This episode was really interesting. It was very clear how much armor he had on, and it was also clear that he was listening to you guys, which is huge, because at first it seemed that the words were never going to get in, but eventually they did, and this shift was beautiful to watch. This podcast is very moving and, as a woman, I feel so grateful that you guys are doing this. You are changing the world, and I am incredibly grateful for that. Thank you.

That's funny. I didn't get that impression at all. He was pretty authentic and only failed to come up short.

So much of this was uncomfortable, but man that breakthrough at the end was worth every minute. I can think of so many men in my life that are just like him and I typically find myself being annoyed by them, but it really softened my heart towards the battle men are facing with always being put together and feeling like they never have the room to express or even have emotions. This was so informative. I adore this podcast and what you all are doing here, thank you ♥️

It was incredible to see someone who’s so accomplished in their professional life, so shut down in their mind and heart. One of my favourite episodes EVER

The way Emmanuel ended the podcast being able to verbalize the insecurities and doubts that he has turned into the foundations of his confidence, the character he presents, and his career was absolutely beautiful. I love how, slowly, he was able to take off parts of the rusty armor off to show a sensitive side that is still himself. Still that ambitious person who wants to change the world. Truly one of my favorite episodes. The way it felt so unplanned, so real, just a conversation start to finish and not an interview was wonderful.

****I’m only a quarter into this at the time I’m writing this comment: His fear of failure, over-calculating every step, black & white sense of self and very obvious insecurities that are masked by false confidence are so tied to the way men are taught to see themselves in the church. Especially as a pastors kid, I think all PK’s have so much pressure on them as kids and his responses said that so clearly to me. I really appreciate how Liz, Justin, and Jamie are moving through this conversation so far.

I think I'm around the same part that you were at the time of writing this comment and totally agree. I also find it interesting that he is using his "intention" as a shield as if it's okay to do the wrong thing with the right intention...which is in conflict with some of the things he talks about in his own series.

PK here 👋🏽, you’re 100% correct. We are expected to be an extension of our parents ideology and know THE answers to the biggest ideas in the universe at a very young age. That expectation creates a culture of certainty rather than exploration, questioning, and vulnerability.

I know so many PK’s in my personal life and there is something so disingenuous about the lens in which they see themselves and the world it’s always been very strange and hard to connect with them. I think it’s interesting that you say PK’s are seen as an extension of their parents because that’s very common in narcissistic parents and though it’s probably an expectation from pastors with the best intention, no one talks about how abusive and damaging it is to children to have that pressure on them at such a young age. Edit: I realize now that you said PK’s are expected to be an extension of their parents ideology which points to the culture of certainty. That point was interpreted wrong by me due to my bias (I’ve got a narcissist dad) so, sorry about that!! Haha :)

@@neophotic and as we see in Mr. Acho, it causes a lot of coping with the fear that is instilled in them. That coping can take on many forms but it breaks my heart to see a man so convinced of his own confidence when, on the outside, it’s clear he is just trying to survive & find safety.

I was so curious to see where the hosts would take the conversation after he introduced himself as "one of the most confident individuals on the planet". So interesting to hear him point out all the defense mechanisms that his ego has set up because of his fair of failing in this patriarchic society. Kudos to the hosts for getting him to open up the armor a tiny bit and see his light shine through in the end. I loved the compassion and vulnerability conveyed in every sentence and question. Ditch the logical plan and follow the scary happiness plan, Emmanuel 🥰

Emmanuel Ocho is such a well put together guy who is rooted in faith. You all had a time busting through his armor and I think you only made a small crack. He is just a well disciplined person and he will have to take time and process your questions alone and reflect back on his life. He totally is man enough.

I dare say that the over-calculation approach *IS* the effects of toxic masculinity. Add layers of trauma on top of that and the guardedness makes sense. I relate to Emmanuel on the guardedness front but for/from different reasons. I admire him for hanging in this convo and for inching towards vulnerability in what I can imagine are very new ways at very new depths. I appreciate these conversations so much. Keep going. ✨

I came REALLY close to turning this off very early, but I'm so glad I didn't. This ended up being by far one of my favorite podcast episodes ever (of ANY show). I love how patient, yet persistent they all were. When people act as if they have it all together and are super confident, there's always something to be discovered underneath (and it's usually related to fear on some level). Great job. Oh... and Justin saying "You can't have fear and love at the same time. One's gotta win" just caused a major shift for me. I had to rewind it back three times. THANK YOU!

