Emergency colic situation with Aurora - a rescued Belgian Draft horse saved from slaughter Ep.84

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Episode 84
Back a few months ago we worked with another rescue group to save a Belgian Draft horse who we named Aurora. This sweet horse went through so much. She was dumped at a kill pen and was almost sent to slaughter. After we picked her up and got her to the farm we found out that she was extremely underweight. We found out she had cellulitis in her back leg along with Squamous cell carcinoma tumors in both of her eyes. After having surgery to remove the tumors and two weeks of chemotherapy we had Aurora on the road to recovery and enjoying retirement life! She was receiving acupuncture every two weeks to help her lymphatic system move some of the fluid through her leg to reduce the swelling. She made friends with one of our other rescued horses Amelia. They were best friends and went everywhere together.
Last week we had an emergency colic situation with Aurora. This video is everything that happened with Aurora. Rescuing senior horses is always challenging because you don't know their history and what they have been through. Our mission is to give them the best retirement life we can give them for as long as they have. Live everyday to the fullest as tomorrow is never promised.
We hope you enjoy this video! Make sure you like, comments and subscribe to our channel so you don't miss anything happening around here! Because it's never a dull moment!
As a growing horse rescue group, we rely on monetary donations to keep the organization moving forward. The Big Hoof Foundation will always be transparent with how your donations are used. 100% of the money we raise goes directly to the rescued horses' bail fees, transport, feed, hay, medical bills, medications, alternative medical treatments, supplements, surgeries, etc. Every dollar raised is for the horses!
Our ability to help these horses is only because of the generous donations from our subscribers and followers! Please consider making a tax deductible donation to the Big Hoof Foundation to help us save more of these precious lives from shipping to slaughter and provide them with the care they deserve. Thank you everyone for your continued support in saving these gentle giants! We could not be saving these lives without you!
www.bighooffoundation.org
If you would like to support us, the one item WE always need is FEED! If you would like to send a gift/donation of feed (Alfa Pro) you can send that through our local feed store, HF & C Amarillo. HF&C Amarillo has offered to help us with anyone wanting to send a gift/donation of Alfa-Pro to the horses. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo/Big Hoof Foundation and they will add the gifts to our account.
Alfa-Pro is a complete pelleted alfalfa mixed with vitamins and minerals all the horses need on a daily basis. Alfa-Pro is $17.45 per bag. They do offer a discount if you purchase by the pallet (40 - 50 pound bags) $16.95 per bag if purchased by the pallet. WE go through 6 pallets per month to feed all 22 horses (440 pounds per day)!
Thank you to everyone that has sent us gifts of Alfa Pro! The horses love Alfa Pro and we truly appreciate the bags/pallets you have sent to us!

Do you feed the horses 2x a day or do they have access to food 24/7? Is it true that constant access to food cuts down on ulcers and colic issues? (I do not know the answer to this question, so this is in no way meant to criticize. In fact, none of my comments are ever meant to criticize, only to ask questions).

I am so sorry you lost Aurora, but you absolutely made the right choice. It’s definitely not fair to let any animal suffer! Gif bless you, Julie. Sounds like she did have a volvulus. .

The best way to prevent colic is to use hay bags so there is access to hay 24/7. Feeding once or twice a day isn't as good as constant access with hay bags.

Your unshakable love for your animals is incredibly moving. Time heals... She is happy now with her maker. And remember, she couldn't have possibly been in a more loving home. Animals can break your heart like no other, we don't associate them with evil. But they're worth all the pain in the world. God bless you, and heal your broken heart. You're incredibly sensitive, and that's what makes you love so much. You've touched our hearts profoundly. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Poor girl. You gave her the best life. Her pain was horrible but did everything you could. Sweet girl, fly high now and be free. I know your heart breaks. You are incredible. This is more than likely due to the starvation and everything else she suffered in her life. At least she left this world knowing what love and bliss was. Watching her run free through the pasture for this first time in her life, having horse friends, getting just to be a horse and being able to make her own decisions for the first time in her life. You gave her all of that. You should be so proud that you are blessed to be able to do this. I am very proud of you💕🙏

