In today’s video we’ll be talking about …
A Fedex Federal Express Boeing 757-200 freighter, registration N977FD performing flight FX-1376 from Chattanooga,TN to Memphis,TN (USA) with 3 crew, was climbing out of runway 20 when the crew stopped the climb at 5000 feet reporting a minor issue requiring them to work checklists. About 15 minutes later the crew indicated they needed to return to Chattanooga and needed some time to run the checklists, no emergency was declared. Another 5 minutes later the crew reported they still needed time to bring the flaps down, then they would be ready for an approach. The crew reported ready for the approach another 4 minutes later and commenced the approach, advising they were having flight control issues but no assistance was needed. While on approach the crew requested to abort the approach advising they now had an unsafe gear indication. The crew subsequently indicated that after landing they would not be able to vacate the runway, they were able to lower their landing gear, and declared emergency. The crew subsequently requested a low approach to have the airport check whether the gear was down. Following the low approach both ground staff and tower reported they could not see any gear. Emergency services were alerted to a "no gear landing" at alert level 3. The crew advised they would be stopping on the runway and would evacuate, they had about one hour of fuel remaining. The aircraft positioned for a no gear landing on runway 20, then advised they wanted another orbit, approach clearance was cancelled. About 10 minutes later the crew intercepted the localizer runway 20 again and touched down about 85 minutes after departure but overran the end of the runway. Tower immediately closed the airfield when the aircraft touched down. There were no injuries.
Chattanooga's fire department reported: "Public safety agencies rushed to the Chattanooga Regional Airport late Wed night after receiving reports that a FedEx757 was on its final approach with a landing gear failure. The call came in at 11:04 PM on 10/4/23. CFD, CPD and HCEMS quickly staged in position and waited."

Well, except for the declaration of an emergency part. The ATC did that on their behalf as soon as they reported the “flight control issue”.

Having heard other ATCs speaking really quickly, sometimes to pilots who are not native English speakers (and not as fluent as Capn Joe!), listening to this one was a pleasure - circumstances not withstanding! He was so calm and clear, there was next to no chance of misunderstanding from him. It was an excellent example of how to be a top ATC! Great pilots too!

You could really hear the pilots voice change throughout the incident, the strain in it, once they realized what they are up against. But they stayed so calm and collected... What an amazing display of professionalism!
I'm halfway on the video and I have to say, this has been the very best video you've produced, Captain Joe! WOW! the checklist explanation and the care you've put on making this, really complements the backstory! well done!

Another great feature from ATC was relaying messages from Tower (Tower clears you...) allowing the pilots to focus on one controller and not having to switch back and forth between multiple frequencies at each critical stage of flight
The pilot took "FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE" to another level
My mom works as ATC in Chattanooga there and I have sat up in the tower a few times. Crazy to see this happen at this little airport! Glad to see the safe landing they made and that everyone made it out just fine.
Good to see you back in action Captain Joe. Yes, I like this format. As a pilot, I get the perspective of all parties with intelligent input. A good pilot is always learning.

Chattanoogan here, I’m incredibly proud of the response from the local emergency services, the training for an incident like this proved to be instrumental. Great job by all!
Superb video! Even thought I am a former flight attendant, I am a nervous flyer. Your videos have done so much to inform (and calm) me and give me the confidence that the crew at the pointy end want to safely get to where we're going even more than I do! Your videos have helped me become a much better flyer, especially on the ultra long haul flights. But this was your best video yet! Please do more vids about in flight incidents, your explanations really explain exactly what happened and how it was managed by the flight crew.

