Hi David, you do have a few Elvis no.2 RCA Mono 1963 was my second LP that l had brought! Back in 1963. I’m still looking for a good copy of the HMV LP. All l see real grotty copies, that should be put into the the bin! Maybe one day I will find one, but l am not losing any sleep over it. I have come to the collusion that l will never have all the copies of vinyl that I would like. Even if l could find them in good condition. With it not costing an arm and a leg! Stay safe until your next video. Ellie. 🎼🎶🎵🕺🏻🙂🇺🇦

Hi Ellie. Those old HMV covers are really thin and even the laminated surfaces don't seem to help much. I'm lucky enough to have reasonably good copies of all three of the HMV albums but, as you say, the vast majority out there are in poor shape. Even a very ordinary copy of No. 2 can fetch about 100 pounds. Thanks for watching!

Hi David. I absolutely love this album. For one, I love the beautiful cover shot of the original U.S. album, although the best cover of this particular LP is the British cover you selected as your favorite collector’s copy. That is just an amazing cover-the photo of Elvis and of course, that shirt! (“thank you, Natalie Wood!”). More importantly, I consider this LP my third favorite studio album behind Elvis is Back and From Elvis in Memphis…I don’t count TTWIT as a full studio album and I don’t subscribe to the much ballyhooed, critically-acclaimed opinions of the bore fest that is for me, Elvis Country (with a couple of noteworthy exceptions on that album). In my opinion, it is also an upgrade from Elvis’ iconic and history-making debut album. Here you have no filler Sun sessions’ recordings or the annoying songs I must skip over (“I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry Over You” and “One Sided Love Affair” to be precise). Sure, there are those of us who prefer Elvis’ smooth and mature vocals of the early and late sixties (that would be me) or the operatic, drama-filled vocals of the seventies (that would not be me). However, I think Elvis’ vocals are just fine here and the original band is as tight as it was ever going to be before they were no longer as prominent once the fancy, more accomplished session musicians came in to play on his sessions. Some others may criticize the surprising number of Little Richard covers or the fact that Elvis did not have the powerful vocal chops of Little Richard (no one did) to see those songs through. However, he does an admirable job, and the songs are transformed into wonderfully entertaining rockabilly numbers. Scotty Moore’s blistering, solos permeate throughout the album, leaving no doubt as to who is the ultimate rockabilly band-Elvis, Scotty, Bill, and DJ. Their legacy in the 1950’s cannot be overstated. The echo you mentioned on “First in Line” is absolutely overdone, however, for me it gives the song a haunting quality which I rather like. Even the (arguably) least significant track, “Old Shep” still gives us Elvis on the piano (always a treat) and a heartfelt performance sung with conviction. The inclusion of the classic, and perhaps the best track on the LP “Love Me” is a welcome delight given no singles were included on his albums. The song, as I understand it, was never released as a single, but rather on an EP which made its way to #2 on the charts. This gives us an incredible variety of songs-much like Elvis is Back, without the presence of a huge hit single. Similarly, as with Elvis is Back, several different genres are represented: rock ‘n’ roll/rockabilly, country, pop, ballads, traditional, and blues-and Elvis and his mates are more than up to the task. Just a brilliant testament of Elvis’ 1950’s legacy on popular music.

Hi, Tony. Wow, that's a real tour-de-force comment! You should start your own Elvis review channel 😄 I particularly like your last point about the variety on the album, and the thing is it wasn't a self-conscious thing. "Oh, we need a country song as well". It was all just good music to him. Like you, I prefer it to the US version of the first album and it's up there as one of my favourite studio albums too. Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.

It’s marvelous that you talked about the advantage of a mono pick up. I was looking at your project turntable and thinking how inadequate it is for playing vintage records - I know because I had the same model. I moved on to an audiotechnica mono cartridge about three years ago (on a different deck) and was instantly amazed that there was no inner groove distortion, and I had accepted it as a fact of life. I have around 1000 mono records and just makes sense, they all sound better. In my case I have two headshells for each of my turntables, one mono and one stereo. I recently read that modern mono pressings (1980+) have ‘stereo grooves’ and this appears to be true, as you can get a comparable sound from a 2M blue from many of them. When it comes to vintage records, though. There is no comparison. I loved seeing your collection of ‘Elvis’ and I too only got onto it later because I had 56 Sessions and couldn’t get it in mono. Now I have about six copies - one of the least duplicated in my 1956- 70 collection. The later records are less interesting as duplicates, in Europe and America anyway. Great video, keep going. I am watching you as I clean records in the kitchen. 😀

David you are 100-percent right about the Mono cartridge my rock and roll number one and number two and best of and all of the HMV stuff sounds brilliant on my old mono cartridge radiogram you can't beat them, and I also agree on first in line, way too much echo.. as Stan freburg said 😄 and your copy of rock and roll number 2 Elvis Presley number two or Elvis on HMV is a little bit better than my one fair play to you. But as I think I did say before I don't think for a rock and roll rockabilly or whatever a rocking album I don't think you can beat rock and roll number one HMV.

The '56 Sessions Vol. 1 & 2 mentioned !!! 💪😎 Vol. 1 was the 1st ever LP that I bought. I have both "Vols" in my collection. I didn't know that the complete 2nd album songs are included on those 2 LPs. When the album is that old then I prefer a MONO version. I just checked the track listing of this album and out of those songs "Long Tall Sally" is my favorite one. There's gonna be some rockin' at some point, Jarkko/MyVinylBar PS. I didn't have any "Elvis luck" at the Record Fair two Saturdays ago. Great compilations, the '56 Sessions. I remember playing Volume 2 for the first time and the needle got stuck in the middle of Love Me Tender. Just stopped completely. Just shows that you have to clean even new records before playing them. It was fine after I'd given it a wipe. It must have been nice to go to a record fair. Hi, I like the '72 one in yellow lettering. UK ones are nice too. I had an 80's German pressing in Stereo, awful sound, sold it later. This LP was France's first Elvis LP with U.S. cat. no. (LPM 1382) then issued with their own number the following year, because Elvis' first LP wasn't released till '66. @@ElvisPresleyInJapan Hi EPIJ, France released first LP as 12", not in 1956, this is because they issued 5 volumes simiar to Elvis' EPA 747, with same photo and different coloured lettering, called Rock 'n' Roll 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