This was a tough episode. And I don't mean that negatively. It is a real reflection of this process, and an example of "arriving" in one area, doesn't mean you've "arrived" in all areas. And that it's not necessarily bad. We all love the Emmanuel Acho on his shows and what he brings. But Emmanuel needs to reach that scary place, where he allows himself to be loved for everything else he is, too, even the "weakest" parts.

I just listened to this after listening to the season finale because, like y’all, I was very impressed by Uncomfortable Conversations With A Black Man when it came out and listening to this… I was frustrated. I thought he’d have been more insightful doing all the good work he does, but it just goes to show how deep that vein of hurt runs where masculinity is concerned. I’m glad you guys pushed! I felt that shift at the end and it was awesome to watch. So often we hear these speakers and while some are very transparent in their journeys, others you don’t hear from in that way and the messages begin to sound fake because they don’t sound rooted in experience or reality. Thank you for digging ☺️

Loved the place they finally got to and so proud of Emmanuel for being real about how he felt. As a woman I was understanding of the conditioning he has had as a man to place himself in the best light and stand in the work he has done and how he has been able to grow but I was disappointed that he couldn't feel into his heart. But then he got there and it was beautiful. This was how I wish the Matthew McConaughey interview had gone. Thank you Justin, Jamey, and Liz for honoring people where they are and helping to plant seeds to move them further than they ever thought possible.

Wow, what a great episode. I wasn't expecting this at all after watching the promo clips. (I love my Monday night's in NZ listening to this podcast) I love being introduced to new people that you talk with. Emmanuel really does reflect what it takes to succeed in the patriarchy, and he's so dynamic and charming. The moment this conversation really hit me was when he said "I feel weird". It was such a palpable shift. And yes, you could feel his presence in the room after that, he was more grounded, and he had an openness to let people in, even if he didn't like it. You three have such a gentleness and kind way of exploring conversations with your guests, I think it really hit me tonight because you haven't really come up against so much armour on the podcast yet. You really are a testimony to the depths to which you have done the painful work in yourselves and to your commitment to wanting to see men heal.

This was so hard to watch in the beginning but it was so worth it. It was like for the first time a man that represented everything this podcast is trying to undefined came and they literally shed him to his true self. Amazing, so real and honest. Glad ge was able to hear all of it and hope he comes back after analyzing and doing some work on himself

Omgoodness, ya'll, this was BEAUTIFUL!! All 3 of you graciously held space and challenged Emanuelle simultaneously, this was poetry in motion to my ears. And Liz is the bomb!!

It's clear to see the journey all of the hosts have taken to get to this place of elevated conversation. I've watch nearly all of the episodes and felt myself smiling throughout this one especially as I saw incredibly honest efforts, full of integrity and humanity, to make real connection with another human being. Well done Liz. Well done Jamey. Well done Justin. Well done Emmanuel.

I don't think Emmanuel realizes that the scene he described of being alone in a field is instantly relatable. I got teary eyed and my heart sank because I could feel what he felt without even being there. I'll probably remember that imagery forever.

Liz's silence in this podcast is SO LOUD!! The way you all were able to respectfully challenge and question him was profound. witnessing the shift of Emmanuals presence from the beginning to the end is such a beautiful journey. Justin, I am quoting you in my thesis. Fricken AMAZING!

I feel like this was one of the more productive conversation because you can see that it really made Emmanuel think and reflect. I love that Liz points out in the recap that she wasn't sure if it'd happen (him coming out of his armor), because I think that's what makes this episode beautiful. I truly hope Emmanuel comes back with even just a fraction less armor than when he left to continue the conversation.

So freaking powerful. Challenging humans to be emotionally naked and embracing it.

To use Brené Brown’s phrase, “vulnerability hangovers” are a thing! I hope Emmanuel is gentle with himself after this convo.

This was my very favorite episode of Man Enough yet. It was so authentic and I respect and appreciate Emmanuel for putting himself in this uncomfortable conversation. He is so kind, and courageous.

at first i was like why he's being so defensive here but i came to understand that he wasn't there to meet my expectations he was himself andi had to accept and understand that. This episode helped me to be patient and accept people where they are. Hey i so relate to intellectualising my emotions i need a check up on that.