Oh Julie 😢 my heart is breaking for you. I can't believe you are going through this again. I had so prayed for her to have a long retirement with being loved. She had the most love anyone could have give her, sadly not the time. I'm sure it's all the years of such a hard working life and a lot of neglect that it takes such a toll on their bodies. It feels like it gets harder with each horse you lose. Knowing they had all found love, trust, happiness with lots of friends makes it easier. The video of her was just so heartwarming bringing tears to my eyes 😢 💔🌈

You gave her everything you could. I believe she knew that.🕊️ Unfortunately in rescue over just retirement, this is going to happen more frequently after what they already survived. That's why compassion fatigue is so real. Don't beat yourself up and we all appreciate your efforts, service to those beautiful horses and your determination to ensure the best loving care.💜

BIG HUGS to you and my sincere Thank You for giving Aurora a chance to live like a horse should. Because of you, Aurora knew some kindness and love and got to be part of your herd. We all wish she could have been here longer, at least she made it to Fletcher Farms for a few muffins!

What a wonderful way to retire...not the tremendous pain she was in, but the love that you gave her, her new herd, her retirement, she knew you loved her and cared. She had horse friends as well as human who loved her and were kind, not expecting anything in return. I am sorry for your loss, but God willing she's in an even greener pasture with more love than anyone can imagine (and we can imaging a lot!) God bless you, your husband, your farm and the wonderful staff at the clinic. Rest in peace Miss Aurora. I don't even know you personally and yet I am crying for your sad loss. I am thankful you are no longer in pain.

Although my heart is breaking, I know you made the right decision to let Aurora go. And watching your clips of her running in the pasture tells me that she enjoyed her life with you. When dealing with older individuals, be they equine or human, our hearts need to be aware that some will leave sooner than we'd like - so every day/hour/minute of freedom, dignity, peace & love they receive is special. You & Corey are providing a wonderful place for these beautiful horses to enjoy their remaining time on earth. Thank you so very much.

So so sorry but you did all you could do for her and her last days were her best. She was loved & happy & you can't really ask for more than that ,plus she was humanely put down & rescued from the killers. Now she is free from any pain & old age. May she rest in peace ❤. God bless you for being her compassionate friend.❤

Julie, Cory and BigHoof Foundation, you are simply the best thing for these beautiful creatures... opening your hearts to them and staying with them through thick and thin. As difficult as it is to watch these types of videos, it is nothing compared to what you go through as you try to help when the horses are unwell. Of course, I cried watching the tribute to Aurora, especially watching her run and be with her bestie, Amelia. I hope Amelia is managing alright with the loss of her friend! So glad Elias is doing better. Loved watching the kitties romp around you and hearing the pigeons and birds, despite the serious nature of your message. Thank you again for all that you do! ♥

Thank you for the update. The video shows what an emotional rollercoaster it is looking after these majestic horses and how their health can turn on a sixpence. It is a huge responsibility looking after them all. You do a magnificent job Julie & Corey and everyone on the board doing your very best to give these beautiful horses their best life. It's very sad to hear of Aurora's passing but as others have commented she had a lovely, caring home with you ❤️🐴 It's a shame she didn't have longer with you but you gave her a wonderful home ❤️❤️🐴🐴

Loss is so hard. You try so hard for each individual that you rescue. From day one, each knows love and care. No matter their background, when they arrive at Fletcher Farm they are SAFE, fed and watered and treated for any and all health issues. You are so loving and patient and gentle with each horse. Your organization is making a giant difference in each horse's life. Prayers to help you through a loss, and for each resident to have a well earned happy, healthy retirement. Thank you for all you do. We love the videos, that allow us to meet and get to know each rescue. ❤😍 Aurora, gentle soul you will be missed., enjoy the rainbow bridge pastures and be pain free. ❤
