Endurance: How A Stranded Crew Survived 2 Years In Antarctica | Great Adventurers | Absolute History
Earnest Shackleton's expedition to the Antarctic departed on December 5th, 1914. This would be The Endurance crew's last contact with land for 497 days. What followed became one of the most miraculous stories of bravery and resilience in human history. Shackleton will always be remembered for saving his men, stranded at the ends of the earth, with "not a life lost".

Interesting video, but it always surprises me how these Shackleton documentaries seem to hardly mention Frank Worsley. If not for Worsley's navigation abilities and seamanship in the lifeboat "James Caird" none of them would have survived. Shackleton certainly deserves his place in history for holding them all together, keeping their spirits up and making the decisions he made, but in the end it would all have been for nothing without Capt. Frank Worsley's amazing seamanship. I always think that should be more recognized than it ever seems to be.

I credit Frank Worsley also, nis seaman ship saved the day. Can you imagine taking a sexton sighting without only a glimpse of the sun and a pitching rowboat....Shackleton was an egomaniac desperately fleeing his loveless marriage...
These men were made of different stuff then most...to come out of that journey alive only to find the world destroyed by war. A truly amazing account of endurance indeed!

What a remarkable journey for your grandfather. Thank you for sharing it.
No matter how many times I hear this story, I am always amazed by the absolute driving sheer will to live of these men! Absolutely strong!
My father was part of the ANARE group and spent a year at Mawson and Davis in 1969. We lost my Dad April 2023 and watching this makes me remember the many books he had collected over the years about Shackleton,Mawson and Scott. Great watch, and I reckon it’s time for me to start reading about these courageous explorers, along with my dads written memoirs. Thanks for posting.

Men of true grit. Respect!
I remember when we did a unit study on the antarctic explorers just thinking how unutterably mad they would have to be to put themselves in that position! Yet thank goodness they did because in sharing their journey with us, we get to be armchair explorers! All the excitement and none of the risk 🤣

One man among just under 2 billion people that populated the planet. From one country with the resources and ambition. This one man assembled an expedition to a place only a handful of people even knew existed. He and his crew accomplished their goal, lost almost everything and through the crews knowledge and his leadership survived. No woke agenda, no toxic masculinity, no pronouns, no internet, no save the planet agenda. Just pure wanderlust and determination to do something memorable that would be talked about for hundreds of years. Thank you for your time and effort to bring this story to life, making it available for all.

That the British kept on with man hauling and couldn't bear to run down and eat their dogs is endearing if a bit foolish. But it is in line with the Anglo-American love of dogs. That oates walked out into a storm to die because he knew his comrades would not leave him otherwise shows great humanity. In wartime such an action would get him a Medal of Honor or a Victoria cross.

Sadly, commercial mining and drilling in Antarctica is prohibited. Not that it matters much. The average depth of the ice sheet is over a mile, so almost no resource is worth the expense of simply extracting it. Oil and natural gas may be possibilities one day, but for now, we've got oceans of the stuff in far easier places to access.