It's really about coming to the conversation with love and compassion. It's not about what you want to accomplish or wanting to change the other person; it's about wanting them to find a truth that liberates them and makes them able to love themselves and others more. That mentality makes it a lot easier to be patient and open.

This conversation got me. I hope Emmanuel Acho leaves this conversation knowing we connected more (at least I did)to the "unsure" and "doubtful Emmanuel at the end than the super confident (almost cocky it felt like) Emmanuel at the beginning

This one was eye-opening. Made me realize how much I instinctively intellectualize my feelings (probably out of fear of being vulnerable). When you're forced to be on all the time, it's hard to even know how you feel sometimes

I ' m catholic and I want to thank you so much Justin for reminding Emmanuel (meaning : God is with us ) that Jesus came to tell the world that the smallest are the greatest and that only Love shall dominate . You were all so honest and respectful to Emmanuel 's over-self confidence . Emmanuel Acho was obviously all shaken up . He did cracked his armor live . I felt so much compassion for him ! I came here looking to see other conversations being had with Mr. Acho because I haven’t been feeling what I have seen up to this point. This conversation humanized him for me. Thank you for creating a safe space for him.

Hey as a older woman I was so empowered by the whole conversation. He had already let his armour down, it's melting. He has many many years to learn the "real" world. Gosh, Emmanuel is quite different from the way he presents himself on KZread. This has been one of my favorite episodes. So many beautiful parallels and contradictions.

I truly didn’t appreciate how defensive and confrontational Liz was with Acho, while I can see her intent, I think there could’ve been more empathy on her part on more than one occasion. I felt uncomfortable with him being pushed sometimes to open up, after he explicitly expressed his lack of safety. With that being said, I so appreciate how Justin walked alongside Acho as he navigated this conversation, so patient and beautiful honestly. I LOVE his honesty at the end about how he was feeling, so so huge! & Justin and Jamey’s validation of him in response? 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 I hope Acho continues to grow in this and he does indeed find safety with himself. 🖤

This was such an amazing transformation to witness. The person with the armour isn’t wrong in their perceived truth but the guy at the end was so beautiful, present and human. We don’t need men to be strong and dominating. We need the Emmanuel that was softer and more open and willing to have the uncomfortable conversations. Respect to his vulnerability.

It was so interesting to watch this conversation. I loved how Emmanuel responded. This episode is a testimony to the fact that a shift in the mindset is possible.

Everybody should listen to this podcast weekly. This is a meaningful, impactful podcast that has a purpose beyond entertainment and we need more of this.

Wow y'all this was SO good. I appreciate y'all staying in the conversation without expectation all the way to the end. It was hard to sit through at the beginning because I could feel he was there "performing" for us. And that's so different from what I've come to expect from the podcast. The realization that Emmanuel had at the end that he felt uncomfortable not being in a place of dominance was gold. Like Justin noted, that person is someone that I could trust to hold some stuff. When the power of his charisma is linked to the ability to live with vulnerability like he did in that moment .... Look out. He will transform lives in a powerful way. As someone who has been in survival mode for my entire life, I felt this conversation. It’s the wrestling of the younger you, to the you now, to the bullshit that has happened to you, but faith that God has a plan. It’s takes time and the understanding and patience with yourself to dismantle your armor because the fear of getting hurt is truly truly paralyzing. The challenge is leaving fear and leading with love. This was such a relatable and needed conversation.

Im Nigerian- first generation- and I can say this is the uphill battle of cognitive dissonance I have experienced. A toxic positivity if you will- a shield. Ya'll fought a long road to find his vunerability and humanity that he needed to realize himself. So many men esp in this culture see pride for the outward and no tools to truly see self. I hope he really understands because we understand his humanity. This gives me hope. Justin I loved what you said about dominance and God. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS Justin, Jamey and Liz!

Thank you for joining us! We're so glad you're here. We completely agree that this episode epitomizes what we're doing here. What a journey - we see the transformation begin to happen right in front of our eyes, gently guided with compassion and patience. As much as we want to heal and change the world immediately, we know that won't happen, so we need to find a way to hold people accountable, challenge biases and move towards a different paradigm without alienating.

Love this so much! This was truly beautiful!

