YEES finally Eluveitie!! Such an awesome band from Switzerland. Check out "Ategnatos" and "King" both epic AF! Another beautiful song is "Call of the Mountains" with the old singer Anna Murphy.

@Sharksbreath I don't really think so. The band has a completely different history and other members left the band and new members came. However, I've been listening to their music for just about two months, so I am not an expert :-)

Chrigel Glanzmann (male vocalist) is the heart and soul of Eluveitie, he started it as basicly a produced project because his idea of mixing metal and folk kept being turned down, so he invited musicians separatedly to play a piece and mixed it all together, he never found a vocalist to his liking so did them himself as a last resort, after mixing he let them listen to his end product, that got traction in the metalscene and from that a band was formed. And what a band it is ❤️

Funny enough, you find bandmates off KZread :D The flute player and the hurdy-gurdy player are both Eluveitie fans picked up off KZread...where the latter played Eluveitie covers xD

That funky instrument she was playing with the crank on it is a Hurdy Gurdy. Invented over 1000 years ago.

So... Michalina, the hurdy gurdy player... Learned to play the instrument after getting into the band (her channel shows her transition from fan to member). She replaced long term gurdy/singer Anna Murphy.. Who herself learned the instrument after getting into an early incarnation of the band.

They are all amazing musicians. Live you can heard every instrument. I don't know how they do it but its amazing!

Epona is a great one... Its a Fabi lead vocal, but Chrigel's growls just blend in softly In the chorus like in the chorus here....

Fantastic band!! One of my all time favorites. Fell in love very first time I heard them!

That is a Hurdy Gurdy. This band is amazing live! I have seen them with an older line up with Anna Murphy on Hurdy Gurdy and Vocals, Ivo on guitar and Merlin on drums, all now in a band called Cellar Darling. I have also seen them with this current lineup. I got to meet the new Hurdy Gurdy player Michalina Malisz, she is super nice. I was supposed to see them again September 25 but COVID19 cancelled that. Hopefully they come around again soon. 😁

Ahhhh - Welcome to Eluveitie! I don't even know how to classify them - so don't try - Appreciate the Metal they offer, the Celtic undertones, and most of all, just the melange of instruments into a medley of beauty, harsh and clear conjoined to deliver bliss. Bonus - they are this good live too!

Check out some older stuff as well. "Call of the Mountains" and "Rose for Epona" are both good to start with. Glad to see y'all finally getting to them.

I don't remember what year it was but not long before Anna Murphy quit. I went to Sweden Rock festival specifically to see Eluveitie who played the last day. A few hours before they were supposed to play we get the announcement that they and another band are stuck at the airport in Denmark and won't make it. Turns out someone worked some magic, because they managed to get there just in time to play the very last show of the festival instead of the other band that was stuck. Well most of the band made it. They had to leave one member and like half of their instruments, including the bagpipes, behind. I think the show might have been better for it. Amazing contact between band and audience over shared annoyance and relief.

That instrument you asked about is called a Hurd-Gurdy. Irish folk metal baby :)

That weird box that played before the breakdown together with the flute is called a hurdy gurdy. The crank acts in a similar way to a bow on a violin. So by moving the crank you get a continous monotonous sound and by pressing down the buttons on the sides you change the pitch. In this case she moved the crank back and forth quickly wich gave it this tremolo effect.

Thank u for reacting into Eluveitie :) Hard to find rare instrument musicians.. Well in Europe we do have few.. Hurdy gurdy is just over 1000 years old instrument (very rare & expensive since it must be hand build for each person specially. you can hear that played even in one of the Metallica's song :)

Hell yeah! Finally Eluveitie react! Yes! You must next song "Epona", "Lvgvs" (same album) and "Rose for Epona", "Alesia", "Helvetios" (Helvetios album), "Quoth the Raven" (Everything remains (As It Never Was) album). They sing in old Gaelic. And also song "Call of the mountains" is amazing :)

You should see their former vocalist/ hurdy gurdy player Anna Murphy's band " Cellar Darling " and their video for Avalanche.

The instrument you didn't recognise is a Hurdy Gurdy. This is from Wikipedia: "The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin."

The framework for this European metal thing going on, and which has been going on for some years now, could in it´s entirety be called Operatic Symphonic Progressive Melodic Euro-Folk Metal,- and you´ve only just scratched the uppermost thin layer of top ice of what is in fact a full blown clacier. The folk metal part is a sub-genre as diverse as there are different folk regions of Europe,- at least sixteen to my knowledge,- and only one part of the entire patchwork of styles and genres. If you decide to go into this,- you´ll be going deep down the rabbit hole,- ie. for instance Operatic Viking Folk ala Therion or Symphonic Melodic ala Delain or Operatic Goth ala Blackbriar or Italian Melodic folk Metal ala Furor Gallica...and so on.. It´s legion. Enjoy.

The instrument where you go "what is that?" is a Herdy Gerdy... Not even kidding. :P

Dunno if I can agree with that (and it kinda hurts me to say so because Anna leaving the band was nearly as heartbreaking to me than the Nightwish-Tarja breakup). But to me , Ategnatos is the best album Eluveitie did till now, and I really love what Fabi has to add to the band vocally. Also, Alain, Michalina and Jonas are absolutely slaying it at their respective instruments, so the only thing I still miss is the uniqueness Anna added to her songs with her wonderful, enchanting voice. Luckily, I have Cellar Darling for that :)

Get lost w/ that "lost a lot of quality" bullshit.... man, comments like that really piss me off. Fabi was an UPGRADE and their last album is easily their best. Michalina is also a better Gurdy player than Anna... just get over it man, Anna is gone!