The pilots actually sounded like .... Yeah we do these no gear landings quite often.
I’m not pilot but the communication and understanding of the pilots and ATC was outstanding. Also great debrief Joe another good watch. Hats off to everyone involved amazingly handled situation

I appreciate the level of calmness the flight crew had as well as the prompt response from the ATC tower while handling the situation!
KZread comments system is pretty junk so you may not see this comment, however I'll post anyway on the off-chance you will. You say that the alternate system drives an electric motor which drives a hydraulic system which releases the hook to unlock the landing bay doors... Which of the three main hydraulic systems is that connected to, or is it an independent one? Early in the video, you hypothesised that their #1 hydraulic system was completely empty - could that also, possibly, lead to the landing bay doors not opening? And I watched the original upload by VASAviation the other day, I've been a subscriber of theirs for a few years now and I agree that they are indeed one of the very best ATC channels on KZread! Thank you so much for this collab and your pilot's eye view of what (may) have been going on that caused this accident. I look forward to hearing your conclusions when the NTSB report comes out.

Your video and that of Blancolerio are the best I’ve seen on this accident. He seems to think a complete loss of hydraulic fluid on the left side could be the culprit since neither the engine driven or electrical hydraulic pumps worked to get the gear down/released.

Nashville is the airport of choice for all of us living in the metro Nashville, Middle Tennessee and north Alabama area. It's usually cheaper, easy to drive in, easy to navigate, and I don't have to make the nightmarish drive to Atlanta!

At that point where the tower confirmed the gear wasnt down, I also got goosebumps. That would have been a heart-flutter moment for the Fedex crew. But huge Kudos to them and everyone for being able to remain calm and collected. Thats certainly not a situation any pilot ever wants to be in for such a large aircraft

Captain Joe, this is why i like the 737 so much, the manual gear extensions, are pull-cords, which connect directly to the uplocks if im not mistaken Most of the systems on the 737 are manually over-ridden systems, which means if you lose all power and all hydraulics, its no big deal, you could still fly the aircraft, it would be like flying an enormous piper warrior The control surfaces have manual cables from the yokes, the pitch control for the elevator can be done by turning the wheels mounted to the side of the throttle quadrant, and the gear can be extended using the pull-cords under the flap, in the floor, behind the main pedestal on the first officers side Doesnt this make the 737 the safest airliner to fly?

To an extent yes and no if the cables were severed or they broke then you have 0 control of the aircraft. Same applies to hydraulics.

@@MukisaSS yes of course, i have seen accident investigations where that happened, but say only a hydraulic leak and fuel leak, where it left 0 fluid in either, you wouldn't have any hydraulic controls, or electrical power, so no standard systems, no alternate systems, but you would still be able to fly, as long as like you said, the control cables were left intact I know some aircraft have a ram air turbine to provide electrical power and some hydraulics, but i know the 737 does not

Wow, even knowing no one was hurt, it's stressful listening to these calls. Almost eerie how calm they remained after the tower confirmed they had no gear, knowing that meant doing something extremely dangerous.

from the *Aviation Investigation Preliminary Report* "Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed that the left main landing gear door actuator retract port hose was leaking hydraulic fluid. The hose was removed and retained by the NTSB for further investigation. The examination also found a discontinuity in the wiring of the landing gear alternate extension system."
The 757 is a tank bit of speed tape she will be fine...hat's off the crew of this aircraft fantastic work
Excelent review. Thank you for not jumping to conclusions about the probable cause. As a 757 pilot, I have one small point to add, the item about avoiding large rudder imputs above 160 knots is due to the failure of the Rudder Ratio system (powered by the Left Hydraulic system) this item prevents excesive rudder deflections at high speeds, without this system, structural integrity of the Vertical Stabilizer could be compromised if too much rudder imputs are applied. All flight controls remain fully available (except some spoiler panels) through the other two hydraulic systems. Great job, keep them coming!

Max respect for all the professionalism shown. - The pilots staying calm, even if you can hear the stress in their voice, but still try to double check everything. And try to delay calling emergency as much as possible until it was found it's no longer possible - The ATC providing clear and simple instructions, totally trying to assist the pilots rather than burdening them. Providing clear options, and catering for the pilots needs as much as possible. - Tower & Departure (?) working together relaying messages back-and-forth, alerting Emergency, other planes It is true that when flying, you're not alone ... captain, F.O., ATC, cabin crew, etc ... all work together to ensure that lives are safe.
