Viewer Question:
Josh Mettier - Hi John. I was lucky enough to see an early fan screening of Elvis with my sister and her husband. I admit I don’t actually know a lot about Elvis, just a lot of his songs and music. I personally just loved it. Austin Butler should be an early favorite to win the Oscar and Tom Hanks was just incredible. I wanted to know if you had a chance to see it yet and if so, what did you think of it? Thanks.

I was absolutely exhausted at the end of this movie..... Elvis was absolutely exhausted at the end of his life. I think that was the point, so honestly I think the run time is fine.... maaaybe you could trim a minute here or there out of some scenes, but no one scene to me feels like it could be just cut wholesale.

I saw it twice today. I am not even that big of an Elvis fan, but the acting performances blew me away. The film didn’t feel long to me at all. I actually plan on seeing it a third time next week.

Just watched Elvis today and I honestly didn’t have high expectations, I wasn’t a big fan of Great Gatsby. But oh my god I absolutely loved Elvis, it blew my expectations out of the water. Incredible performance by Austin Butler and for someone who didn’t know a lot about Elvis it was a great insight into his life. 10/10

I saw Elvis yesterday (June 24) and it was fudging phenomenal. Austin Butler deserves Best Actor award everywhere next year. Everything in this film was perfect to me. I just loved it. I saw it with my Aunty, who is a massive Elvis fan, and she just loved it. My favourite film of 2022. 10/10

Honestly the running time didn't both me at all.... and I kind of liked the exhausted feeling at the end, because it mirrored Elvis in the end of his life. He pretty much worked himself to death, and by the end you can see how god damn tired he is. Very meta.

I agree, it did not seem to be that long. It flows. The first hour was too fast cut. Some cuts were so fast I could not even focus on them. But then the movie drama kicks in. So I disagree with this review. Nothing dragged.

I don’t know what the right words are, When I watch what he entered into, his voice was magical but for the time he was in the popular culture said unbelievable comments and the same from other famous blues artists when I see Elvis saying he can’t criticize any other artists “There’s room for all of us” what a gifted person he was not just in his voice but compassion to touch so many it’s still being felt in 2022😎 There is only one King and he said that too. Thank you God for letting us all lose ourselves in the gift of music That’s made for EVERYONE!….

Would have easily been happy with it being 3 hours. Never bored, yes emotionally spent, but about how painful it was watching the end of his life, and it was worth every moment. Could have spent more on 68’ Special and Aloha from Hawaii, but how do you pack in this man’s life even in 3 hours. I wasn’t interested in Elvis before, although grew up in 60s & 70s, I am now and have done a deep dive into his life and seen the movie 3 times now. Each time seeing more incredible details Baz put into this masterpiece.

why do people go on about not enough about Elvis. The story was told from the view of the manager, promoter Tom Parker. it was about their relationship. I am from New Zealand and a fan. This was not about his personal life. That would be at least 4 hours. Bax is in intelligent man who researched and researched to do this movie. the previous Elvis movies n TV series are his entire life. But other movies also missed out parts. The TV series broke it down bits by bits. Warners told Baz when they saw 4 hours to cut it down. so imagine what is in that. I will never critize film director becoz I don't have the experience to critique someone who makes and directs movies. I love all his movies, and other movies. we all see things differently. Bax was the right person to do this movie, and what was Great is that he picked the right actor to play Elvis. That is genius. I was skeptical about Austin but man oh man he was amazing. And what was amazing with Baz he kept pushing n pushing Austin and tested him in different ways before he was satisfied and gave Austin the role. Don't knock the movie. just be supportive of Sir EP that his name is revived in the Big Screen by Baz to entertain and deliver the message to new generation. my 10 year old was very excited and enjoyed the movie. I found another fan to continue his legacy when I leave this world. she was very angry with Parker. she said mummy he took 50% of his earnings.😠. I laughed and said wow that is stuck in your mind? she said No. It Elvis, he was very very handsome 😂♥️ and charismatic. If my daughter enjoyed it and a young fan, why can't you people enjoy the movie and come away with a massage. We both wanted more. RIP Sir EP. and thank you Baz, Austin, Hanks n whole crew. Also big hands up to his wife who made those brilliant costumes.

No, I think elvis was perfect run time, in fact it should be longer. I need baz to release the 4 hr cut. Edit: I also don't think theres an issue of not being film of the year/or being popular, because in england in cinemas near me, they were still getting sold out up until yesterday. And these were big screens constantly getting sold out that I struggled to buy tickets!

They could have cut some stuff out off end of Parker's life. However, that was the fastest 2.5+ plus movie I've ever seen. Much faster than Titanic. Austin did Elvis 100%. I managed to not have to make a bathroom trip during the entire movie. Already seen it twice, and plan to see it many more times. Want a 4 hour version to watch at home.

