EMG 81/60 VS JH HET SET! Installing James Hetfield Signature Pickups + Comparing To Classic EMGs!

Ойын-сауық

I have finally gotten a set of the EMG James Hetfield Signature JH Guitar Pickups and decided to make a video throwing them on and comparing the Het-Set to the classic EMG 81/60 set by playing a ton of my favorite James Hetfield riffs!

    Love the death magnetic representation 🤓. Also yeah they both definitely do the metallica thing. The Het set is slightly crunchier. I just think about how many iconic metallica albums were recorded with the 81/60 combo. I'd be happy with either tbh. First 3 albums were all passive humbuckers, so really any high output humbucker will get you close enough. That gold do be going good with the color scheme tho 👀

    I think the Het set does great bridging the gap between the Seymour Duncans on the first two albums and the EMGs going forward after that. Not that the EMG 81/60s couldn't play the first two albums perfectly, but I do think the tone is a tiny bit closer in the Het set.

    I've got this same LTD EC-1000, and since I saw Mike Schleibaum of Darkest Hour put a Het Bridge in his pro model, I've been considering updating. Getting to hear the comparison in my exact guitar is amazing! The gold is beautiful, and I love the sound of the Hets, so I'll definitely be making the switch!

  • @DenDenBMX

    EMG supplies you with everything you need to wire up their pickups into a guitar, however I didn't use any of the electronics provided because this guitar already had EMGs in it so I just used the quick connects to swap them

    I set mine pretty close to the strings, then back down a tad. These pickups are HOT... They clip the signal if I set them too high. About 1/8th inch from the strings give or take. A common misconception is that most emgs need to literally almost touch the strings. I.m.o that gives you a bit more treble/volume, but kills dynamics. You need a bit of air between the strings and the pickup. Don't get me wrong, I still set mine "high" just not high "est" if that makes sense. Good luck man😊

  • @DenDenBMX

    @DenDenBMX

    11 ай бұрын

    I have no idea how to describe the pickup height, I didn't measure. Since you've got it at a spot you like id say measure it and write it down then play around with the height and find a tone you like, and you'll be able to go back to square one if you need to start over. Although I believe pickup height doesn't actually make THAT much of a difference in the grand scheme of things

    EMG 81 to me is the holy grail for "modern metal" for better or worse, because I think it's just the most ubiquitously used on the foundational recordings in that time period. Anyone whose inspired by those guitar tones is chasing the EMG 81 tone no matter how far they try to run from this fact, and boy do they try to run. They will talk EMG into the ground... then turn on their favorite NWOAHM, Metalcore, or even Thrash/Power/Death metal song that is blaring EMG 81 tone front and centerr

    Sort of agree with your 81 thought BUT - didn’t het use an 85 in there, and who knows what they used in the studio?! Add in post production, and you’re quickly miles away from the raw sound. I owned a tri axis and a KH2 - certainly felt close to Metallica sound to me. AND who wants the het sound of now?! - thin and weedy.

    Quite a big difference, so you cant really say one is better as they are so different . The Het‘s got exactly that open dynamic and alive characteristic tone that the 81‘s lack of SOOO much. Tho the Hetset lacks of that cut-through tight low end of the 81s that would make you stand out more in a band/mix situation. For home use I would say the Hetset is a better allround choice for different sounds and playings. 81 just screams gimme gain, gimme chug, gimme riffs that i desire…yeah!

    Actually to hear the true sound of both sets you have to listen to them through a phone recording of you playing them both upside down through a 2007 line 6 spider at exactly 3:28am on the 3rd Thursday in June where the temperature is exactly 69° in an acoustically resonant Dillards family bathroom located exactly on the equator when the moon is in aeries and Uranus is in it's 3rd trimester right after it just rained and the guitars have to be tuned an open Æ chord strung up with the 6th string an ernie ball 58, 5th a didario 17, 4th a ghs 52, 3rd a Dunlop 32, 2nd an ernie ball paradigm 13, and the 1st a DR neon pink 8 with none of the string ends cut with the action just high enough that a newborn anaconda can fit easily through and you have to play Santana's rendition of whole Lotta love but 2 and a half steps up, and it must be listened to by a Polish albino orphan named Dickson Cider that has 72 teeth, toe-hands, no collarbones, and perfect pitch
