    I don't know why people say the JB isn't tight enough for downtuned metal but every video sounds pretty tight to me. Great pickup.

    They probably have their setup EQ for ceramic high output pickups. I have a lot of active pickups in my guitars, and the only passive pickups that have worked for me are the black winters.

    I have different guitars with both of these pickup sets and they both sound awesome. I would say for rhythm guitar I prefer the Duncans and for leads I would definitely choose the EMG's.

    Both Duncans have a more organic tone than the EMG's. This is the second shootout I have seen with EMG's vs Duncans and I still go for the Duncans. And I was going to buy EMG's 81/85 for my new EPI 400 SG but after hearing the Duncan JB, Custom and 59 in different shootouts; I am going to get the JB/59 combo for my new Epi 400 SG.

  • @Gears9

    Passives have a rounder frequency with less attack giving them a natural low treble tone. With actives it's more likely you'll turn your tone knob 1/4 to 1/2 turn to round off the edges so to speak. At least for me, I came from passives and went to actives. Both are good, the rest is in how you setup EQ.

    I’d say the biggest difference is the compression, the EMG’s sounds a bit fatter but they’re way more compressed, I kinda prefer the more open sound of the JB/Jazz but they sound pretty close and it’d probably come down to personal preference for most people

  • @lhzx
    @lhzx8 ай бұрын

    For recording purposes, probably I would go JB as it's easier to compress it to make it sound 81 but not the other way around. I do like the compressed character of 81 though. Sitting in the mix well.

    I have both pickups on different guitars. I find the 81 is way hotter than the JB. For the JB, I have to use a pedal to drive the distortion channel on both the Rectifier and Katana in order to match how hot the 81 already is. Wonder if I did something wrong with the wiring. For the 81, I have the S&H configuration; while the JB is on an Ibanez with a five positions switcher. Any ideas why?

If you close your eyes you can hear the 81/60 is more compressed and in a lower range, while the jb/jazz has more high end to the notes and sounds open. Or if that doesn’t help listen to Ride The Lightning versus Peace Sells, that’s the difference between these two pickup sets