These words came to mind as I listened: smokescreen. ego. layers. deflection. exhausting. Waited for my heart to be reached (finally, in the end). With all due respect (to his intelligence, ethics, discipline, accomplishments, etc), his big body language, many words, run-on "quotey" host-mode (instead of guest-and-learner mode, aka humble), heady, mouthy, rambly answers seemed to be a smokescreen for: young boy afraid to feel, afraid to connect. Hope he let's time and wisdom from these 3 teach him true awareness, sensitivity, and humility. Because how much more wonderful and truly powerful (to heal and help) could he be! Bless you Emmanuel, may you live up to the true meaning of your name: "God with us."

Wonderful and important episode! It was like watching someone’s emotional growth in real time. I hope Emmanuel will watch this back several times and I hope he will come back on the show at a later date. It would be amazing to one day get guys like Will/Jaden Smith, Jay Z, Jeezy, even Lil Yatchy would be great, he is so articulate and open minded enough to have conversations like this 😊

So I am 17, and dudes around me have started dating and all but I haven't. Some girls are even approaching me but I am just avoiding all of them Because I am very very busy in building multiple careers so clearly I won't be able go spend time, go out etc. with the one. But when I see my friends hanging out, going out, spending quality time, I feel not being enough! I think, am I doing this right? Avoiding everything? But then I know, I won't be able to spend time, show affection, I won't be able to provide anything right now. I again feel I am not enough. This thought is very common among teenagers and it will go as I grow. But the fear of missing out on something or someone always bothers me. And this started to happen quite recently! Anyways! I just wanted to say this to someone. So I thought why not here where you are always welcome to have "AN UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATION" The robot thing which Justin said, Oh lord! Never thought of that but I actually strongly agree with it! As always, LOVE YOU GUYS ❤❤

What's that saying, If you want to go fast, go alone If you want to go far, go together (or something to that effect) There is something very fulfilling about having connection at all stages of our lives - it broadens your experience, often it allows you to be vulnerable because you are all at similar stages in life, it allows you to make mistakes and learn from others' mistakes (especially when you are young, because the world is more understanding and more forgiving of us not getting things quite right than later as adults). Ditto ME's reply - honour and fulfil your ambition and dedication to having a productive life, but don't let go of having a meaningful life. You will never be 17 again and have the chance to share that experience with 17 year olds again. Nevermind dating, at least enjoy and honour your friendships wherever they are :)

This was a powerful episode. I really felt this one.

To any regular listeners or first time listeners, hang in there. The first 20-30 mins are hard to get through because his armor is on so tightly, he cannot take it off. But as the conversation goes on, you can literally see Acho realize that he is finally in a safe place for men to be emotional and vulnerable and real. Minutes 38, 56, and 67 truly make it all worth it. To see the shift in him, and in the hosts as they see him relax and finally see that they are genuinely interested in the raw, imperfect Emmanuel. Also, it was so cool to see the men push him. I love Liz and she always adds a great balance and perspective, especially when men seem resistant or ignorant to their role in all this, but I love that it was mainly the men pushing and showing how to be vulnerable, so another man could be open and vulnerable too. It also warmed my heart that they were doing- living- the work. They could have easily left Liz to push and ask tough questions, and assume the gendered “enemy” role of getting the “big, strong man” to crack and be emotional, but I think it was that much more powerful to see men who have been in this rut, and who are doing this work, to push a younger man, who has not yet come into being his full, vulnerable self. ❤❤❤ Truly, one of my new favorite episodes y’all have done!!!!

I think by far this is one of my favorite episodes because he represents where a lot of men are in the process, learning about being human but not exactly putting it into action because we’ve already been super conditioned to show up in a certain way. I am so eager to see what he does with the emotional language and soul wisdom you guys gave him today so graciously. Although I did think all of you were a bit disappointed and he needed to hear that. You all admitted at the end you had an expectation and that expectation was not met for any of you, and that as far I’m aware is where disappointment is born. He was right when he noted that your body language shifted. We all felt how uncomfortable the entire conversation was for all of you even though all of your training just like his helped you to handle it well. For people like yourselves who have done the work, what you and myself included, don’t always do well is being patient with people who are entering the process. We have a slight bent that causes us even if only subconsciously to want people to be where we are. And that shows up in our body language, our responses, our tone and undertone. I think he is the reason that you guys have this show. He was more a patient than he was a contestant. Heaven chose him to get his healing card this day and he got served and I’m sure it’s going to uproot alot for him and he is going to need a brother to get through it.