I agree the editing was absolutely exhausting. It slowed down thankfully at the 68 special onwards, but the beginning was relentless. Skipped past his early years way to quick for me. The vegas scenes were great though. First Vegas show was on point. Good film, Butler was superb and did the role great justice. Hanks was a little over the top for me but still good as hanks is.

Got me to laugh, made me have fun with it’s over the top style, even like Elvis not being a fan. Then the third act started. I thought to myself, here we go, this is where it falls apart. And while I agree, it’s too long, it sticks the landing it was shooting for and I was overall blown away. I think Baz hit the mark and it’s going to see some Oscar Noms. Bravo

The thing about Elvis being larger than life is that you don’t have to be the biggest Elvis fan to understand why he was the most popular celebrity in the world for 20 years. Jackie Chan talks about listening to Elvis and singing Elvis songs as a part of how he learned to speak English. He also just said he likes the music of Elvis as well which also helped. So you’re talking about a guy that never got to tour outside of America And yet still had a worldwide following and a worldwide audience for his music. Elvis was a guy that literally just one day decided he wanted to be a secret agent at large, so he just went to the White House to talk to President Nixon and ask him about it And he could do that because he’s fucking Elvis. Who is the guy? I just decided I’m going to ask the President of the United States if I can be a secret agent at large and I’m also going to bring him a World War II era special edition, colt, 45 gun, as a sign of respect for the President of the United States. The other part of that story is that he did this all unannounced. That’s how much power Elvis had just because of his fame. This is the kind of guy that would make a new friend and then solidify that friend by buying him a brand new Cadillac. I’m pretty sure that people will always understand why Elvis was the number one most famous person in the world for 20 years. It’s not that hard to figure out. He was larger than life and he was making incredible music and he had a huge personality.

Such an amazing film. The energy and atmosphere is electrifying. I could almost agree that the film was slightly too long except that if it had been shorter, it might have done a disservice to just how impactful Elvis was to American culture and music world-wide. I mean, Elvis was to music what James Dean and Marlon Brando were to acting. I could easily see this deservedly winning the Oscar for best film and / or best director, best music, and best actor Oscar for Austin Butler.

It's difficult to fit 42 years of a life that had so many ups and downs. The first hour was just about the most exciting Cinema of the year showing early Elvis his influences and his animal magnetism. But there was no way to continue the story with the elimination of the sad demise of a true marvel. I would have preferred a 2 hour film of just the high points. We knew Elvis shot televisions we didn't have to see it.

I feel there could have been a bit more soul into the film. I was looking forward to seeing who Elvis was, as a person, as a father, as a husband, as a son, as a friend, how he met his wife, their romance, what challenges he faced growing up, how did he overcome those challenges to get his first record deals with Sun Records, what he felt when his first record achieved success, what he felt on anything.

@@moekontze116 I think they missed a trick here. It was up to them to show it from his own perspective if they wanted and show him growing up and achieving his first record deal and focus on his love, life and triumphs, instead of just making a documentary of all the problems he faced.

I loved the movie but I think Hanks' portrayal was a bit off. He was too obvious in showing the Colonel as the villain, almost to the moustache-twisting level. And I know he wanted the accent and voice to be authentic but I found his voice annoying after a while.

I agree that the movie was too long but only because this should have been a two-parter. They could have made the first film about his earlier days and his time in the military. While the second covered his time in Hollywood, the stuff with Nixon, his downfall, and his eventual death. Both of which could have been 2 hour films.

I just saw Elvis. It was awesome. I loved it. The performance from both Tom and Austin were superb. I also can see both of them get oscar nominations. And most definitely they have a very good chance to win. The movie somehow was dragging after the first two hours. I was also hoping the movie will be over at that point. Anyway, it was really good and I will watch it again sooner or later. This movie really rocks.

Idk what you could trim as there is alot to tell for this music icon . I'm also very interested on where it's box office ends up . Bohemian Rhapsody almost got to a billion . Could Elvis reach somewhere near that ? I think it's gonna have a nice opening weekend . The fan event I went to last night was pretty full with lots of the older crowd .

I don't even like to sit through end credits of Marvel films any more, but we stayed until the very end just to keep the feeling of this movie going. It is hard to translate the energy of Elvis to anyone who doesn't know music or was not alive when the king was at his peak. I was especially interested with the use of rap and what his opinion of modern urban music would be.

what movies did it remind you of? I've got Carlito's Way, and the Elephant Man. 1970s Elvis is Carlito to Sean Penn's Colonel Parker, close relations, deceit, betrayal. The Elephant Man was a circus act that was abused by both the showman and by the doctor as well. ALSO, the style and feel of the movie felt like Spiderman Into the Spiderverse.

From the trailers, it is covering too much! May b too long bcause they didnt focus more before they started. Judy worked, in part, bcause it used such a small time period. The Luhrmann pace is going to b overboard at 2h39m, for many people. Also, one market for the movie is older people that actually remember him, these problems will likely b more of an issue for that demo.
