Way, way, way back, when I was a poor college student, I had the pleasure of sitting in on a number of open-mic Irish jams in Portland OR where I lived. Two of the members of the Bothy Band had moved to Portland during the violence in N Ireland in the late 70's/early 80's. (Kevin Burke and Mícheál O'Domhnaill) brought much of the Bothy's fervor and aggression to the Portland Irish scene ... jigs were not played, they were attacked... I broke more stings on my acoustic than I ever did playing electric. This song feels so familiar to me, tho we never played anything like it. By the way, the Irish pipes (the Uileann pipes (not in this song, nut definitely in Eluvietie's arsenal) are just as loud as their Scottish cousins. In contrast, the Hurdy Gurdy is a bit lower lever (volume) than a fiddle/violin... I think it's glorious that thegurdy's bowed sound is being brought into modern music. You're really getting the hang of setting the sound levels... this one was great. As always, it is a pleasure to watch you encounter new music. And you are right, this song leaves the first-time listener without words. If I were to play music in a band-setting again, I would opt for something like this... I'm not sure which instrument I would choose, tho the acoustic guitar (or Irish bouzouki) fit my talents the best. Playing this song, in particular, would be wild.

The instrument is a Hurdy Gurdy. It's a string instrument! Basically, players have to turn a wheel by hand, the wheel rub against the strings inside, and they have a keyboard to make the notes! 🙂 I recommand you to check more Eluveitie, they are fantastic! Here's some of my favorites songs : Thousandfold King Helvetios King Epona A rose for Epona Breathe Also, if you want more folk metal bands, here's a few ones : Korpiklaani Cruachan Svartsot Heidevolk In Extremo Saltatio Mortis Skiltron Hope you'll enjoy! 🙂

Heidevolk is from the same region (Velua) where I live in the Netherlands. Eluveitie is one of my two favourite bands and in my opinion the best folk metal band, but I am going to check out some stuff from Heidevolk. I heared some songs of them and it's really strange to hear metal in my own language haha

One of my favorites. If you want to hear Fabienne, the female vocalist, in a little softer context, I recommend her side project ILLUMISHADE. Also, some members from an earlier lineup of Eluveitie formed a band called Cellar Darling, who create sort of prog mixed with folk. (As opposed to the death-metal mixed with folk that you hear here)

Great reaction Pandora, glad you liked them. The band is from Switzerland and are one of my favourite bands. Eluveitie (the English pronounciation is El-Vay-Tee, the "u" is silent) was an inscription on an antique pottery found at an archeological site in Mantua (northern Italy). Mantua was an Etruskian city and the inscription possibly means, that this pot belonged or was crafted by a Helvetian person, because "Eluveitie" means something like "The Helvetian". The actual official name of Switzerland is Confoederatio Helvetica. The band plays Celtic Folk Metal using tin whistle, low whistle, fiddle, bagpipe, celtic harp, mandola, bodhran and hurdy gurdy and is a combination of melodic Death Metal and Celtic Folk. Their main theme is Celtic history and culture from the antiquity. The Celts lived all over Europe and were a pretty dominant culture until they were subdued by the Romans who almost eradicated all Celtic culture on the european continent. Eluveitie mostly sing of the celtic tribe of the Helvetii who lived in the area of todays Switzerland, southern Germany and western Austria and was the first tribe that came under pressure when the Roman Empire started its expansion north and when the Gallic Wars (around 60-54 B.C.) started. The band had a lot of line-up changes during the years, the most impactful in 2016, when the previous female vocalist/hurdy gurdist Anna Murphy, drummer Merlin Sutter and guitarist Ivo Henzi left the band and founded "Cellar Darling" (check them out). Some songs from Eluveitie you could react to are: "King", "Tegernako" (live at Summerbreeze 2008), "Thousandfold", "A Rose for Epona", or "Quoth the Raven" (video recorded in the studio) with the previous line-up (pre 2016) or "The Slumber", "Worship", "Deathwalker" (live at Wacken 2019), "Breathe", "Ambiramus", "Ategnatos" with the current line-up. They have two pure acoustic folk albums too. Some of their acoustic songs I would recommend are "Omnos", "Brictom", "Desumiis Luge" (a curse of Helvetic women against some Roman leaders) from the album Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion and "Lugus" (god of Trade and craftsmanship), "Caturix" (god of war), "Artio" (bear goddess) or "Epona" from the album Evocation II: Pantheon. For "Epona" someone added Gaulish and English lyrics to the official video and at the end of this video there is a little explanation who Epona was. On these two albums the songs are sung in Gaulish, the extinct (since 500 AD) language of the continental Celts that could be reconstructed by using inscripions found at archeological sites from all over Europe and parts (grammar, pronounciation) of languages that are of Celtic origin that are still spoken today, like Gaelic, Welsh or Breton. You could check out the channel of Eluveities hurdy gurdist Michalina Malisz kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5qElNOSnLGolNo.html . She has done a lot of playthroughs of Eluveitie songs on the hurdy gurdy and before she was asked to join the band she did a lot of Eluveitie covers, so PLEASE avoid these covers and playthroughs until you have reacted to the specific song because you would ruin future reactions. But you could check her "5riffs" series where she plays 5 riffs from famous bands (like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden) on the hurdy gurdy. She has done a great cover of "Martyr" by August burns Red too kzread.info/dash/bejne/f6qnlZuTlbTQoZc.html . There is also a great interview with Christian "Chrigel" Glanzmann (founder, male vocalist) and Fabienne Erni (female vocalist) which they did for the podcast of vocal coach Beth Roars: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2Vo0qOyn6TPebA.html . Fabienne Erni and Guitarist Jonas Wolf also have a side project called "Illumishade" thats worth checking out.