This was an amazing episode. So many men are in his exact position that it’s so important to recognize what it looks like and when you rebound into your robotic self. When each time a question is asked that should bring out your emotional side leads to your brain responding with logic. I hope for that brother that he keeps feeling that not feeling man enough is being man enough. He may be at a 90 now and retract to a 60 while he learns to process his emotions, but when he does, he’ll hit 150-200 on the scale. And that’s when he’s really going to really enjoy life. Recognizing that helps me on my journey of being man enough, thank you.

Emmanuel Acho - I want you to know how much I genuinely appreciate the journey that you allowed yourself to go on in this experience. As God's child, you are ALL things - and as a woman who over-masculinized herself for many years (planning, calculating, etc.), I can now testify that union of all aspects of myself as God's child is offering me my happiest life. The introspective journey you referenced is AMAZING and so worth it, and I will be cheering you on as your sister as you walk yourself Home. 🙏Thank you for your willingness to be a catalyst for men/beings operating deeply in their masculine to release their armor. This was hard to watch, but I'm very glad I stuck till the end! From that beginning to this end? OMG!! Jamey, constantly telling him about that transparent glass wall (you could see him but it makes it hard to reach and touch him), Liz talked little but LISTENED the most and challenged him in ways he has never been before (that was super obvious), Justin constantly telling him something I'll paraphrase here as "I was there too, and I'm glad I'm out or at least on the way out. You should want that too"... You guys did freaking awesome and I'm sure he left amazed and grateful for the eye-opening conversation, I'm sure he shocked himself too because at first I thought he'd not open up but he did (even if just a little bit). Love you guys, Much appreciated you are 💜

As discomforting as it was to watch most of this I think what Jamey said was so important about just being able to see a man in process and to have the grace and compassion to accept and be patient with those who are just not there yet no matter what stage of progressing towards more mindful masculinity they are at. I agree with Liz that it was beautiful to watch the men just reaffirming and recreating that safe space for another man who doesn’t quite feel safe yet rather than making him be where they are. A part of me just wanted him to take the armour off immediately but I also very much appreciated waiting it out for the hour or so we had to get to that point where the real Emmanuel came out. It made watching the process of of performance to real presence so much more hitting and worth while. Thanks for yet another amazing podcast - I can’t wait to see Emmanuel come back and learn more about the many beautiful parts that make up so much more of the incredible man he already is.

It was quite a journey.

Just finished all the videos from this podcast and I have a few things to say... You are doing such an important job-THANK YOU! I'm writing a love letter to my husband because all of these conversations are helping me be more compassionate with him and think the many ways we will be better with our son (7) and daughter (5). As a therapist... I mean, hands down to talking openly about the mental health of men in this country and the impact on the mental health of women. We need more of that!! Thank you for the many reference you guys made in how therapy has helped you explore yourself more and I'm so freaking proud of the therapists who work with you all that allow you to publicly have honest discussions about gender, struggles, real love and the state of the world we live in now. And for this episode, my heart goes out to EA who worked really hard to put on his show but was unable to because you didn't let him. So gently, you walked next to him and pointed out the many ways "the show" and his need to control and all of the things he had "prepared", had to take the back seat. Then he was able to express how he really feels. You made the space safe for him and it gives me hope to know that there are more and more people willing to do that. KEEP-IT-GOING!!!

My initial response to this interview was anger. I felt as if he was ambushed. He did not look more confident at then end of the conversation. He looked defeated. The fact that he left this interview confused is why we don't tug at people's blankets. He didn't feel safe in this space. He watched everyone's body language and deemed it Not safe. The space was compassionate. It was super judgemental. He handled it well and based on the comments people loved it. So I guess, job well done. I believe in removing armor. This was aggressive and hard to watch.

I love this podcast so much

I'm a woman who feels deeply and has a fear of failure so I, too, like to plan like a robot. I actually resonated with a lot of things that Emmanuel said. I realized two things in my journey to self love and happiness 1) I was operating from a place of fear which has kept me from true happiness 2) the world would be better of ppl were more empathic. To be empathic means to be connected to your heart. By healing ourselves , we become better humans and we can truly make the world a better place for everyone
