Elton John - Skyline Pigeon (Ryan White funeral)

Музыка

Ryan White December 6, 1971 -- April 8, 1990
On April 11, 1990,1500+ people attended Ryan White's funeral, in a sad chapter in America's history. (I wrote about it here: tinyurl.com/24xlu4m)
Ryan~
In times of sheer darkness and despair, you shone brighter than the most brilliant star and displayed a bravery rarely matched.
Happy 39th birthday to the little boy with the bright smile. Happy birthday, skyline pigeon...
Turn me loose from your hands
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway
For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
And my eyes are mirrors
Of the world outside
Thinking of the way
That the wind can turn the tide
And these shadows turn
From purple into grey
For just a Skyline Pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Just let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new mown hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day
I want to hear the pealing bells
Of distant churches sing
But most of all please free me
From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun
For just a Skyline Pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
~Elton John & Bernie Taupin

It's amazing how Elton can perform in situations like this without breaking up. He did the same thing at Princess funeral. What a true strong professional. Elton is truly an outstanding individual.

Elton John is broken so badly by these deaths that all he can do is perform for the loved ones of these people who passed away. That's how he can keep his composure. He knows it's either being emotional or singing.

Can’t believe it’s been 28 years today. I was only 2 when he passed. All throughout my school years, I learned how brave he was, giving the dire circumstances. I am now a teacher in my hometown of Indy and each year, I take my students to his gravesite in Cicero as well at the Children’s Museum in Indy to educate how important he was in his short 18 years. You get two options: like or dislike. It doesn't specify what you like or dislike about the video. It could be the content. It could be the quality. It could be that the person doesn't like someone sharing content that they didn't create or own. It says nothing of the value of the person. It says nothing about what they thought of Ryan or Elton John.

3:37 This is the part that breaks me. 😭 There is something about that falsetto that always cuts the onions while watching this. This is the first time I have ever burst into tears listening to an Elton John song I mean Candle in the Wind is a sad song but for some odd reason it never made me cry but only feel sad. But this version of Skyline Pigeon combined with this being done for Ryan White and because my grandfather passed away last year just makes me lose it. Ryan White, Grandpa, and MJ...I hope to see you in heaven. ❤️ 😭 🌸

I think of Ryan White often. I thank him for his courage and bravery and that of his mother and sister. I lost my Dad in the Oklahoma City Bombing and while I can NEVER KNOW what they went through - I know the pain of loss. God Bless You All.

I remember hearing about Ryan being diagnosed with AIDS on the news. Him and I were the same age. Then many years later found out he passed away. This video brings tears to my eyes. The way people treated him was inhumane. Especially James O Smith. The man who refused to let Ryan go back to school. Shame on him and everyone else who treated him so horribly. He was just a kid. An innocent child.

I remember reading about Ryan's story in Scholastic Magazine back in the mid 80's when I was elementary school, and then seeing The Ryan White Story movie. So many jokes were made about him by people that did not even know him. Ryan was a warrior and inspiration to a lot of people in the long run, but some us put this kid in our hearts right off. I wish I would have had the courage straight off to defend myself against bullies, which I finally did by high school. It was so good to see a town accept Ryan into their school and for him get a little peace and happiness. I lived Nappanee, Indiana north of him so his story was in the South Bend Tribune a a lot. It was heartbreaking when he passed, but I'm glad that he ended up touching so many lives and spreading awareness about AIDS when it virtually unknown in the 80's. RIP Dude you did good.
