scattered drivetrains. No matter the brand.

What "settings" do you change on the dyno for a 4230 vs a 5020? We had a 4230 that started popping out of gear going downhill with a load behind. Traded up to a 4240 and never looked back!

In your words the 11000 hour engine turned 115. And the fresh engine with turbo and high compression pistons only turned 125. Any chance the dyno wasn't dailed in right for the first test? I am enjoying your channel. Not trying to stir shit. That first dyno test number just seemed high.

It was set right for the first run, that is for sure. We ended up getting 135 horsepower out of the tractor after all the work on it.
