Teach a guy to breathe with his stomach, not with his collarbone.

Ah-ha! Please see my extensive breathing videos, Browne On Breathing! Also, look closely and you will find many, many highly sucessful pop, musical theatre, opera singers that use clavicular breathing (upper chest) and it doesn't seem to harm them. I personally favour abdominal breathing for many reasons and have put the time in to establish it (and make videos on it) but I no longer force it on my students, in the spirit of don't fix what ain't broken.

@@AntonBrowne I didn't like the lack of support in your student's singing. Yes, there are singers whose use of the diaphragm is not explicitly expressed. But these are isolated cases, very rare, when talent dominates technique. Breathing is the basis of singing. It is wrong to sing without support on the diaphragm. I recommend teaching this to everyone. In the future, if a student turns out to be a genius, talented vocalist, one in a million, and feels that it is more convenient for him to use his collarbone, he will do it, it will be a balanced choice of a super-professional. But now they need the basics.
