Thank you for the opportunity to hear all these gifted performers. I love these sort of comparisons! I am biased. I saw Betty 5 times in London in the role and think she was magnificent: her growl on ‘look’ always catches my breath! I also saw Elaine who was more akin to Glenn’s interpretation of the role though her holding of the final note is outstanding. Betty demonstrated the slinky seductive yet classy characteristics of silent stars. I always feel sorry for Patti. I also saw her in London and she was hampered by a production which wasn’t fully formed, felt rushed, and the finale was lame compared to the revised production which opened with Betty. So for me, it’s Betty, followed by Elaine, Glenn and Diahann. The others also have great qualities, including Petula who struggled with the role but does hold the final note brilliantly. The only one I’m not keen on is Linda. On a separate note, imagine if there had been a movie made with Streisand in the role! There is a missed opportunity!

I love Kat's version but Megan's delivery of the line "there are some in this world who have strength of their own, never broken or in need of repair; but there are some born to shine who can't do it alone, so protect them and take special care" brought tears to my eyes.

Here’s this devil explained in a few sentences. Used to webber to get her first job of substance and talked crap about him. Didn’t get the Tony award and talked crap about the nomination process. Boycotted shows right in front of the theater where young actors are just trying to get their start because they weren’t union. Turned around and said the union was garbage so she dropped out. Basically in short, she’s wishy-washy stands for nothing and if she doesn’t like your shoes that day you become the devil. She was talented when she first started she turned in garbage as she got older. She realize she lost all relevancy and respect so she turned to be in a loudmouth . Her voice is weak, her acting as weak as well as her person. No idea everybody loved her and Company. Her shrill voice hurt my ears. She really has just turned to garbage. she’s just garbage.

Katherine's Marilyn represents a possible Marilyn people would've wanted to see more of: the innocent Marilyn, an assumption of her inner feelings, like an unknown Marilyn. Megan's Marilyn is rooted in the more well known public Marilyn. A logical and well educated hypothesis based on research.

@steventownsley67633 ай бұрын
Very, very, very hard to do! Easier to flatten it closer to an ‘a’ vowel! Which is why many singers rarely belt an E to hold for a long time! Particularly for 8 shows a week!

They both are tremendous!!! Meghan has more of that dramatical impetus. Although Katherine's voice is a tiny bit less edgy, she takes a few more inflective liberties in the turns she puts in. Truthfully, I could listen to both equally all the time. Although I've never heard Meghan vocally tired, because she uses more of her voice all the time, she could be in danger of pushing it too far. Non the less, they are both great vocal technicians!!!

I liked the build around McPhee's version. There was more reference to who Marilyn was in the visuals instead of the menace of the men around her in the darker Hilty version. I really loved the pop in the McPhee version where she raises her hand and people responded and the final visual of the real Marilyn behind her. That was far more striking than the men clearing the stage for Hilty's final money note. Character wise, I think McPhee captured more vulnerability. Hilty's drama was more offstage as written. (Doesn't help that I heard stories about HIlty in the musical of VANITIES, not being kind to crew backstage in Mountain View but that was 2007.) This is a hell of a song & altho Bombshell is coming to Broadway, I think they could do a separate version of SMASH! SO MANY GREAT songs in the series that didn't deal with the musical or could tie in - see them being workshopped and changed in SMASH and the real thing in Bombshell. Same team wrote everything so why not book them both at the same time into different theaters?! What's that? Money? Get the tv company involved that put the series on! I know, I know. It's not that easy, nothing ever is with theater if it's worth something.
