Spot on about his band, Rory. They were a fucking machine. That bassist, Jerry Scheff is one of the best bass players ever! And how cool is Elvis, man. The moves and the swagger and always the supreme voice. "Just Pretend" is another great one from those 1970 shows, as is "I Can't Stop Loving You".

Thought you might enjoy a little Elvis trivia: he grew up in extreme poverty in mixed neighborhoods during a time of segregation and was influenced by all different genres of music. As soon as he became famous, his generosity with family, friends, strangers, and charities was off the charts. He was a catalyst in not only changing music and bringing what was considered black music into the mainstream but in changing culture worldwide in many ways. He didn't have any formal music training but, in addition to singing, he arranged songs, produced recordings, played several instruments, and personally auditioned and hired musicians. He directed the band with his body movements. One of his band members said "as far as I know, we're the only band that's directed by an ass". His drummer said "backing Elvis was like playing for a stripper". They had to be on their toes at all times because Elvis was very spontaneous on stage. Nothing was choreographed. He took audience requests and sometimes would decide on the spur of the moment to perform a song he liked that he had never rehearsed with the band. Fun fact: Elvis is the only person that's been inducted into six major Music Halls of Fame: Rock 'N Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Country, Gospel, Pop, and Rockabilly. Enjoy the journey, and always expect the unexpected.

I remember when Elvis first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. They would only show him from the waist up. He was the first singer we had ever seen to move his legs and body that way and we thought it the most exciting thing we had ever seen! My friends and I went crazy and had our hair cut in "ducktails" (both sexes) and all the boys tried to curl their lip like Elvis. Our parent thought we had really gone insane. Eventually they realized he wasn't all that dangerous, and began to listen to his music. 'Poke Salad Annie' is Elvis really showing his roots. I loved it when he checked the lyrics like it was no big thing.

I'm loving your Elvis reactions and have subscribed. Since he recorded over 700 songs there's a lot to discover. I'd like to see you react to: Elvis Presley - Music Evolution (1954-1977) (7:32). It's a series of clips that will give you a taste of his versatility. And this is a really fun one: Elvis Presley - Love Me Tender, Kissing a lot of Girls (7:41).

some info on the song if you don't already know: Poke Sallet (correct spelling) is a plant from the poisonous Pokeweed plant that can be eaten when picked @ right time of yr. & cooked -- mostly associated w-the U.S. states in the south, it can be found in the Appalachian Mountains from southern NY to parts of Mississippi & other southern locations; the "hut 2 3 4" was from his days in the Army - it's the military marching cadence; there's some disagreement on that slip of paper: some say lyrics to the song, others say a note a girl in the front row passed to him; i think if it were lyrics the paper would be larger

The piece of paper he reads is a request ,they use to ask the Audience if they had any requests at the beginning of the show and members of his entourage use to write them down and pass them to him !

@@christopherone1 Hi Lauren. No not this time. He sang Polk salad Annie at almost every concert, he loved this song and knew the words. If you watch him sing Sweet Caroline live in Vegas, this same show, you'll see the interaction with the lady, the eye contact and gestures, and Elvis takes out the note and shows her he still has it.

@@christopherone1 lol you're rude & you're wrong in one of the outtakes from ttwii you see a woman hand him the note & see him stick in his belt then a couple songs later, during sweet caroline he pulls it out holds it and looks right at her smiling letting her know he hadn't forgotten then finally during polk salad he pulls it out & reads it during the rest of the show he continually looks at the woman & smiles at her... literally the whole thing is on video yes elvis did occasionally read from lyric sheets on stage but he always announced thats what he was gonna do..."i don't know the words so i have to read them" ect.. the lyric sheets were big so he could easily read them in low light on stage but that is absolutely not what here during polk salad so maybe know what you're talking about before trying to school someone else
