    It was most likely a planned bombing run not a random one because there is otherwise no reason to waste precious resources bombing an already ruined and empty city. The German sniper's plan was to lure the Russians out and drop bombs at random to hopefully get either get a lucky kill or as shown in this scene, to freak out the Russian snipers into exposing themselves thinking that the bomb run was random when in reality it was not, the Luftwaffe most likely had orders to not hit that particular building that the German sniper was in

    I think that in this scenario if I was a German general or commander who was hunting Russia snipers in buildings I would just call in a airstrike/bomb attack on certain buildings that were almost demolished but not all of it aka the perfect place for snipers to pick off my troops so I would order the bomb planes to bomb half standing buildings to draw out weak,scared,hungry,emotional snipers out of their hidden spots and I would snipe them easily! That’s what I think this German sniper was doing the exact same thing as I would because fear always gets someone killed in war!

    Yes it was the only way they could hit soviet positions with any kind of accuracy since they were right up close and personal with the Germans, As for AA the East bank was heavily protected with AA and fighter cover but the city itself had been burned and bombed into ruins, any real prepared positions had been destroyed within the first few weeks of the battle and bringing in anything bigger than a small anti tank gun wasn't really in the cards as it could easily be destroyed once the Germans figured out where they were. AA guns of ww2 were big and took time to set up or to break down and move making them easy targets for planes or troops on the ground, the soviets did have some AA around the docks and landing areas the try and protect their supply lines and they did shoot down a few planes here and there but not in any serious numbers like in Moscow or Leningrad

    No. There where no bombing runs by the Germans on Stalingrad once they entered the city and the righting took place inside the buildings. Particularly not at this low attitude. Bombing Soviet Positions and city by the Luftwaffe continued till late 1942 as the operation to encircle Stalingrad took place by the German army. But once the fighting inside the ruined city began and the Germans started to get into the center of the city it stoped. The risk of hitting own units was to grave. And once the Soviets started their counter offensives where they encircled the German army trapping them in Stalingrad most of the airforce was bussy supplying the troops and evacuating the wounded.

    My first question is why was the Luftwaffe expending all of that ordnance on an abandoned town that was already destroyed? Secondly, if the bombers were attempting to flush out Russian snipers, did they know there were German assets conducting counter sniper operations in the same battlespace?

  • @RichardTaylor1800

    @RichardTaylor1800

    2 жыл бұрын

    Answer to the first question: the Luftwaffe bombed the living shit out of Stalingrad before and during the battle. It wasn't abandoned, there were actually a lot of Soviet soldiers and civilians in the city throughout the battle. If this is a realistic scene (been years since I've seen it, so I can't recall if it is or isn't), then the Germans were just carrying out their daily air raid to demoralize the enemy and maybe kill a few of them. Ironically, in real life these bombing raids benefited the Soviets: the buildings that survived the bombings were turned into strong points surrounded by no-man's-land of rubble. Also, one thing I do recall about this movie is that it unrealistically shows Soviet soldiers doing human wave attacks in Stalingrad. That tactic had pretty much been abandoned by this point of the war, especially in cities: the Soviets were expert street fighters, and a lot of the tactics they figured out and used in that city are taught in CQB training to this day. Answer to the second: they wouldn't have known. If it was just a daily bombing raid and there happened to be a few German snipers lurking in the city, I doubt they would have cared. The level of organizational complexity required to launch tactical bombing raids for individual small units wasn't something that really existed in Stalingrad: it was a rather confused and chaotic situation. Basically, if you were a German and didn't want to get bombed by your own planes, you'd better make sure you were within the established German lines, such as they were, at the time of the bombing raid. Otherwise you were taking a big risk.

    @@RichardTaylor1800 That is a 5 star explanation for my 2 star question, many thanks. I do recall reading now that Stalingrad was never formally evacuated, and became the mother of all MOUT battles. With the long and fragile supply lines facing the Germans at Stalingrad, I'd have thought they would be frugal with ordnance and gasoline, but as you inferenced, command and control would be disjointed all over the place, resulting in innumerable random events.

    This movie would have been way better if they used Russian speaking actors with English subtitles. I don't even speak Russian, but it sounds ridiculous having actors with English and American accents playing the parts of Russian and German soldiers. They might as well use Chinese and Nigerian actors if they're going to do that.

    I think in this case using English doesn't really matter that much - simply imagine they speak Russian instead. However, having Chinese or Nigerian actors playing whatever parts in this movie wouldn't definitelly make any sense/would look ridiculous. In general, I think this is a really good movie and especially Bob Hoskins had a hell of a performance in it. Btw. I highly recommend another movie "The inner circle" (one of the rare US-USSR co-productions) where he excellently portrayed infamous Lavrentiy Beria...

    @@Tehui1974 if a film is produced in a country ten you only really have 2 choices. Native language or native speakers doing to settings accent (in very rare cases some actors can do other language's). It's would be almost impossible for an English or Frnch director to direct Russian actors well due to the language barriers. Now you could argue don't make the film but ask yourself, which is a better film this or the Russian 3d one. Obviously the Germans made the only true Stalingrad masterpiece but that's a German film about a German perspective.

    At this stage in the fight where the German military actually entered the city there have been no more bombing runs. The Luftwaffe continued to bomb Soviet positions till late 1942 as support for the campaign to encircle the city. Once the German army actually started to enter the outskirts and get inside the city center most of the aerial bombing stoped. So what you see in this scene is pure fantasy and fabrication. Even artillery wouldn't always be used in such situations because the accuracy of those weapons was not comparable with what can be achieved today. The moment when the fighting units would actually get so close that they could shoot and see each other (including snipers) most heavy artillery would cease their fire. Including aerial units. A lot of what you see in this movie is exagerated for dramatic effects. Most of the heavy weapons would be used before the actuall attack to soften the positions and demoralise the defenders. But once the assault begings heavy artillery is pretty much out of the question unless you have something with a more direct fire support like self propelled assault guns. It is one of the pecuilar reasons why the fighting in Stalingrad was particularly vicious as far as WW2 goes. Most of the fighting inside Stalingrad from late 1942 till early 1943 took place at relatively small ranges and from building to building including the severs which the Germans called "Rat War". It often ended up in very close engagements with units regularly fighting in hand to hand combat. Something which surprised the Germans as they didn't meet this kind of resistance before.
