Lyrics:
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way
Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

The fact that he also grew up in poverty, back in that time being white but growing up in Black neighborhood must have been looked down but it is what gave Elvis his spirit of music! Beautiful Artist🙌🏻🙌🏻 No one comes close to him even today.

I remember being a homeless young boy hearing this song for the first time and feeling so sad for the boy in the song. Not realizing that I was just as bad off. Thankfully I had a very strong single mother who wouldn’t let me out of her sight hardly. At the time I resented it but she did the right thing and kept me out of an unwise path path. I pray for everyone in poverty. I learned not to rely on the government and to make my own way even if the job I had was terrible.

When I think of all the suffering he went through at the end of his life and how crazy his life became because of his fame, it breaks my heart. I’m 60, and knowing that he went through all that Paden obsession indicted only 42 is so tragic.

I kept hoping the whole movie they’d show him playing it, because it’s my favorite Elvis song! Then the credits rolled and I clapped when I heard it playing. If Austin Butler doesn’t win an Oscar for that performance, I’d boycott the Academy! Some critics have been way too hard on this film, only because they’d rather hear themselves talk than actually witness a beautiful film.

Elvis Presley Lyrics "In The Ghetto" As the snow flies On a cold and gray Chicago mornin' A poor little baby child is born In the ghetto And his mama cries 'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need It's another hungry mouth to feed In the ghetto People, don't you understand The child needs a helping hand Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day Take a look at you and me, Are we too blind to see? Do we simply turn our heads and look the other way? Well, the world turns And a hungry little boy with a runny nose Plays in the street as the cold wind blows In the ghetto And his hunger burns So he starts to roam the streets at night And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight In the ghetto Then one night in desperation The young man breaks away He buys a gun, Steals a car, Tries to run, But he don't get far And his mama cries As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man Face down on the street with a gun in his hand In the ghetto And as her young man dies, On a cold and gray Chicago mornin', Another little baby child is born In the ghetto And his mama cries

This song is my song for describing me living in a group home after having a troubled family relationship over the years. I’m 25 now and I was admitted to a cultural group home in Valley Stream, New York in 2020 during the Covid20 pandemic. I have PTSD from being in a residential school in Upstate New York for 3 years from 2014-2017 and I was abused there. I never went to college after I graduated from that institution. Now in 2024 I don’t have any friends my age and I have been separated from my family for years. I have been in the group home for 4 years now since 2020 and I want to get out soon. I want to be closer to my parents again but they are getting older and my dad doesn’t get along with me. I hope my family realizes that I want to reunite with them and be discharged from the group home one day so I can be happy and enjoy life again. God Bless All. Matty. ❤️ 💐

Elvis lived this poverty in his early years. His poverty started in Tupelo Mississippi and moved to Memphis Tennessee. Eventually things got better for him because of his talent. That is why he does this song so well, because he lived it! I lived it in my early years also. I remember playing in the streets, and in the coal pile, and being cold and hungry. Mom used to get really mad at me when I got into the coal pile. Our poverty started in Kentucky but moved to Detroit when I was 6. Things started to get better after that, but that is why this is one of my favorite songs of all time, because I can relate!!!

Just went back home to Maryland for first time other than a funeral in 30+ years. Knew things got worse in Baltimore over time. Never expected to see how bad and deteriorated. Broke my heart. It is now truly a ghetto. I pray for those that live there in poverty and despair.

This song has always gotten to me. I was born and raised in South Portland, here in Maine, and my grandmother on my mother’s side, who lived in Biddeford, never had much, alongside the fact that her husband, who was the one making the money in the house, frequently abused her in the earlier years of my life. But back then I didn’t know better, and I have come to realize over the years that sadly she was extremely poor, living in a rundown ghetto area in a rundown house. She died of cancer nearly 9 years ago, and my mother and I cried for so long about that. Family is a blessing, no matter how much money you do or don’t have.

I remember listening to this beautiful song as a child all the way to French west Africa. Although I didn’t understand a thing, I knew it carried something deep and the melody expressed the mood of the story very well. Now that I understand the lyrics, it’s even more beautiful. And sad. And actual.

On this day August 16 1977 Elvis Eren Presley passed away. I was an 11 year old kid who really didn't understand at the time the impact he had on music and the world as a whole. He chose to fight for this country and not dodge the draft. He gave to countless charities. All the while fighting his own demons. Please join me in a moment of silence and prayer for this true AMARICAN HERO. R.I.P. Elvis Presley.
