Emma Chamberlain On Why Millions Of Subs Don’t Make You Happy

Today, I’m lucky enough to sit down with one of my favorite KZreadrs, Emma Chamberlain, to talk about what living the life of a KZreadr has done to her mental health. Along with being hysterically funny and a brilliant creator, Emma’s down to Earth and never shies away from being vulnerable with her audience. That didn’t change today, as she candidly talked about the feelings of isolation that most people don’t realize KZreadrs can face.
Check out Emma’s channel here: / @emmachamberlain

I'm so tired and feel so burnt out because of the constant speaking and noise. Worst part of it all i share a room with my sister. @S "The money might be great but that's kind of irrelevant unless you can get out with your health and mental well-being intact and lead a normal life with the proceeds." Imma just keep this quote for future reference. I know a lot of people looking into college and future jobs right now who are planning to kill themselves working towards a goal they have no passion for just because the paychecks are fatter than most. I myself was one of those until I realized how much I hated schooling/college and how expensive it was. It's not worth it to chase the dollar on a string if you won't be happy the entire time you're doing it.

That happens when you decide to expose yourself, it's not a hard thing to know, maybe for young people but that's the time when their parents have to take place and speak to them, so they can help them decide. Every activity has its own risks, it depends on you whether you are willing to take them or not, no one is forcing you to become a youtuber. As someone said, it's also part of living in this world, that's how it works. Wanna get a job? They have to like you. Wanna get a rise? They have to like you and think that you are capable. It sucks, I know, but they struggle a combination of being workers + fame, and a lot of people who doesn't even have the fame feel the same, i guess that’s just how or system is made.

I'm no where close to emma's subscriber level, but I went through some crazy ups and downs especially over the past year as I slowly transitioned into replacing my old job. And especially not having many friends it doesn't make it any easier. I've always used youtube as a way for me to open up, try new things, and force myself to be more spontaneous and have excuses to make life more exciting. I've learned so many new skills and had so many experiences because of it. But its really easy to let how well your channel/vids perform effect your mood. I always take my time if I feel like posting a vid or not. Sometimes I just don't feel it, but other times I will get into that flow state and have so much motivation, creativity, and not even see the time go by. And other times I will love a certain video idea, have fun filming it, but then I'll wait to edit and as the time goes by I just start losing motivation, feel it ain't good enough and struggle with finishing the video. But I also came to realize over the years that everything has its ups and downs. I feel like its important to have an ultimate self-fulfilling goal. Sure things are cool to grind for, but those intrinsic goals are sooooo nice.

Why I watch Emma chamberlain: she’s so real. Most people are putting on a show or making things seem better than they are, or being fake. Emma is real, honest, willing to just say what she thinks. I don’t wonder if she’s genuine. She’s herself and it’s so refreshing, that is so hard for some people. Love you Emma and dr mike. They are not like "reality TV" Stars who are so edited to looks a certain way to be entertaining. They are not only filming their content, they are not just staring in their content, they also edit that content, they advertise their content themselves... their success depends compleatly on them. Content creators are trying to be a perfect balance of all of those things. Its got to be stressful. Its got to be difficult and hard and unimaginable.

We humans lived in groups and evolved like that, then suddenly we have a technology boom and social apps making us isolate from family. I have seen my little nephews spend time on phone playing games, mother watching some cooking recipie in youtube then father watching something else / working. All this will happen in one room. People are in same house yet don’t talk to each other. Also living alone in an apartment contributes to depression and loneliness. Few of my friends took their own lives because of chronic depression despite seeking medical therapies. It’s hard to give a solution I think. Best thing will be to live with group of friends / family and not to over think about the future or the past.

This video isn’t about “trying to feel sorry for her” or “woe is me it sucks being a youtuber”. It’s about the importance of sharing the different experiences that different people go through in life and how specific experiences can have an effect on someone, especially someone’s mental health. If you are going through rougher experiences than her, they are also valid and are important to share. Sharing these experiences and problems help us to work on them, find solutions, and connect to others who might going through something similar. Financial instability can be a huge factor for someone’s anxiety and stress, and it is for millions of people. Yes, being financially stable can alleviate a lot of stressful factors in one’s life. There are parts of her that I can relate, such as the stress of being a creator/artist, but I know (and I assume she knows as well) that she, and Dr. Mike, have privileges that many people don’t have and/or aren’t going to relate to. At the end of the day, those who are struggling financially and those who have financial stability are not really going to relate too much on a financial level. But it doesn’t seem like she’s trying to do that here. This is specifically about someone in a career that a lot of young people want and Emma and Dr. Mike are expressing how it can take a toll on a lot of creators. They are providing incite on how youtube as a platform/business can be rewarding to be on but can also be very draining and demanding.

When you were talking about “flow” you made me think of something my therapist and I discuss often. Vocation vs avocation. I LOVE being in the dance studio dancing jazz, tap and ballet. I sometimes have to look DOWN to see cloud 9. BUT I’d hate to think of it as my job. Something that I HAVE to do. There is potential for joy to be sucked out of it.

This is why it’s so so good for creators to have some sort of meaning or purpose behind their content or outside of their content other than just vlogging their daily lives. The people who I watch that have an outside career or a deeper purpose to their content stay much more grounded and don’t seem to live in so much anxiety about their career suddenly crashing out of no where

100% know what you’re talking about. My 9year old wants to stream Fortnite videos. That scares me! Thankfully there’s an age restriction on a lot of platforms. Hopefully he grows out of wanting to do that. But at the same time. When he is of age. If he can partially support himself (news paper runs, mowing lawns walking dogs etc) I will support him in his ventures. We’ve spoken about it so he knows what to expect and what we expect until then.

It’s true that people don’t understand someone else’s struggles unless they face them themselves. You never know what someone might be going through. Everyone has their own struggles in life. So, it should be our responsibility to not make things harder for anyone by spreading hate. Please stop spreading hate! It doesn’t help anyone.

I legit felt like I was sitting in a therapy session with both Dr Mike and Emma. It was so cool to witness how Dr Mike's bedside manner shows outside of the hospital. You can tell he is a great doctor. I just know he's better than any doctor I've met from the way he actually listens to people and from how knowledgeable and passionate he is. I love that he educates others through videos, he's the best

I love this mental health videos. They make you feel included and a normal human just like every other human. I always had problems talking in front of a camera, or holding a speech, because I have a gut that tells me I can't trust anyone. I'm afraid of the lies that might be spreading, I feel fragile and made of glass if I'm surrounded by eyes I never saw. When I speak to people, I want to make eye contact, I want to make sure I can trust the one I'm talking to, cause you know internet or the wrong person is a good place for shading. When I'm holding a speech, when I'm speaking in front of a camera, I can't do that. I can't make eye contact with people, I can't make sure I can trust them. And I unfortunately found our about this fragile part of myself a bit late. So, when Emma said she felt analysed as a youtuber, I felt her from the bottom of my heart. I wanted to share my experiences, and I hope you understand that there's a great difference between being afraid of holding a speech and being too shy to hold a speech.
