The Extreme Challenges Of Antarctic Exploration | Ice Eagles | Spark

Ғылым және технология

The Ice Eagles project focused on scientific exploration in Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year (IGY), a period from July 1957 to December 1958. Scientists from 66 countries, including 12 with stations in Antarctica, worked to understand the physical Earth and improve data collection methods. The project was not without challenges, which include extreme weather, dangerous conditions, and aircraft crashes, leading to technological advancements in aircraft design and navigation systems.
Over the years, Antarctic exploration has evolved into a collaborative international effort to study climate history and the impacts of climate change.

The things people like this went through for the sake of exploration is truly amazing! Not just this but all the exploration we have done throughout human history!

at 9:55 Capt. Rayburn Hudman dying on the ground while the morphine froze was my grandfather. Hearing his name and seeing him in video format was really weird since obviously I was born 21 years later of his passing.

In the early years of IGY one the vehicle used for transport in the snow-ice conditions was several modified M50 Ontos, the gun platforms were remove and they were lined 3" cork, a gasoline fueled heater was installed on the side of the crew compartment, if you look at a hull on the outside lower left rear you see Dimond shaped plate bolted over heater port., the Ontos had great traction mud and snow.

Re: November 28 1979 scene at McMurdo in front of Byrdf's bust and NSF Chalet, narrator comments on Senator Harry Byrd, Admiral Byrd's brother and Dr. Lawrence Gould. In fact the picture shows neither Senator Byrd who was Admiral Byrd's nephew (NOT brother) or Larry Gould. I have a complete Powerpoint show of the 50th anniversary commemoration in Antarctica and can provide accurate pics and narrative. Robert Byrd Breyer, Byrd's grandson, construction camp manager at new Dome South Pole Station 1973-75, and participant on 50th anniversary commemoration.
