And then there's the doom/black metal band Seer Bliss that has a horn section. Like they'll all be dressed in ceremonial robes with corpse paint and shit, and then they whip out the saxophones and trombones.

Eluveitie use traditional melodies in their songs often and this song is no exception. Two Irish tunes were incorporated into this song, the chorus is "I am Stretched On Your Grave" and the instrumental section before the guitar solos is "Lads of Laois"

Loved the musicianship, vocals, and changing dynamics. Dynamic change is so often missing in modern music. Love this! I am a drummer/percussionist, flutist and vocalist. So appreciate all. Ian Anderson gave me the impatus to take up flute. I play improvisational, jazz rock and Latin rock and jazz, reggae pop etc. I’m more getting into metal now too! Thanks for this.

@@luisnunes3863 I checked out Akrona And. GRAI. Liked them both. Particularly GUAI. Watched a music video featuring a recorder like flute and visuals of a guy dressed in Nordic furs with sword and shield. Would like to know the name of the song. Really enjoyed it. Good stuff! Thanks.

@@fredread9216 In the Arms of Mara. First one I listened to, also. GRAI have a lot of live videos on their channel. If you enjoyed them more than Arkona, then Arkona's earlier stuff will be more to your taste than the recent material. Do give Feuershwanz a go when you need a laugh, though. 😉😉

thxs for this reaction. Knew this band before, but haven't listen to them since their former female vocalist left the band. And FYI a hurdy-gurdy would cost around 1,5k in germany. So it's still cheaper than an uileann pipe 😅

Great reaction! As others have said this is on the more heavy/harsh side of their music. You should checkout Inis Mona, Omnos, or Rose for Epona. The growling and screeaming are much less harsh and the folky instruments really shine. They're biggest song is probably The Call of the Mountains, a tribute to their home country, Switzerland. Which has whistles, bagpipes, and violin's but no hurdy gurdy. Cool part is they recorded 5 versions of the song. One in English and one in each of the four languages of Switzerland. They also sing some of their songs in reconstructed Gaulish, the dead language of the Gauls. Omnos is one such song. One of the names for Switzerland is Helvetia which comes from the name of a Gaulish tribe that lived on the Swiss plateau during the time of the Romans.

The band has a lot of variety in its music, dare I say this is a little more mainstream in its presentation than much of it. I like their videos as it happens because there is a lot of effort in the production, but there are also plenty of live videos for those that like those too.

I love this band. However, this is the more extreme end of the folk metal continuum (and of metal in general), so this is definitely not music for everyone. It is, however, an example of the diversity and contrast that is possible in the genre of heavy metal. It is my firm belief that heavy metal musicians are producing more variety of music, sounds, instrumentation and vocals than 99% of other mainstream musical genres. As long as you can embrace some degree of "hectic", then heavy metal includes so much diversity and experimentation that it can be explored indefinitely and appreciated for its constant variety. It certainly avoids notions of generic and conventional.
