For me, Betty Buckley is the definitive Margaret. Some of it has to do with the stunning arrangement, but for the most part it’s just her singing; she has so much power in her voice that makes this song so terrifying. Even in some of the softer songs (the Carrie Reprise at the end, especially) there’s something slightly unnerving about her voice, which just makes the character. Yeah, she kind of plays it over-the-top, but that works for this show and this character.

None of them are better than each other! They are all their own! Maureen sounded nervous in talking to God. Barbra sounded like a helpless plea to God! Marin sounded like a frightened woman speaking to God. Betty sounded like she was begging and even almost demanding God to help her daughter. Marin sounded terrified and you saw her reliving the moment she had when she was younger. Anne seemed like she was mad a God while asking him. Alice was really reliving her own experience as was feeling what Carrie was feeling. She knew that it was going to be okay when she was asking him. Misty, I'm not sure with her tbh. Kim sounded like a plea and cry for help. All of them extremely different...it's kind of unfair to compare them. They are all unique as actors and singers

What a great deconstruction this is! You've really thought about Margaret as a character and about all the different actress and their particular portrayals of her"

I was really on board for Anne until she did that ridiculous growl before the final belt. It seemed so out of character and diva.

I like that the Kim Criswell version added back the creepy bell tolling from the original 1988 version.

Strange. I saw/heard a number of recent productions that removed it.

The sheer power of Betty Buckley in this song is astonishing. It's the only one to stop me dead in my tracks. The only characterisation to actually match the tone of the story. Barbara Cook's rendition was so lifeless. It just sounds like a pretty song from her.

I love these comparison videos and choosing my favorites, but having only seen Marin Mazzie live, I know that her performance was more powerful in person than how it comes across on video (RIP Marin). Betty is my favorite though. I just listened to Marueen's full version from the 1984 workshop and she had some great moments that aren't featured here. She would have been a great Margaret! I would have loved to have seen Alice live. All the ladies are talented!

I like the lower key as it feels a bit more guttural vocally, but the higher key's orchestration is much better. It's not all just loud and fast, there's a lot of contrast, especially at 'father don't forsake her' the high chimes almost feel too pretty, it's creepy

i saw Barbara in concert twice - once when she was in her 60's n then wheelchair-bound at 80 yrs old. Her voice was thrilling though in her 80's she said she wasn't able to hit her high notes anymore, though her musicality was incredibly beautiful.

Barbara Cook.... Hands down..... wish she would have done a cast recording. Only thing I wish she would of done differently is instead of staying on the same note for the final note hit a higher note.

There's just something about Alice's performance that really breathes life into Margaret's character in my opinion. I think it's because she draws out the finale of the song longer than the rest of them, which really allows us to take a moment and reflect on the fact that she is just so scared. She's had this happen to her, and now it's happening to her beloved daughter. She is so desperate for the Lord to protect her little Carrie. She brings so much pain and fear into the song, and I absolutely ADORE it.

I completely agree, she definitely took Margaret somewhere different that I hadn't seen any other actress do with her. The way she performs, be it Violet in Side Show, Diana in Next to Normal, Fantine in Les Mis, or anything, she just loves and BREATHES the character and it's so incredibly thrilling to watch.
